Why do I crave sweets at night?
Asked by jessblondie on Aug 27, 2009 in Weight Loss

I usually eat around 1000-1200 calories a day.  I am 5'2” and 115 lbs (about 8st. 3lbs).  I skip breakfast most mornings -  I know it's bad but I don't like eating it. I have fish or a sandwich for lunch and a salad for dinner.  In total, it’s around 700 calories.  But then at night, I suddenly have cravings for sweets, chocolate and carbs.  It's very annoying because I try and have something healthy and I’m still hungry so I just eat junk food, which takes me up too around 1000-1200 calories. Will I still lose weight? why am I doing this? For about a month, I have been a vegetarian and I don't know if it's because i am cutting out all meats.

Answer

You crave sweets at the end of the day because you don’t eat enough food.  Praise the wisdom of the body!  Your central nervous system, which regulates all of your bodily functions, runs on glucose, and by the end of the day, it simply needs more fuel. You should not be dieting because you don’t have any weight to lose.  On the back end, I see that you are 14 years old and so you need 1800 calories a day at your height.  For you, a balanced diet contains 3 cups of milk, 1½ cups of  fruit, 2½ cups of   vegetables,  6 ounces of grain, 5 ounces of fish or beans/lentils/hummus, etc., 3 tsp. of oil, and 130 calories to spend as you wish.  Eat that much food in three meals a day, and your nighttime cravings will end.
