too many crunches = thicker waist?
Last night I did two set of crunches because I ate a big dinner the nite b4, and my bf told me not to work my belly too much because the fat could be gone but the inches will stay there because of added muscle. Is this true? I don't want to have a muscular waist like She-ra!

Maybe for guys it will bulk up but not for women. Britteny Spears does hundreds of crunches every day and I don't think she has a thick waist. Men have more testosterone which allows them to bulk up. That is not going to happen to a women unless she is taking steroids or training all day every day. Our bodys just don't work like that.
Crunches won't do much to "burn fat" so if you are trying to work off a big dinner you'd be better off walking around the block/ jogging or some other cardio activity. Also 2 sets how many were in a set? for how long did you work the abs? 10 minutes a day isn't going to bulk you up. Also did you work the obliques (sides).
You would have to lift some serious poundage to put any real muscle on your abs. dbf is right, tho, it'd be better to jog or walk to burn off calories. Do something that makes you sweat, anyways.
Crunches are supposed to make your midsection leaner, adding weights to it is the only way to make them grow.
If you ate a big meal, you are not going to just go out and work off the calories. Your body doesn't work like that. The only thing you are doing is helping yourself to feel less guilty.

I usually do 30 crunches in a set. So last nite I did 60.
I can't really go out for a walk because by the time I get home it's dark and my neighbourhood is kinda shady. I guess I'll need to figure sth out.
I plan to swim three times a week in the summer (I'll have more daylight time) Is swimming a kind of cardio? I mean, I really want to be in shape! *.*
Thanks for all your inputs. Yeh..I guess I was just doing that to wash off my guilt haha....

I do 130 - 150 crunches in a day... varying the type (obliques), reverse, etc.. and it has not made my waist thicker. What it does is make my core strong... and I have no tummy bulge...
you can develop a "pushed out" muscle look if you aren't doing your crunches correctly in proper form. make sure your lower back is flat to the floor, concentrate on sucking the belly button in towards the spine as you curl.
pushed out musclee look??
I do approx 150 cruches (straight and twisting-non weighted), 150 bicycle crunches (non weighted), 45 degree side bends for the obliques (with 10 lbs) and cable work (batter's swing and wood-chop's with 40 lbs) a day and I definitely have not added any inches to my waist. I have lost several since starting this program though. I posted my loss in my profile.
the muslce, instead of contracting inward is in essence squeezed outward, the shape being more round instead of lean and taught.
mmm. interesting.. ive never heard of that
yah well, talk to any body builder and the likes and they will make sure you know form form form as the most important thing to developing the muscles to look attractive and cut etc .....
Actually, form is more important for working the correct muscles and preventing injury.
that too.
