Coughing after jogging.

Quote  |  Reply

I just went outside. I live in Georgia, so it's not too cold, but it's not exactly warm. I did incredibly short jogging / walking intervals and went around the square of my subdivision once - which took 8 minutes. It's probably not even .25 miles.

I come inside, and I can't stop coughing.

Are my lungs just horrible?

What should I do?

Sounds like allergies. Try a cold pill that is over the counter if it persists. If you are new to running, you could be going through some adjustments and bodily cleansing. Unfortunately, I don't have enough info on you to know.

no i dont think its allergies.. this happens to me alot too and ive always wondered why! everytime i try and take a dee breath after jogging i have to cough a little... any other ideas other than allergies? im sorry i dont have any but i definitely know what you mean!
ilove2sail:  I hate to say it, but could it be asthma?  Turns out that was what my chronic running issues and coughing fits were.

adjuvant:  My first thought for you would also be the possibility of allergies, since it sounds like it hasn't been a long-term concern.
i've been having this problem recently too! it happens both in the gym and when i run outside. i cant breathe deeply or else it irritates the back of my throat and i cough. this wasn't a problem in the summer so i don't know if it's the weather or what. but it definitely sucks!
This happens to me when I've been running outside as it's been getting colder...never happened in the summer but it has been happening for my past few runs. My BF chalks it up to cold weather, and I've never had this problem before so I'm hoping that's the case - I've heard running in cold weather can be really harsh on your lungs, and I've signed up to run a 5k on Thanksgiving and crossing my fingers I make it past the finish line before I start coughing like crazy!
dieting diana- you'll totatlly make the 5K! i'm also doing one on thanksgiving, but we'll be walking most of it b/c it's too crowded to really attempt to run. i did a 10K today so i would'nt feel bad about not running the 10K. good luck!
I had the same thing and it turned out to be asthma. however it gets a lot better after a few weeks of constant exercise. i don't start coughing anymore unless i run for much longer than usual. you can go to your doctor and get a exercise induced asthma inhaler which you take right before you exercise and that dose wonders until your lungs get stronger.

I have asthma (exercise induced). I used to cough a lot when I would run. Usually, I'd throw up. I tend to get chronic bronchitis in the winter and my lungs react VERY BADLY to cold. When I would get sick, it was so bad, I'd get coughing fits so bad I'd actually develop other problems. I'd also get NASTY earaches after running in the cold.

However, it seems the past few years  It has been better. I haven't gotten a winter cold/cough/bronchitis in years. I'd say it's because I've "trained" my body/lungs to get used to activity (I started very slowly). If it's cold, I plug my ears with cotton. I also do something that the mexican side of my family passed down for generations: If I think I'm getting sick, or just for general health, I'll chop up and swallow a whole clove of garlic (it's tough on the digestive system).

I got bold the other night and forgot to take my inhaler before going running, I didn't bother to go home and take it, I figured I could do it. Ugh, I thought my breath tasted like lungs were bleeding (kind of metalic), I was surprised at how much I could do, but was only able to do half of my normal regimen. I don't think I would have been able to do it if it hadn't been for the steps I've taken.

Here's an interesting article on Exercise Induced Asthma (http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286--9992-0,00.h tml). When I first began running I would cough afterwards and get a coppery taste from it. I have been running more consistently and do not get the same effect now unless it's a harder run or very cold out. If it's to the point you are having extreme trouble breathing, check with your doc and maybe get an inhaler, usually my coughing fits would last about an hour after running. I wouldn't have trouble breathing, but it was rather annoying! For me though, it's gotten better with time.
If you take a deep breath in when you're having the coughing spell and huff it out, do you hear a light wheezing or whistling noise? Exercise, especially in cold air, is a common trigger for asthma, and mild asthma often shows up as coughing spells after activity. If it happens all the time, get a prescription for a puffer from your doctor. They're not very expensive and it should help.
I was having the same problem, my doctor told me it was asthma.  It has completely gone away with regular exercise and singular.

i went to my doctor and he gave me an inhalor.

a few puffs before a jog and one or two after and im all set.

Hi ! I had this happen last night too. . .I have been continuously exercising the past 4 months , and over time i've done really well with cardo and getting comfortable doing cardio not feeling like i'm going to pass out! I usually go to the gym during the day for about an hour to 2 hours , at least 4 times a week - the past few weeks i've been running a couple miles at night around the neighborhood, and was fine until last night when the run was good, but when i got home and got inside, i just started coughing , then it got worse and worse, to where i felt like i was going to throw up, it was so irritating so i sucked on a cough drop and drank tons of water, it finally went away about an hour later, even though my throat was very irritated. . .now today my throat is sore feeling strained. . .

Has anyone had this happen too all the sudden? ? I dont know if it is because of the weather, it was quite hot last night and kinda muggy, i'm in arizona and I hear allergies are bad right now . . I did kinda get a runny nose & itchy eyes, but nothing in comparison to how my throat was feeling!

Any feedback would be great! :)

thanx!

If it was just coughing, then it might be exercised induced asthma. However, runny nose, itchy eyes, are all classic allergy symptoms. You probably have an allergy to something in the atmosphere around where you are doing your runs. You may want to start doing your running at the gym on the treadmill and see if it improves.

By the way, one thing I saw in your post was that you spend up to two hours at the gym? That is a really long time. You can get an effective weight training session done in 40-60 minutes. Just out of curiousity, what exercises are you doing that has you at the gym for two hours a session? If you are using machines, or doing a lot of isolation exercises (flies, pushdowns, curls, etc), try switching to compound exercises (squat, deadlift, bench press, military press, barbel rows, pull-ups, and dips). They work multiple muscle groups so there is no need for isolation, and you finish much faster and get a much better workout.

Hey I'm in Arizona too and just had this happen to me for the first time (that I can remember).  There were a lot of school buses and cars going past me while I was jogging.  Might they have kicked up extra dust / dirt and aggravated my lungs?  I guess the test would be for me to do the same jog during the night when everything is settled.

Although it was hot outside, my lungs hurt as if I were sprinting in sub zero temperatures immediately after jogging today.

ya well this sucks!

heres my problem, im 35yrs old been working out for 12 yrs but this year i took off 6 weeks from the gym and didnt do any exercise at all, normally i run on treadmill 1-3 mile not much of a runner,, anyways when i finally went back to the gym i jumped on the treadmill NOT  even a mile and i was so outta breath , breathing so hard i was getting dizzy ,coughing felt like i was gonna faint i could not freakin breathe i also had that nasty taste of metallic or blood.. when i spit no blood, so an hour past and i was ok but still a little freaked so couple days later i tried again and before a mile i was outta breath again , went to see my doc he said i probably have asthma gave me an inhaler,, so the next day i got back on and ran again same **** hard breathing so i took a puff of inhaler and i was able to breathe but the albuteral had me dizzy and shaky didnt like it now 2 months later still having that funky taste of blood sometimes when i just cough with no exercise.. i have seen the urge care about a month ago cuz i actually did cough a lil blood not very much,, he said allergies or sinus he said the taste is blood from the nasal drip tube that drips in to the throat... but i wanna know how to stop all of this is it asthma, allergies? or is my body and lungs outta shape? ANY HELP OR SIMILAR SITUATIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED Undecided

Well I Googled this because I had to find out what it was. Of course I didn't find anything helpful, sorry.  I think though if you have coughed up blood and are still worried about it and your doctor isn't being helpful (which a lot of times they aren't...especially at urgent care places), then you should go and get checked out by a lung specialist, or whatever type of doctor specializes in asthma/lungs. Especially if you continue to cough up blood!

But anyway, I do cough almost every time I do intense cardio. I hadn't thought of asthma at all because I have no problems otherwise.  Of course now that I read this thread I'll be worried about it because I'm a hypochondriac...lol.  One day a couple weeks ago I really did have that whistling sound, but it was never that bad again.  I just assumed it was because I am horribly out of shape and suck a lot of wind. Lol.

well i have a DR. appt today so i keep everyone updated, i only coughed blood once and it was less then a teaspoon,,,  im really thinking that its coming from my sinus who knows ,, i guess ill find out todayLaughing
