I recently got back from a cruise, I expected to gain some weight however is it possible to gain 7 pounds in a week? How accurate is this weight gain?

Thanks!

sad to say it's pretty accurate some of it it water though. I gained 8.6 after my cruise in May. My biggest and best advice is to jump back into your old routine. The first few lbs is usually water weight. I dropped  3 lbs the day after being home and eating like I did before the vacation.

sorry double post

Yep, it's possible to be up 7lbs after being on a cruise for one week.  I was up 7lbs right after my cruise in April... some of it was water weight of course, but I still have a couple stubborn lbs that don't seem to want to leave me.  Those darn cruises are a constant all you can eat fest... food everywhere, all the time.  I even went to the gym a few days, but I guess I just overindulged too much.  Lesson learned.

Yes! It is poosible to gain that much weight on a cruise where the food is in endless supply. I gained 5 lbs in one week, and my partner gained at least as much on our first cruise.

We found that if we skip the buffets and go to  the sit down resturaunts that we ate just as well, but were satisifed with much, much less.  And we could pre-oder special foods here, too. They were very aware of diebetic and low-salt needs, so we felt much better on our second cruise.

Oh no - as much as I cannot wait for my cruise in May 2010 - I am dreading the weight gain... I can never resist a decent buffet! I went on one a couple of years back but I was heavier back then so cannot really remember the weight gain. I know that 3500 cals represents 1 pound of fat. So a 7lb gain over 7 days means an over eat of 24,500 cals on top of what your body actually requires. Cripes! I agree with the water weight - so much of the food on the chip is saturated in salt and this will make you retain so much!

Out of interest, did you enjoy yourself? That's what trips are all about!

freudian slip? Innocent

Haha - I have chips on the brain!!!

When I've gone on cruises, I've managed to keep the worst of the weight gain at bay by doing a few things.  Before dinner, I'd always work out--since you're supposed to dress nicely for dinner anyway, I'd be all showered and fresh when it was time to eat.  After dinner, we'd all walk around the deck a few times.  On the ships I've been on, a circuit was something like 1/4 or 1/3 mile, so we'd usually end up walking 1.5-2 miles after dinner.  And then for side trips, we'd do really active things, like kayaking or horseback riding or walking tours of the port city.

Another suggestion is to keep an eye on breakfast--it's really easy to use up an entire day's calories on French toast and bacon!  I'd just get an egg white omelet or some cereal most days, and only have a fancy full breakfast once on the trip.

I think as long as you keep active, it's totally ok if you eat more than you would otherwise.  And anyway, it's so much more fun to explore beautiful and exotic new places than to sit on some generic beach with a book and a too-sweet rum cocktail.

I went to the gym 3 of the 5 days but I also ate whatever my heart desired. I realized 'Its a vacaction.' There is more to life than constantly worrying about weight. I had a great time!Cool
