curious...weird eating habits from ED/OCD?
This may be in the wrong forum, I was just wondering has anyone else developed or had weird eating habits since an eating disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder? I have always had some quirks from my OCD, but since my eating disorder I laugh and question myself when I find myself doing these behaviors. In therapy, I see a lot of others also have the same concern or do similar behaviors. Some of mine include-
- Cutting up my sandwich or whatever I am eating into very, very small pieces and eating them with silverware, even if it was a sloppy joe or turkey sandwich
- Dipping my sandwiches/crackers/fruit/cookies in milk
- Ripping up my sandwiches and dropping them in milk, then eating it like soup
- Cutting up scrambled eggs, salad leaves, spaghetti
- Cutting up my english muffin or bagel upside down
- Taking forever to cut up a piece of fruit because I refuse to bite into it
- Mixing foods like peanut butter with tomato, chicken, turkey etc.
- Eating foods lighter in color first, then darker ones later
- I hardly ever use ketchup/mustard/salt/pepper anymore, maybe its the whole 'fear of calories' thing
- Experimenting with microwaving foods and seeing what tastes good
- Eating either really fast, or really slowly.
Those are just a few of them, but I have seen people overuse condiments to an extreme, have the compulsion to eat every little crumb and finish everything 100% and of course, cutting up food beyond belief.
I'm doing better now at controlling them, but I was just wondering out of curiosity.
I also have to eat within an hour of waking up
I can't believe I have that many weird habits, what a freak! Oh well, they keep me sane for now!

Me too; I semi-freak-out when I have to have a blood test or something and can't eat in the mornings within an hour of getting up >_<.

Fourth here! I dont know why, but I always have to have at least 1-2 slices of toast within an hour of waking up, even on morings where I over sleep for work and have little time I still have to have at least a handful of cereal.
Also some other ones I thought of include:
- Freaking out about eating past 9pm
- Organizing condiments in my fridge
- Obsessivly checking expiration dates of my foods and stressing about spoiling produce.
- Anxiety if I have to eat both lunch and dinner out.
- i eat sandwiches with a knife and fork, crusts first
- weighing everything especially fruit
- slicing apples up into small pieces. actually i hate biting into anything really.. ill break bits off with my hands or eat with cutlery
- i count the amount of times i chew every mouthful and i hate if it's not over 20, love if it's close to 40
- always have water when i am eating
- i have to eat something before i go to bed because i fear waking up hungry in the night
- fascination with what other people are eating, watching them prepare or eat food
- i sniff foods to work out what they taste like, e.g. my dads eating a pasta dish i will sniff it, or if there is chocolate or peanut butter in my house i can stand and sniff it for ages, or if i cant decide what to eat i sniff everything to work out what i am craving
- going in food shops or supermarkets and 'window shopping', reading all the labels or just looking at all the food.. even things like meat that i'd never eat.. reading the calories on ALL pre-packaged sandwiches if there happen to be any in the shops im in, even if i'm not going to buy one :|
- i hate drinking calories
- arranging food in the kitchen cupboards so it's all in order and looks neat and tidy
- always asking my family if they want anything to eat or drink.. cooking and preparing food for anyone whenever they want it, baking for my mums clients who i don't even know
- won't eat anything unless i have checked the use by date
- 'inspecting' my food before i eat it.. like looking at slices of bread from all angles etc to make sure it's as it should be
- i get really irritable and stressed waiting for food.. or if i go out with my family and we don't have a 'plan' for lunch i get really tense and snappy. :(
- i get nervous when other people handle or prepare food, e.g if my dads frying an egg or something i get all tense like he's gonna break it, or if i watch someone making a sandwich and they just smoosh all the fillings in it and whack the top on i feel so nervy and weird
- i HATE it when someone's food is waiting on the table/has finished cooking in the microwave.. and they leave it to get cold while they finish what they are doing or whatever .. like if my mum puts something in the microwave and then goes and checks her email while its cooking and then the microwave beeps and she doesnt come through for about 3 minutes i feel sooo like.. tense and stressed. i'll just sit in the kitchen staring at the clock until she comes back :|
- i hate it when i buy food in a shop and the person that serves me packs the grocery bag. i feel really stressed like it's all getting ruined and i have to go through the bags and re-arrange it all

- Don't like eating in front of people, but hate preparing my food in front of others ecen more.
- I cut all of my food into really small pieces, and rip small pieces off food so I don't have to bite into the whole thing (especially with stuff like bananas and cereal bars)
- I use small knives and forks, big ones mean I put more food in my mouth and I feel like a pig.
- I hate different foods touching each other with a lot of meals. Rice and curry being one where they absolutely must NOT touch 'cause the rice gets stuck to stuff and will not be removed.
-I chew everything LOADS before I swallow it and will not pick up my next forkful until I've swallowed my current mouthful. This means when I eat with people, they've normally finished before I'm halfway done xD
Thee are probably other things I've not thought of. Nice to know other people do stuff like this xxx
I thought I was the only one who always and had to have small forks and knives. When I am at a restaurant and have large utensils my heart starts to race and i feel uncomfortable with everything.
I also put a lot of food in my mouth at once and chew it until its liquid before i swallow.
I have to wipe my mouth and hands with a napkin between each bite
- Must know how everything is cooked
-If i am going out to eat I check the menu of the restaurant before hand.
-I wont eat unless everyone else is eating
-wont eat alone
- I section off foods on my plate and eat clock wise bite per bite then when each section is half as much as the amount it was I stop and eat counter clockwise.
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
