craving sweets even when using sweetener

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I've never started a topic before here but I can't seem to find an explanation to my problem anywhere. So, I stopped eating sugar altogether 2 months ago, I check all the labels and don't have pasta or carbs (I'm low-carbing). I didn't have any sweets for probably the first month but then I learned how to make sweets with sweetener instead (none of it is with dextrose, maltrose or whatever -ose there is that is derived from sigar) and now I find myself craving sweets everyday. I can do without them, but I usually have something as a dessert after dinner everyday. In the last week I went crazy cooking and baking 3-4 different types of sweets per day! That is waaaay too much sweetener and I will cut down on it, just want to have a bit in my morning coffee. But my questions is - why do I still crave sweets if I haven't had sugar in 2 months now? I remember reading that a habit is formed over 21 days. So quitting sugar and getting rid of sugar cravings should've been finished by now (60 days). Any ideas?

when you are eating the sweetener, your body expects carbs to follow. Since they don't, your body craves them

do a web search on sweeteners and cravings. They actually make you gain weight because of what you end up craving.

Limited natural sweeteners is better than all fake sweeteners.

Plus aspartame gives me migraines and see helloelloellos recent thread about them. Not good for you.

thanks for the reply crazydiamondchrysalis! it's so obvious i should google artificial sweeteners and cravings that I didn't see it :) I know they are bad for you, no doubt, to me it's a compromise for the short run (I figured one more month) but if I'm getting the same cravings from them as from sugar, that's dangerous! cause one day i'll stop low carbing and if I still crave sugar AND have it, I'll end up where I was 2 months ago. oh well, black coffee it is then, cheers!

maybe ur body is craving carbs? u need them for energy! if u focus on getting enuf protein ur carbs will not dominate ur diet. just a thot.

I had this same problem when I first started my road to getting fit. I've found that a sliver of real key lime pie or chocolate cake satisfies me more than a whole cake or pie of the fake stuff. Everything in moderation and if I go over my calorie limit, I try to exercise more that day. I do use splenda in my coffee in the morning and sometimes on cinnamon toast but if I want dessert I share one serving with a few of my kids. When I tried baking with splenda I would eat it and still be craving more..........
