Craigs List or Ebay
I've never used either. I have some stuff to sell and I'd like to hear some of your experiences.
i haven't sold anything on either; i've given away stuff on craigslist. the advantage of cl is that it's local, so - no shipping. also, none of this bidding business; people just contact you directly and you can negotiate.
the disadvantage is that there are lots of douchebags.

Yep. This is why I go with ebay. There are more rules, but I like the anonymity, and if you get gyped by either a buyer or seller, I think that ebay does a better job of helping to get it settled.
Yeah, if you get screwed over using Craigslist you're on your own.
Craigslist is good for big stuff like furniture, ebay's probably better for small things that are easy to ship.
Everyone on craigslist will try to get you to lower your price. Even if they agree on a price, once you meet up they'll be like HEY WILL YOU TAKE THIS MUCH??
As pg said, lots of douchebaggery going on.
Several of the items I have are pretty big, so I'll try Craigslist for them. I'm thinking about ebay for the old glass ware because I can probably get a better price for it on there even if I have to do the auction thing.
Anybody want an old wringer washer?

like the one my grandma had, that i crushed my arm in when i was 6? no thanks!
Craigslist pros: Local, can be picked up (no shipping bother); you can insist on cash so no fraud problems
Craigslist cons: limited buyers; MANY times people "commit" to buy through email/phone contacts, then never show up to pay or pick up the item, so you have to re-list; in the more popular categories, you will need to re-list every couple of days because items get pushed back to off the first page quickly and a lot of "window shoppers" bother to go more than a page or two deep (unless you have something very specific or unique that people will actually bother using the the search engine for)
Note I haven't sold on Craigslist, just given away, but I have bought no problems.
Ebay pros: HUGE # of potential buyers; you can insist on Paypal, which helps protect from fraud; you can make a 3 day, 5 day, 7 day, 30 day listing, etc
Ebay cons: it's not free - it costs you to list the item (non-refundable if it doesn't sell - the best that can happen is you can re-list for no additional fee in most cases). Then if it sells, you have to pay Ebay a commission called a Final Value Fee- here's a link to the fee schedules: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html#ins ertion . Note that the insertion fees are actually a bit higher than how it states on that list because that is for a very basic listing. Adding pictures, pretty fonts, etc costs extra. I usually add a dollar or so worth of extras to my listings.
I have both bought and sold on Ebay with no problems at all.
Also note that both are anonymous thru email at first, but Craiglist you do eventually have to give out your address and phone #, so it all depends on your trust factor if you want strangers coming to your house...I personally never let anyone come when I'm home alone - I always make arrangements for when my husband will be home, but still, the fact is, now they know where you live...so if you get a real creepo, or if you sell them something that breaks later on and they get pissed, you may have issues...
I'd just meet people somewhere else to do Craigslist deals. Unless it's like a big piece of furniture. Then... drag it out on the sidewalk and down the street a couple houses haha. Then they don't know which house is yours!

Yep, that's the kind I have. It's from the 40's, is electric and the motor runs.

Yea, I HATE that people do that. It never fails! (I even type in my description that the price is not negotiable and they do it anyway! STAND FIRM!)
Haha. But, I definately agree....ebay for small shipable items, craigslist for big stuff. Though I hate how greedy ebay is with their dang fees. It keeps increasing. I've been selling on there for 8 years. They suck, but, I like getting something over nothing.
I use both. Craig's list hasn't been as successful for me as ebay has....but then I sell a lot of collectibles, and more collectors browse ebay..
Charleet, I have some lovely pieces of glass. I have a complete cocktail set from the 60's and I definitely think I'd get more for it from ebay. Please give me some tips on the best way to present it. I took several digital photos yesterday so that's not a problem.
E-BAY ROCKS MY LIFE!!! I buy all of my clothes, essentials on E-BAY and I save SO MUCH MONEY doing this!!!!! Selling things on E-Bay is relatively easy to do as well... it costs about $.70 to post an item with one photo... which is pratically nothing if you price your items anything higher than that! You just have to also figure out what the shipping cost of the items would be because on an E-Bay post you have to mention how much that will be too.... If you are selling items, E-Bay is definitely the way to go because it's easy to search on their site... Craigslist is a completely different story. I refer to craigslist when I need to find a new apartment or a job... not really items for sale - stick with E-BAY!
My brother-in-law sold some things on ebay and everything went fine..as for buying all i can say is....awesome XD I have bought dvd's, pens, clothes, jewlery..and everything worked out fine. Just review who you are buying from and be confident that you'll get the qulity you are wanting and all well be good. ![]()
