CSA farm share...anyone done one?

Quote  |  Reply

I can do a local CSA farm share for $30 per week.  It's more than I currently spend on vegetables, but it might be worth it.  My main concerns are spoilage as I'm used to using frozen veggies and what to do with some of the odd things I'll get.

Also, I'm single, but I have friends who would probably be delighted to take any excess off of my hands.

I've been a member of one for about a year. I decided to give it a try to expose myself to some new veggies, and have generally enjoyed it. My CSA is a little less expensive, but who knows how the quantities compare - I've priced it out, and the cost is about the same as buying the same things organic from a grocery store. It's a little more than I'd usually spend, too, but I figure if I actually eat it, it's worth it, and hey - it helps out a local businessman.

My biggest problem with spoilage comes when we get a bumper crop of something I'm not crazy about. For instance, the farmer grows TONS of melons, and I'm just not that big of a fan. Even if I were, my boyfriend and I would have a hard time getting through a melon per week for 8 weeks straight...yeah, I threw out quite a few moldy melons. On balance, I haven't thrown away that much, and I've learned to like quite a few things that I'd never eaten before, or thought I didn't like (dark leafy greens in particular).

It does require more planning with meals, though, as you'll have no control over what you get, and it won't wait around for you to decide you want to prepare it.

i'VE been a member of a local share for a couple of years.  I have a cow share, with it I get raw milk from grass fed cows with no hormones, or bgh.  I also get raw honey, and occasionally the meat and vegetables but the cost is prohibitive.  I do like the meat though.  The share Im part of is only an upfront fee, and then whatever I buy is delivered every 2 weeks.

I've been a member of several CSAs over a number of years and I Love them. I do a workershare - I don't have to pay anything, I just go out to the farm for at least 40 hours over the season and work off what I would have otherwise had to pay. My farms also allow you to do half shares and half workershares, where you pay half and work half or you get half a box or something. They're pretty flexible.

I get some stuff that I don't care for, but I just give it away, or trade for what I do like. The CSAs are always willing to work with you - if you don't like cabbage but love celery, they can work it out so you get way less cabbage and way more celery etc. I can never eat a whole box quick enough, though. I just chop up most of the veggies right away and freeze them. I also get goat milk, cheese, and all sorts of meats and eggs from my farm.
