how can I curb my appetite in the mornings, should I stop eating fruit?

who else wakes up very hungry in the morning? do you go overboard? I know I do. today my breakfast intake was 560 cals. :(

here is a sample of my diet today:

breakfast : I had strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, a banana, an apple, 9 grams of walnuts , 1/4 cup steel cut oats and 1/2 cup of soy milk. total of 560 cals.

then after 3 hours I had an apple as a snack ( 100 cals)

lunch: I brought 1 cup of cottage cheese and avocado, 1/2 cup kashi cereal.

snack : an apple.

Total 1100 cals before dinner.

should I eliminate fruits in the mornings? if so, what is a good non fruity breakfast besides eggs and bacon?

Why not save calories for a nighttime snack? If I go to bed feeling satisfied, I don't wake up hungry at all. If I go to bed hungry, I wake up ravenous.

Or try sipping on a tall glass of water/mug of coffee while preparing your oats. That way your mouth is busy and you aren't reaching into the fridge.

You don't need to eliminate fruits in the morning at all, but instead add something more substantial. For a change from fruity breakfasts, try something fun and protein packed, such as smoked salmon, diced red onion, cucumber, and whipped cream cheese on whole grain toast. Or save your berries to mix into the oats, and choose either the apple or the banana. Even something as small as adding 6-8 oz. of yogurt on the side can make a big difference.

Good luck!

I also find it very easy to go overboard on fruit, especially if I have it 'as is'. What has worked for me is chopping it and stirring it into stuff like oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese. Even grating an apple and eating it on toast with a bit of cinnamon sprinkled on top does the trick. Anything that involves preparation seems to not make me want to reach for more. Now if the delicious apples are eyeing me from the fruit basket, and I grab one, it`s so easy that I`ll be sure to return for another until there`s none left!

ETA: I also have most of my cals at breakfast or lunch, and usually eat a pretty light dinner. It all depends on when you`re most active and need your fuel. I move around mostly during daylight, but if you were to work out at night, before going to bed, I doubt it`s a good idea to eat most your cals for breakfast.

Do you drink coffee, tea, or hot coco...  You might think about adding a warm drink to you morning routine (preferibly not one that is caffinated i suppose.. but thats a personal choice)

A lot of teas can be sweet naturally without any sugar, such as ones with hibiscus, cinnamon, rose hips, and rooibus. I prefer these types of teas more then ones made with black tea, because black tea makes me want to add milk and sugar.   Some sugar free, fat free cocos are nice too..  For me a warm drink makes me feel more satisfied then like a cup of cool water, or even a cup of juice.  If you start the water while your doing the banana, it should be cool enough to drink before you start the oatmeal and might give you a little bit more of a full feeling before you go for the apple at breakfast

Ok i know i am a tea/hot drink nut...  But its my replacement for a diet coke addiction, so for now i am good with my 5 cups of day of it :) No calories, no sodium, no HFCS or artificial sweeteners or colors..

You seem to enjoy your fruit and veggies, so i wouldn't go low carb... But maybe you could think about replacing some of your morning fruit with lower carb options such as egg whites with veggies, (I do 3 egg whites with leftover dinner veggies from the night before, tossed in the microwave for 90 seconds in a cup)

For almond butter, you can eat it with crackers, fruit (put it with your apples or banana and you might feel better.  A whole grain tortilla with almond butter, and half a sliced apple and a sprinkle of cinnamon can be a very yummy breakfast.  I don't know what you eat for dinner, but i feel like you need more veggies in your diet.. Maybe replace one of the apples with some cooked or raw veggies like carrots, peppers, celery etc that will take longer to digest.

Do you do an evening snack after dinner?  That might help you wake up less hungry if there is less of a time gap between dinner and breakfast

I used to eat non fat yogurt as my first meal but very recently started getting hungry soon after...I believe it is the sugar.  I find the most satiating thing for me now is eggs or oatmeal...for oatmeal I make the real stuff with no sugar.  These both keep me full for a while.

I like to vary my breakfast...some days I start with half a bagel and a bit of cream cheese (not like the NYC 1/2"), then I graduate to coffee which while it doesn't have a lot of calories it does keep me busy, then the other half of the bagel or a banana.  I also keep fiber one and kashi cereal at my desk just in case.

Oatmeal I have done quite well with frozen raspberries and milk.  The way I do it, it really is low on calories, maybe that's because I do the steel cut oats or maybe it's because I'm not actually weighing the food and I just think it's lower calorie.  Undecided

I agree with gi-jane, make small changes and see how they work for you instead of going hog wild.  I can change to a smear of cream cheese on my bagel instead of a think layer or go with low fat cream cheese and sprinkle cinnamon on, but changing to a 300 calorie breakfast that's completely different would throw me for a loop.

Cheshirekitty, I agree with you. It IS the sugar. I think eggs and oatmeal is a good idea.

Boston, do you eat smoked salmon in the morning ?Laughing I have never done that before. maybe I should experiment. thanks for your great ideas anyway. you are right about choosing either a banana or an apple. It does not have to be both.

Ily51: thanks so much. I loved what you said about grating the apples. I will do that and add grated appled to my oatmeal. I am excited to try. Yes LOL how did you know that the delicious apples are eyeing me from the fruit basket so I grab one and reach for more? you know what I did today?  I didn't eat apples because the basket was just empty. so I had cottage cheese, yogurt, wheat germ and flaxseed and I was satisfied.

Penguness: I drink chamomile and african honey bush tea without sugar. that is all what I drink because I have stomach inflammation.so do you think I should start with a warm drink? i have a friend who drinks warm water and I don't know why? to be honest with you, I am scared to buy almond butter. I don't know if I can control myself if I open the jar in the morning. I cant trust myself if I have bread or crackers so adding the butter to my apples IS a VERY good idea. thanks so much. yes, I did replace my snacks and tried to have carrots, celery as snacks. but see there is something tricky here. I have a stomach inflammation and too much fiber cause me severe bloating. my fiber intake goes sometimes to 70 g. so  I don't know.

no I don't do any evening snacks. I eat around 12 am. I wake up at 5 or 6 am. only 4 or 5 hours difference in between breakfast and dinner :)

thanks so much for your help.

Cheshirekitty77: thanks for the idea. Eggs and oatmeal are the best.

Dear Sara, thanks:)  I can't eat bagel:( you are right about making small changes and I totally agree with you regarding the other post. I think my body just gets used to exercise. thanks for pointing that out.

You guys ARE great support.

Oh gosh, it`s absolutely the same for me.. when I run out of apples I can go for days without having one and don`t even think about them. But when they are there, well, they don`t last long! I`ve started just buying one or two apples at a time, but then my mother figures I`m running low on grocery money and decides to do me a favour and buy 2 kilos. I know she means well and it gives me opportunity to exercise portion control, so it`s all good. :)

Let me know if you ever find a magic way to curb the fruit cravings, preferably one that doesn`t involve taking up smoking or using drugs. xD

I'm confused here...maybe I just don't really like fruit as much as I think I do...I really can't eat enough fruits to matter.  A banana or 2 is 150-300 calories, apples even 1 or 2 or 3 just is about the same.  Oranges again, about 3 is all I can do at one sitting.

If I'm eating a couple hundred calories of fruit, then I'm typically not eating even more calories of ice cream or chocolate or other sweets and snacks because I fell fuller and just don't want to bother with it (it also helps that I don't keep much of them around).  If I'm super duper hungry, it's generally because I haven't eaten and need the calories or because I've exercised a bunch and need the calories.

Hi

I wake up famished in the mornings with my stomach literally growling.  I must admit though that for me, fruit simply does not fill me up at all.  I can eat it and eat it and eat it and still feel hungry.

The best breakfast in my book is having Special K cereal, 2 cups which is about 230 cals, Alpro soya milk which is about 35 and then having a no fat yoghurt.

I walk for 50 minutes to work every day after having that for breakfast and it gives me the energy I need, I don't feel hungry when I get to work and it does really satisfy me for around 320 cals.

If you don't want that many cals then have 1 cup of cereal and that cuts around 114 cals off.

I feel like that every morning! I remember what my grandmother used to do (she's always been so thin!!!) in the morning. While preparing breakfast, she drinks a whole cup of herbal tea. I've been doing this for the past week and it's been working great!

This is driving me nuts and I'm sorry if somebody else already said this, but breakfast is probably my heavier meal bc I have all day to work it off! I tend to go with either 2 fried eggs on a non stick pan and a slice of ham and a piece of fruit OR a fried egg on a whole wheat light english muffin....that does me very well until lunch and your looking at 300-400 calories and being very satisfied! I eat TONS of fruit and LOVE my fruit and for lunch if you have some tuna w light miracle whip (or plain) and a large salad with cucumbers/green peppers etc and some light dressing, you've just opened up a whole lot of calories for dinner. Laughing

Sorry if I am posting something over, I just got tired of reading about the apple..

I would increase the amount of oatmeal and add a tbs of almond or sunflower seed butter to it.  Or add some Greek non fat yogurt to it, it really increases the protein.

I also eat way too much fruit, but I love it!!  I guess I don't eat it for breakfast much except maybe in a smoothie with FF Greek yogurt..and only before swimming since it does not fill me up as much as grains and protein.

Seems like others have already suggested eggs, cottage chees ect...

Good Luck!

i can only eat fruit for breakfast if i accompany it with a protein shake. Ive been using a generic knock off of slimfast and while the slimfast diet sucks...its okay for breakfast. I stay full for a couple of hours. Otherwise maybe try to eat just the oats for breakfast with some blueberries and soymilk. I know half a cup of oats is 150, the blueberries maybe around 40 and 1/2 light soymilk is 40. Not bad and it should keep you full. Then drink a lot of water with it. Water is key if you dont feel full after a meal. Other then that you can save the fruit you would have regularly had for breakfast and disperse them into snacks for the rest of the day.
