Will cranberry juice cure a bladder infection?
Asked by anonymous on Jan 31, 2009 in Health Conditions

I’m only 15 and I just found out I have a bladder infection. I don't want to go to the doctor because I hate peeing in a cup.  What should I do?

Answer

Cranberry juice can prevent bladder infections, but it does not treat an existing infection.  Visit your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment.  Solid research shows that cranberry juice decreases the number of symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs) over a 12 month period in women.  More research is needed to determine the optimum daily dose and the best method of administration (e.g. juice or tablets).  Cranberry juice stops infectious by keeping bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls.  Read more about cranberry and UTIs from the Guide to Nutrition at About.com.
