A couple of questions about: FLAX SEEDS

Quote  |  Reply
So I was going to pick some up but they're pretty expensive...and from the look of them, they almost look like a waste of calories to me, so I wanted to ask a couple questions!

1.  Do they actually change/add flavor to what you put them in?

2.  Do you think adding them to foods changes the satisfaction you get from that food?  Say you add it to yogurt..do you think you would have felt just as satisfied eating the same amount of yogurt without the flax?

3.  Why do you add it to your foods?

Thanks so much =)

1... I don't think they taste of anything.  Unlike sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds, for example.

2. ... I don't think they are particularly filling unless you use the ground version which would act as a thickener

3.... I add them mostly to home-made bread and muesli bars to give them some extra texture and fibre.

I know a lot of my family eats them for their nutritional content, not necessarily for the taste.

Just wondering... do you know how long they are good for?

they keep a long time, provided that they're in an opaque container in the fridge.  they're very heat and light-sensitive.

whole flax seeds tend to go right through you.  to get the benefits, you need to either grind them yourself or buy ground.  i get ground flaxseed in the bulk section of the grocery store.  they seem to go through it pretty quickly, so it's reasonably fresh.

i put a tablespoon on my cereal.  i love the stuff: the taste and the texture.

Hi. I buy the ground flax seed and put it into my yougart in the morning. I think it adds a nutty flavor and once I got use to the taste and texture, I found I really like them.

I buy mine at the health food store and keep the bag in the fridge.

Flax seeds don't have a particularly pleasant taste, but they are good for their good fats (omega 3 and 6) which are said to make a beautiful and glowing skin.

They have to be fresh, so don't keep them too long and consumed ground, 1 tbs per day. I grind mine at the coffee's grinder and add them to my porridge or eat them with a little yogurt to cover their taste.

I buy the whole seeds in the bulk food section at the grocery store and they are quite inexpensive.  I have a coffee grinder and grind enough for three or four days at a time.  They fluff up to at least twice their original size.  I have been keeping the whole seeds in the cupboard but once I grind them I keep that in the refrigerator.

Besides putting it in my hot cereal, I also put it in my bean soup.  For a snack I like round corn chips with a little hummus and flaxseed.   It adds a little flavor.

I eat them because the omega 3 is supposed to offset bad fats and improve cholesterol.  I figure it can’t hurt – in moderation of course.  Since I’m female, I think the estrogen is good for me.

Ok so I was at the store and I picked up 2 bags of Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed meal (whole ground flaxseeds).  It was on sale for $2 per bag =D

I added 1 tbsp to my bowl of peanut butter and banana oatmeal and OH MY GOODNESS I am in love!  It made it so thick and delicious..really similar to pudding!

I'm excited and so glad I tried them!  Thanks for your replies everyone! =)

Here is a Brownie recipe made with flaxseed meal and is deeelicious!Smile

I actually love the flavor/texture of flax seeds!  I think it does make food more "filling" (I have a pb that has them mixed in and it satisfies me soo much more!).

I add them to foods for the omega fatty acids and mostly because it's really good for your hair, skin, and nails.
