QUESTION OF THE DAY ... MONDAY JUN 23
What is the WORST (stupid, annoying, unhelpful) DIET ADVICE you've ever heard?
MOLLY
All of those stupid diets out on the market! Some of the girls at work were talking to me one day about the weight I've lost, and one girl started talking about the "Grapefruit Juice" diet she did a while back. "Lost 15 pounds, isn't that great? It really works!" Uh huh. Yeah right.
Substitute whatever fad is currently the rage in place of "Grapefruit Juice Diet" and it applies. When are people gonna realize those diets are only short term solutions? For real, lasting weight loss and maintenance, we gotta eat right and exercise. I just don't think there's any other answer.
Sheesh.

"Just don't eat ____ and you'll loose weight." I've heard several different things for the blank part. Don't eat "carbs", don't eat "wheat", don't eat "dairy", etc.
I realize it's possible to have a sensitivity to some things and that should be taken into consideration when planning your own diet. But that's not the same as the "one size fits all" diet thinking that we usually hear these days. Honestly, I think the real reason some of these so called "diets" work, it's just because they cut calories for that person when that person stops eating those things. Usually the person will tell you how much they love the thing they aren't eating. So I figure that's why the diet works for them. They are just eating less calories because they are no longer eating that thing.
The problem with this kind of thinking is that it's too easy to fall off the wagon. The person either ends up over compensating by eating more of other foods (still more calories) or they end up missing the one forbidden thing so badly that they just give up and go back to eating what ever they want. This kind of thinking never changes the lifestyle problem of overeating and not getting enough exercise.
Now I try to avoid processed sugar and processed flour products. It's not because I don't think I can ever have them again. It's because I'm counting calories and I don't want to spend my calories on food that isn't as healthy for me and ultimately just leaves me feeling hungry. But I don't forbid myself to have these things. But when I do, I count the calories and then try to cut back somewhere else to compensate for the high calories just spent.
Most of the time, it just isn't worth it to me to eat high calorie foods because I get hungry too easy. The point is I don't "fail" just because I decide to eat some carrot cake on my son's birthday. But I do end up being more hungry because if I eat the cake, I also have to eat less food the rest of the day. (This is what happened to me yesterday but it was worth it.)
I believe the only way to successfully loose weight and keep it off is to completely change our thinking as well as our habits about food and exercise and then we also need to be accountable about that change. For me, counting calories is part of my accountability. So is being open with others about what I am doing.

"do not eat bananas", "do not drink beer", "do not eat" (as in do not eat at all).
also "try this magic pill"
Great news! A week of eating junk food and wedding food in texas and I only gained 1 pound! It probably helped that I didn't eat much red meat because I'm not used to it. I'm still surprised though that I only gained 1 after all those margaritas and whataburgers I tried!

Oh Whataburger! They are good aren't they? Well, remember their slogan, "Have it your way!" So you can order it without the bun oil which saves a ton of calories. Or better yet, order a Whataburger Jr. on a wheat bun and no bun oil. Then you get a Whataburer with only 350 calories. ![]()
I love the Whataburger website for determining calories because it lets you build your own meal.
Check it out here.

Minor victory here! After one month, I've lost 5 pounds. More importantly, I've lost 2 inches in the waist and 2.5 inches in the hips! My "fat jeans" are falling off - time to switch to some smaller ones!![]()
YAY! Great victories and successes, peeps! Keep 'em up! ![]()
Just a reminder, I'm going to be on a 3-day mini vacation Tues-Wed-Thurs, so our very own smwhipple will be posting the QODs for those three days!
Drink your water!
Eat your veggies!
Keep up the good work!
MOLLY
axejudge - CONGRATULATIONS! That's awesome news! I can't wait until I get to go shopping for smaller jeans. I'm not quite there yet. Although I'm hopeful another 5 lbs will do it for me. That's a lot of inches lost. How did you do it?
Molly- Have a GREAT trip! We will miss you while you are gone.

Staples of a healthy diet: brown rice/flax noodles, broccoli, green beans, roasted chicken.
Worst dieting advice: Just watch your portions dear! The portion size isn't the problem, it's how many calories are in a portion of whatever you're eating. Second worst advice: cabbage soup diet...it would be first except that it's so obviously a fad diet.
I do have a DVD on learning Portuguese, so as soon as I go through that then I can start planning a trip. I have a bunch of guys in my BJJ class who are fluent in Portuguese so it shouldn't take much more than an attempt or two at a phrase to get them to help me.
Worst dieting advice: I don't remember now what it was called (obviously it didn't really impress me) but I saw this commercial the other day for some diet pill claiming to help you quickly lose weight & inches without dieting or exercise. The catch phrase "If it wasn't true we couldn't say it on tv." I saw the product at the store the other day and sure enough on the packaging "We couldn't print it if it wasn't true." Who do they think they are fooling?

What is the WORST (stupid, annoying, unhelpful) DIET ADVICE you've ever heard?
MOLLY
I would have to say the cottage cheese diet. Eat nothing but cottage cheese all day long. Although I love cottage cheese I could never live off of it for all my meals. I like variety & that's what keeps me on my diet in the first place, allowing myself to eat things I like in moderation.
I had an early weigh in day (today) and I lost another pound! FINALLY got below 230!
For me the worst diet advice was the low/no carb thing. For me, it was an unmitigated disaster. Not because I didn't lose weight, I did~! A bunch. But it is not a diet I can stick with, I promptly gained back what I lost plus about 30+ extra for good measure.
The worst part about that was that I let the world convince me that the ONLY way to lose weight was to stop eating so many carbs, and since I couldn't do that, it was hopeless.
I spent probably close to two years in that mindset getting more and more unhealthy until I found CC. I know that if I hadn't found CC i would never have found the success I have. The best part is, I feel in control of food for the first time in my life for any extended period!
I have much love for this place. Cheers everyone. Keep up the fabulous work!
Hi All!
I've been MIA from posting for some time, I have been lurking but just not been keeping up with the QOD or my goal progress. But I am happy to say that eventhough I had a food orgy weekend with one party after another I managed to stay calorie neutral and not put on any lbs.
The better news is that I have been slowly losing some lbs, namely 4 lbs over the past 4 weeks. I am so happy about those few little 4 lbs that I cannot contain myself. I realize that since I have fewer lbs to lose now it's just going to have to come off around a lb a week and I have to be ok with that. The flip side is that 4 lbs makes a difference in my clothes such as no harsh red waist line markings after a day of wearing my jeans.
AS for my goals, I'm doing pretty good on all except for the coffee. I love coffee!!! It is so hard for me to give up but I know I should. Right now I'm going to choose decaf. Ugh! Good luck everyone and keep up the great work!
Oh, and Melly, I'm so with you on the carb thing. I would never be able to face a life without carbs and when I did try going Atkins I ended up feeling very sick and weak. I am a firm believer, like many here, that eliminating any particular food type is setting us up for failure.
Congrats Melly on your progress, rock on axejudge and laurienkids! Y'all inspire me to keep going!

QUESTION OF THE DAY....TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2008:
What are your goals (if any) for physical activity each day/week/month?
Diet/fads- the starvation diet. Needless to say that didn't work for me
Physical goals- boot camp. I took it once and I couldn't move for two days. I know it will get easier though, but I needed to kick it up a notch with working out. I also want to take two yoga classes a week, in addition to one strength class, two kickboxing classes, and two regular cardio sessions (hiking, treadmill, walking, elliptical). I work out a lot, but it really helps with my mood.
!!!! The milk and apples diet! !!!!

My goal is to at least do some sort of exercise daily, but I like to get 3-4 days of a really good sweaty workout. ![]()

QUESTION OF THE DAY....TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2008:
What are your goals (if any) for physical activity each day/week/month?
My goals for this summer are:
6:15 am - 6 days a week - morning walk - I walk as fast as I can carrying small hand weights. As I walk, I try to work out with the weights for part of the walk. I've also just started walking backwards for a few hundred feet of the trip. My route is almost 3 miles. It takes me 55 minutes to walk.
10:30 am - 3 to 4 days a week - water aerobics. I do at least an hour but sometimes up to an hour and a half.
8:00 pm - about 5 days a week - repeat the morning walk routine.
If I miss one of the above because of schedule or weather, I try to replace it with a pilates workout to a DVD.
So far I'm doing great an loosing weight and getting stronger. After the summer is over, I will have to adjust my routine a little. Not sure exactly what that will be yet. I'm sure I will keep up the walking. But I'm not sure what will replace the water aerobics.
~ Beth
My physical goals are to get 3-5 martial arts workouts in each week and 3-5 dance sessions each week. Between the two of those, my cardio and strength training should be nicely taken care of and then anything else is just pure fun.
