The Curse of Skinny legs!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I'm probably gettin ahead of myself here, but can any one suggest any exercises for building upper legs using free weights. I do squats and thats about it so any more to add a bit of variety would be greatly appreciated

cheers,

Colin

You could do lunges, and lunge jumps (without the weights though for the jumps). I also do squat jumps but thats bad for knees so i would only recommend them if you've got good knees. Im a gymnast so things we do at gym include burpees, box jumps (where you've got a high surface like a chair or low table and you jump onto it then back off), mountain climbers and such. Hope this is some help to you =)

i think of legs as the whole package, butt and all.  you'll get the most bang for your buck w/compound lifts (like your squats); but if you specifically want big calves, you probably have to work on that w/some isolated stuff.

i've done bulgarian/single leg split squats, deadlifts (standard and stiff-legged), step-ups, walking lunges, regular forward lunges, reverse lunges, cleans, snatches or even just high pulls, front squats, back squats (w/dumbbells or barbell).  you can look these up on youtube or on exrx.net (or just ask me) if you're unfamiliar w/any of the lifts i mentioned.

Thanks for the advice guys! I've added front and side lunges to my workout. Gave my lower body a hard workout last nite, this mornin my legs are dead, definately hit the spot.  As my leg strength increases I'll add the more advanced exercises to my routine. Cheers.
