I crave burnt foods?

Quote  |  Reply

I was going to put this in the Food forum but the description made me lean towards here a little more.

As long as I can remember Ive always preferred my food over-done. I dont have a problem with it persay, as in it doesnt cause me any troubles or hold me back but Im curious if anyone else does as well?

Like burnt toast, way overdone hot dogs and chicken, or any meat really. Overcooked veggies and oatmeal, etc.
Does it mean anything at all or am I just really odd

I get that frequently too, but I have much, much MUCH weirder cravings than burned food. Typically when I crave burned food, I also crave other things like matchsticks as well, though I don't know why.

Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone.

Ive never really ventured into any sort of pica-like eating cravings/behavoirs but overdone food just seems SO appealing.

Im glad Im not the only one though :) Ive asked friends about it before and no one seemed to share my oddity, haha.

Hmm, well I don't crave burnt foods, but I thought I'd share that I am the total opposite. I love undercooked things - especially doughy things that haven't been fully cooked in the oven yet. (Though I don't eat undercooked meat - that is a recipe for infection!) I think I like the comfort that soft yet mildly warm things provide. Maybe you just like the crunchy texture and chalky taste of burnt things?

vida- yeah I think that just might be it. I like the crunchy and toughness of it. Like beef jerky or something haha ew that sounds so gross.

Although I am with you on undercooked when it comes to pancakes! I dont know why but I really like them crispy on the outsides but more doughy and gooey on the inside (even though Im not supposed to eat them).
Same with eggs.

I'm the exact same way. I don't really eat meat much, but when my dad grills kilbasi sausage on the grill... i'll only take it black. I also like my toast burnt as well. I thought I was the only one, but we're not alone... or maybe we're both odd... who knows?

Burnt food, as opposed to well-done food, is believed to have carcinogenic (cancer-causing) properties.  Burnt fat has the properties of transfats.  I'd try to wean yourself off this particular fondness if I were you....

slb - glad to know I am not alone. I dont eat much meat now as I used to (mostly just chicken and tuna now. Hard to stomach most other things) but I would always have it blackened.

sim - thank you for the links. I have only checked out the first one thus far and thankfully I rarely eat meat, let alone burnt meat (Ive been working on it for awhile), anymore so hopefully it has not negatively affected me.

jane - I suppose its on the inbetween. Not exactly completely burnt but more than well-done.
I have significantly lowered my consumption of it over the past three years though but I still find myself craving things very over-done.
My fat intake is pretty low because I had an organ removed and my body doesnt like digesting it so I dont eat any burnt fat.
Thank you for the info though, I did not know that (hence the curiosity in posting this topic!)

Hm.

I like burnt popcorn, and sometimes I leave it in the microwave for 10-15 extra seconds just to burn it.

And I CHAR my marshmallows.

But that's about it for me...

over cooking foods, even when it comes to veggies, makes it lose a lot of nutritional value that your body would thank you for.  My nutritionist advices me to always try and not cook my veggies so much, so it must be for a reason. I also liked burnt food before..but now I really try and have it as well-done without overdoing it.

Id say that for veggies and such, try not let it cook too much, unless you're not worried about lack of nutrition (I mean thats what veggies are for)

take care

EDIT:

this is a link I found on the whole cooking veggies too much..and how its much better to have them almost raw sometimes.

Burnt potato chips are my favorite, and after my wife cooks bacon, I'll pop mine in the microwave for an extra minute!

Admittedly, I prefer my toast slightly over-browned but not so far as burnt. Rare steak all the way though!

I like certain things very well done, but not burnt, like toast, bacon, hot dogs, sausages, popcorn and I always dig for the almost burnt pretzels in a bag.  I also like my hot foods (temperature, not taste) really, really hot, like pizza, soup and coffee.

Oddly, I like certain things underdone or doughy too, like eggs, many baked goods, etc.

I think it's just a taste and texture thing.  I can't fathom eating flimsy toast or bacon!  YUCK!!

Just to let you guys know, I read somewhere on nutritional deficiencies that if people crave burnt food, it means your body wants more carbon, which you can also get from eating fresh fruit. So if you eat more of that you may not crave the burnt stuff as much. Just a thought =)

oh wow, thats very interesting..I had no idea! Id definitely give that a try.

Well, I like overcooked meat and eggs - I always did...
But not other types of food - for example: overcooked vegetables are disgusting (I like them almost raw), or potatoes that got burned in the oven....yuck  And my toast usually isn't brown at allSmile

Having cravings for strange non-foods like chalk, burned things and matches etc may be a sign of iron deficiency. I love burned food too but even more than that ice is my thing.

http://mayoclinic.com/health/chewing-ice/AN01 278

I went through a phase of literally designing my day around when I could get cups of ice and I knew all the places that had "good ice".

I went to the doctor and had my iron checked at the urging of my boss (a physician). I was EXTREMELY iron-deficient and also becoming dangerously anemic (having palpitations and I was absolutely exhausted). But once I knew about it, it was nothing short of a few iron pills to fix it and I feel so much better and my cravings are under control.

So, why not just get your blood checked next time you are at the doctor. Cannot hurt only help.

But I agree with a few folks above, the burned stuff, though I love it too, just isn't good for your colon!
