Hmmmm veggies I have right now...

Broccoli, romaine lettuce, carrots, celery, onion, frozen green beans, frozen mixed veggies, frozen spinach.

I will eat none of that today as I am fasting today (health reasons) but tomorrow (and rest of the week) I plan to eat some variety of frozen veggies with tsp of olive oil and salt for lunch along with some other healthy choice.

The fresh stuff will probably get eaten in salads this week. I must buy some apples!

...  QUESTION FOR THE DAY ...

What veggies are in your house RIGHT NOW?  (And are you planning on eating any of them?)

MOLLY

I have lots of asparagus, broccoli, fresh peas, cucumber, romaine, spinach, carrots, green beans, a yellow pepper, shallots, radishes, and red cabbage.  I'll probably have asparagus with dinner and a salad with lettuce, spinach, yellow pepper, tomatoes, and pecans after I finish my afternoon walk.  A lot of the other stuff will get used in stir fry tomorrow.

My Goals....

1.) To loose at least 25 lbs within the 75 days
2.) Drink more water
3.) Work out 5-6 times a week (Cardio-45 minutes, Weight Training 3-4 days a week)
4.) Eat no more than 1600 calories a day
5.) Record on Calorie count every single day, even on weekends no exceptions
6.) dont justify cheating on my diet
7.) stay poitive =)

come on guys...only 74 more days to go we can do it =)

Count me in, my goals are:

  1. Go to jiu jitsu/judo classes 3-5 days a week (currently I'm at 1-3). This is my strength training so I need to just do it, especially since it doesn't cost me any more $.
  2. Keep up the dance classes and the dancing (currently just doing classes 2 days a week, I'm thinking of getting back into another class and 2 or 3 dance events).  This is my cardio, so a few extra hours in the week is good for me.
  3. Drink enough water.
  4. Track my calories
  5. Track my activities
  6. Aim for a 300 calorie deficit.

Carrots, shredded cabbage, sweet mini bell peppers, a huge jar of artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, green onion, cilantro, baby cucumbers.

I just ate shredded carrots, cabbage, green onion, and cilantro in my Thai noodle salad.  I'm planning on cutting up the bell peppers for snacks.  I'll be making some greek salads and then another pasta salad with the artichoke hearts and flax noodles.

I've got: summer squash, salad greens, peppers, yams, and broccoli.  We're having summer squash with tomatoes to go with our sword fish for dinner tonight.   There was a time that I would buy veggies and not eat them.  Though I still have to be deliberate about eating them, I'm making more of an attempt.

bintzp ... welcome aboard! Great Goals! (You can do this!)

afowler ... welcome aboard! Thanks for joining us, fabulous goals!

realitymommy... welcome aboard! Looking forward to getting healthier with you!

lisaokafor3288 ... welcome aboard! I love your idea about staying positive!

smwhipple ... welcome aboard! Keep us posted on the dancing and jiu jitsu!!!

(And it was nice to see that we all seem to have SOME veggies in our house!)

Now ... I just have to figure out which ones to eat, and for dinner!!! By the way, it's "cooled down" to 101 here .... so I am off to the pool!

MOLLY

Great idea, Molly. I need all the motivation I can get! Thanks for starting this new chance to help keep each other accountable.

I just started a new challenge for myself. (I'm just completing day 5) I'm seeing how many days I can go without falling off the wagon. I'm going to be a little more lenient with myself than I have in the past - I'm trying to get past the "all or nothing" mentality. So, for right now, staying on the wagon means:

1. Keeping a written log of my all calories each day, not exceptions

2. Not going over my calories for that day. (However, I'm allowing myself two days at "maintenance" calories each week (no more!) if I really need them. I know this approach will slow my progress down, but I'm really trying to make permanent changes.

I also plan to incorporate some exercise in each day, but I'm not adding that to the challenge until I have the eating under control. Maybe in a couple more weeks...

Good luck, everyone! Won't it be satisfying to report on August 1? (:

Ciao Mollymouser!

I hit a new low at 169 (from 198 in January), and I'm excited to get going on losing some more.  I did a lot of exercise today, moving out of a non-airconditioned building to a building with AC, and walking up and down three flights of stairs in one building across campus (yes, I'm a college student) and across to the BACK of the other building.

Vegetables:

1/2 Family Sized Bag of frozen chopped spinach
1 Family Sized Bag of frozen broccoli florets.
3 medium yellow potatoes.

I only have 1/2 a bag of spinach because I had a spinach binge!  I figure that's okay, because I got my fiber up by eating only 150 calories worth of Spinach.  I'm in a good mood!

Welcome anyone I haven't welcomed yet!

Hey, it's sure nice to see so many veggie-laden, focused and motivated fellow Summer-y Healthy Eaters!!!  And wow, so many of you are really focusing on healthy dark green veggies .... anti-oxidants for days!!!

At lunch today I had four servings of broccoli (that's a LOT of broccoli, mind you), plus one serving of grape tomatoes ... so that put me at five servings. Dinner includes four servings of fresh green beans, three servings of spring mix (lettuce),  and a medium red pepper... (is that one serving or two?) Anyway, along with the cucumber that I will have later for snack, that gives me at least 14 servings of veggies for the day!

I picked up asparagus, artichoke, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, orange and red peppers, corn on the cob, radishes and portabella mushrooms while out shopping today ....  so I have a nice collection of fresh veggies in the house.

Now I need to come up with a plan for those portabellas!

... QUESTION FOR THE DAY ...

What veggies are in your house RIGHT NOW? (And are you planning on eating any of them?)

MOLLY

I'm just gonna jump in here... I love all the support that y'all are giving each other!

I have a lot of veggies in the house right now, but no, I probably will not eat them all before they go bad. I have a box of fresh baby green salad, a pound of sugar snap peas, a bunch of asparagus, onions, and frozen carrots (a sad attempt to save a whole bag that weren't going to be eaten while we were on vacation... I'm thinking I can puree them and add them to a pasta sauce?)

So one of my goals is to eat those veggies before they go bad. That's about two servings of veggies a day. Today I finished some broccoli, and red peppers.

PORTOBELLOS! I love them! I never buy them because my spouse hates them, and you can't usually buy one. Anyway, I love marinating them in a light teriyaki, and grilling them on the bbq. I'm sure you could do the same on a high heat skillet.

Thanks for the hearty welcome Molly! <3

I really love this idea. I acutally started something like this today but heres my goals.

1) walk everyday

2) cut out all butter

3) cut out all sodas

4) hopefully get more goals soon

The whole point of my kick off is really to just get healthier and change my life style.

Veggies i have in my house..celery....Im going with my mother soon to get more veggies and what not soon this week.

Yes, something to keep me on track during the summer months!

Minigoals:

1) Drink a lot more water than I have been drinking.  Drink them before meals.  Especially since it's hot outside, I've been dehydrated lately. :[

2) Exercise every single day in some way shape or form for an hour.  No excuses, because I really have none.

3)  Count calories.

4) Eat cleaner.

5) Cut out fried foods and sweets.

6) Stay within my calorie limit.

I bought celery at the store today, now I just need to come up with a nifty thing to do with it that doesn't involve dipping it in cottage cheese... mainly because I've sort of maxed out my tolerance for any more cottage cheese at the moment!

There are definitely some common themes in many of the goals that y'all have shared .... WATER .... EXERCISE .... VEGGIES .... COUNTING CALORIES. I guess a lot of dieting / healthy eating really comes down to just those few things, huh?

I watched The Bachelorette on tv Monday night, particularly as she went down the rows of very hunky men, selecting the ones that get to come back another week.  It was suddenly reminiscent of my walking through the produce department, selecting the veggies that would get to come home with me. The real trick, though, is getting them all eaten before they go fuzzy, limp, past-dated, or otherwise unvegetated. (My veggies, not the hunky bachelors, LOL!) I wonder if I burn more calories when I watch shows like that and my heart rate increases?

* Goes to check activity log to see if there is a listing for "watch hunky men on reality tv show" *

NEW QUESTION DU JOUR . . .

What's one tip/suggestion you have for encouraging yourself to DRINK MORE WATER? (What works for you? What are you going to try?)

Laughing

funny molly, i was wondering if i burned any calories watching horror movies... but i hate horror movies, so i don't think the trade-off is worth it! i can't sleep right now...

anyway, i have been drinking a lot more water since i cut out diet soda. i cut it out completely for a while (a couple months), and now i have it as a treat. but it's starting to creep in again... i'll have to cut my usage down before summer hits. anyway, when i'm not drinking any soda i drink my recommended daily amount of water without any problems. it's just a natural switch. and i never used to like the taste of water, but now i love it.

i swear diet soda is the devil.

About celery:

How about celery in plain yogurt with an apple and a little honey?

On the other hand the celery doesn't seem that necessary either...hmmm

About water: The only time I have problems having my water needs is when I forget my water bottle at home. Once you get used to having 3 liters a day you get thirsty every half hour...(on the down side I probably need to empty my bladder every hour as well(.

NEW QUESTION DU JOUR . . .

What's one tip/suggestion you have for encouraging yourself to DRINK MORE WATER? (What works for you? What are you going to try?)

I stay on track with my water by using a special "water glass". My daughter won a large glass which holds 24 oz so my goal each day is to fill the glass at least twice - ie breakfast, dinner.  Since I'm not home most days for lunch I try to have 1-2 bottles of water at work.

Molly, Thanks for the post. I'm really needing this right now.  I've really dropped off over the last 2 weeks - not counting, not exercising. This is the time of year I usually end up throwing in the towel and quitting - ie end of school year with lots of kids' school functions to deal with and meetings. So I'm hoping this will help keep me on track through the summer.

My summer goals:

  1. log food
  2. 4-5 serving vegetables per day
  3. 1-2 serving fruit per day
  4. drink water - goal 64 oz per day
  5. exercise  - average 30 minutes per day
  6. try at least 1 new recipe each week
  7. cook dinner more - eat out less!
