how can I curb my appetite in the mornings, should I stop eating fruit?
who else wakes up very hungry in the morning? do you go overboard? I know I do. today my breakfast intake was 560 cals. :(
here is a sample of my diet today:
breakfast : I had strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, a banana, an apple, 9 grams of walnuts , 1/4 cup steel cut oats and 1/2 cup of soy milk. total of 560 cals.
then after 3 hours I had an apple as a snack ( 100 cals)
lunch: I brought 1 cup of cottage cheese and avocado, 1/2 cup kashi cereal.
snack : an apple.
Total 1100 cals before dinner.
should I eliminate fruits in the mornings? if so, what is a good non fruity breakfast besides eggs and bacon?
that's really 560 cals?
apples are 100??
Man. No wonder I only eat rasperries and blueberries!
100 calories for an apple?
I could never eat that much fruit in a day. I have fruit once a day in yogurt.
What's your total daily cals? because yeah, if you are that hungry wow. I had oatmeal for breakfast today (kashi honey/cinnamon). Yesterday I had an egg and cheese on toast. Its like you have a lot of carbs and very little fat/protein, even though you do have the walnuts there. I dunno.
Three apples a day? at 100 each? seems like a waste of calories to me. It would never ever satisfy my appetite.
Drink a boatload of water. As soon as you get up, before you eat, while you eat, after you eat.
I eat a similar breakfast to you (all fruit) and I find that incorporating nuts or peanut butter helps me feel full longer (fats). I see you are eating some walnuts, already. What I sometimes do is have half a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread, along with my fruit. That usually does the trick. I also take a long time to eat my breakfast (I actually take it to work with me and eat at my desk - usually takes me an hour or more to finish) rather than scarfing it down all at once. I think that also helps you feel more full. I'm not much of a cereal eater, but today I was running low on fruit and out of desperation I made a bowl of cereal with soymilk, and tossed in half a cup of blueberries and some mixed nuts. It was suprisingly delicious! Of course you have to eat that a little faster since it will get soggy... but you could skip the milk and make it a trail mix of sorts.
You could also maybe add a boiled egg or cooked egg white for some more protein.

CDC-
You seem surprised that apples are around 100 calories. Just out of curiosity, does that seem to you like a high amount or a low amount?
I don't see that 1100 cals before supper is all that bad really. If you're aiming for a total of 1500, 400 cals gives you reasonable scope for a nice supper.
Another time try having a bigger bowl of the porridge (oatmeal) perhaps and cut back your fruit to two or three pieces a day. I think you're only looking at minor tweaks rather than wholesale changes.
Whenever I eat only fruit for breakfast I find I am starving the rest of the day so am going to try eating some protein and fats as well, maybe an egg and some brazil nuts or something.
Not sure why it happens but fruit isn't that dense so doesn't fill me up really and has a lot of sugar so might leave you craving more?
thanks for the ideas.
adolphs: once I wake up, I open the fridge reaching for a banana. then I grab some walnuts. really, I am surprised that I wake up hungry. then I prepare my oatmeal and add some berries and I eat an apple.
I can't really wait till I prepare my breakfast and bring it to work.
Gi-Jane, why do you say that I am looking at a minor tweak? I am really thinking about replacing my oatmeal or kashi cereal with something else. Maybe a low carb diet is the answer? and by the way, I still have trouble cutting back on my fiber intake. Yesterday was 67 g of fiber. The day before was 70g. I am just surprised that with too much fiber, I wake up in the morning trying to reach for many fruits and sugary things.
I don't like PB. I might buy almond butter but I have a problem with bread. I don't buy it because I eat it very quickly. how can you eat almond butter without bread?
misscherryjane. I agree with you. A fruity breakfast makes me more hungrier.
seeing how lo cal things like strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are - I am shocked that it is so high!
I don't eat apples, so I've never had to log one or look it up.
Not worth the calories to me! I'm not an apple person. Not crazy about bananas either - but I'd expect bananas to have more calories. Not apples!

The whole reason I said that about 'minor tweaks' was precisely because I wanted to deter you from going from one extreme to another. It will be less stressful to take your current diet and improve it gradually rather than sling the baby out with the bathwater and go low-carb. You need a happy medium, not 'all or nothing'
If you're trying to eat less fibre you're not going to do so eating seven portions of fruit a day... stands to reason. Reduce fruit to two portions and you'll be able to keep in the oatmeal. Have some granary bread with your cottage cheese rather than high-fibre cereal. Yes, have some eggs at breakfast-time or some meat or fish with lunch. Snack on a slice of white toast with a little peanut butter, perhaps. Be creative about it rather than thinking the only solution is 'no-carb'.... that won't help you in the slightest.

That's where you confused me- Do you realize that 145g of bluberries is 83 calories, while 145g of apple is only 71?
Fruit is generally supposed to be eaten before a meal, not as a meal because it takes about 25-30 minutes to digest. So fruit 30 minutes before breakfast is the ideal thing to do, but not what you HAVE to do. If you can wake up, eat some fruit, wait 30 minutes and then eat a proper breakfast, I garantee you'll feel a lot better. Don't eliminate fruit at all!!
THIS REPLY IS FOR FLONKLAR. Please ignore it. So sorry to intrude.
I have 1/2 a cup of raspberries - plenty for my snack in yogurt, 32 calories (+ 50 cals for the yogurt)
or 1/4 cup of blueberries in light syrup for 50 calories. (also in yogurt)
I never eat 145 grams at a time. And I never eat fruit without protein.
I guess thats what got me?
Your breakfast is normal to me. I eat 60-70 of my calories before afternoon and the remaining in the evening. I figure this gives me plenty of fuel to start my day and I am more able to control my eating. Beside you are a healthy eater, you are probably hungry because you need the energy.
The apple thing---100 cal. How big is this apple?
my opinion, have some instant oatmeal and leave the fruit for later. Also do not wait for 3 hours until you eat again something small.
crazydiamondchrysalis: Thank you for letting me know that I eat too much fruit. I already know that and that is why I posted. I didn't ask actually how much fruit you eat. Good for you that you don't eat a 100 calorie apple. leave it for me.

dkiesser, that is what I do too. I eat most of my calories before afternoon and the remaining in the evening. I try to change that and eat smaller amounts every three or four hours. I am just not happy about consuming more than 500 cals early morning and was wondering WHY?
well, as for the apple, it is a regular size, red delicious apple, about 212g.
If you like other fruit try switching out a plum or something smaller for a snack instead of the apple, then its only 30 calories instead of a hundred. That leaves room for something like a 50 calorie string cheese, a 70 calorie egg, or something similar that may help fill you up more.
Doesn't anyone ever look anything up on CC? A whole cup of apple slices is only 65 calories. A medium apple doesn't even make one cup.
On the constructive side, try for a more balanced breakfast with some protein, whole grain (which you already have) and a serving of fruit. Make sure there is a little bit of fat in all of this. I like to sprinkle my oatmeal with a tablespoon of flaxseed meal just for small amount the omega fats. That should be lower in calories than what you described.
Then you can have a larger snack later - since that apple is only about 50 to 65 calories, you could have a teaspoon of peanut butter with it for more good fat.
I've found that if I add that little bit of fat I'm not as hungry.
Claire, thanks for the idea. according to cc, one large apple ( 212g ) is 110 calories. Am I right? since I buy large apples, there is no small ones around me, I have one as a 100 calorie snack.
and by the way, the size of the apple and how many calories it has was NOT the point of my post. Actually, I enjoy them. Way much better than 100 calorie junk food snacks.
Do you weigh the apple with the core? Do you eat the core? Some folks do...if you're one that doesn't, then try weighing the apple, minus the core...
You're right in that the apple is better than junk food. :) And instead of the bread that you say you go overboard on (I do too) try spreading the almond butter on the apple. I'm betting that you'll feel full faster/longer.
I'm actually the opposite. Most of my calories come at the end of the day...I'm not usually terribly hungry first thing in the morning, and often have to remind myself to eat breakfast.
