Cut out soda, fast food and added excercise but still gaining weight?!?!

Quote  |  Reply
So I started exercising 3/week for at least an hour in april I lost a few inches but no weight In July I stopped but after gaining 10 pounds (up to 185) I started my routine of cardio and weight training and even go 3-4 times a week for 60-90minutes after a month nothing I cut out all soda and fast food 2 wks ago Since then I have gained 5 more pounds (190) I'm 5'4" my goal weight is 135-140. But at this rate I don't think I have any chance I can't even maintain this weight. I have started eating more and more fresh fruits and vegetables and for the next week or two I'm only going to drink water and skim milk no more gatorade or vitamin water or unsweetened iced tea. has anyone else had this same reaction to dieting and exercise? I feel like that commercial where the wife can't lose any weight but her husband can't stop LOSING weight. My husband has lost 60lbs in the last 8months because of his ADHD medication. He still eats fast food 6-8/week and doesn't exercise ever. He's trying to support me but every-time he comments about me putting a few croutons on my salad or having a frozen yogurt I want to strangle him. It's so frustrating to change my lifestyle completely and not see any effects while he does the same thing but gets to take a pill and loses weight everyday. By the way My husband who is 6'4" is 190lbs I now only weigh 1 lb less than him I want to dive into a pool of fudge and eat until I pass out. Someone tell me what I need to do please.

What is your calorie intake per day?  That may play a part in it.  The sweetened drinks definitely add a lot of calories if you're not watching them closely, so that may play a part.  Cutting those out should definitely help.

I used to exercise all the time and didn't drop a pound. It all boils down to calories. Now I exercise and watch calories and get results. I tried even portion control and exercise and that still didn't work. You may just have to be anal about your caloric intake.

Good luck!

Michelle

Try logging EVERYTHING you eat.  I just started a batch of homemade chicken soup and in the course, ate about 1/2 a cup of chicken without even thinking.  Any chance you've replaced the fast food with somrthing else so are still eating as many calories?
Looks like everyone said what I wanted to say. Gotta watch every calorie!

Also don't beat yourself up so much. If this was easy, we'd all have super hot bodies!
watching the calories is they KEY!!!!

I was exercising for weeks on end and my scale didnt BUDGE!!! Once i started planning my meals at the beginning of the day rather than logging as i go, and sticking stricktly to my 1500 cal per day, guess what I lost 3 pounds this week!!!!! My goal was only one pound!!!  Ive cut out a lot of fat out of my meals as well.   Just stick with it.   Set SMALL goals for yourself.  They are much more rewarding as you go along on your path.

It also sounds like your husband is not very supportive of your efforts. It seems he lost weight off some medication, and that is not a healthy way to do it.   It might help if you talk to him and explain your efforts are important to you, and you need his support, rather than critisism.  Not only can critisism kill your self esteem and motivation, it can also kill your relationship too.

Just keep with it, I will be your friend and support you!!!

** go for the fudge **  oops, sorry

yea, like they said, count every calorie, it's amazing that these tiny little starburst candies are really 30 calories each.  i think it's the little things that you don't realize just how many calories they have until you added them .....  chocolate chips for instance 80 cal for a spoon full! and mayo!

once you start looking at the calories, you'll find lower calorie options at the market  stick with it! it's really worth the effort when an old friend tells you you look good!    =)

I'm not an expert on weight loss, however, maybe you should start measuring your portions.  I lost weight and inches last year when I hired a trainer and spent 3 hours a week in the gym lifting weights and using the machines.  I also walked 1/2 hour daily.  People noticed my loss.  However, I stopped having the trainer, didn't make myself visit the gym and eventually gained all of my weight back. I am beginning to work out at a friend's house now and I am measuring my portions using the food pyramid.  I learned that I have been consuming entirely too many calories because I eat 3 times what I should be eating.Cool  The next few days try to measure your food and I bet you will be surprised, too.  Good luck!  I'll be working on my weight gain, too!

Calories, calories, calories. If you don't put it into your mouth, you can't gain it as fat. It's as simple as that. You MUST count calories and you must stick to your limit. It seems hard at first because you'll be horrified at how much you really are eating. I was so  horrified and depressed to see how very little 1200 calories really is. It takes time to adjust to less food.

Exercise alone is not enough, and simply cutting out fast food and soda is not enough. You could get obese on apples if you really wanted to. Count the calories and plan ahead.

As for your husband's comments on croutons and frozen yogurt, instead of getting defensive when he points out possible flaws in your diet,  maybe just accept that he's probably 100% correct and that's probably why it's pissing you off.

When I announced to my husband the other evening that I really wanted to have cake, I was mildy annoyed when he asked me if cake fits into my nutritional plan or into my calorie allowance. After a few minutes of feeling defensive, it occured to me that he was RIGHT. Of course it didn't. What's more, I had actually asked him for his support and help in staying on track. He was just doing what I wanted him to do, and the excessive eater in me was objecting to being reminded of my comittment.

It is these daily choices of whether to have that cake or not that makes all the difference.

I googled "sample 1400 calorie diets" and ended up at the Xenical site of all places. They have awesome sample 1200, 1400, and 1600 cal diets in PDF formats with variations like hispanic fare, southern fare, etc. If I just eat what they say or substitute with something I know has equal calories, I have no problem maintaining my calorie intake. I love not having to think! Plus, if I don't eat all of a meal (say, breakfast as I find it hard to consume a lot right away in the morning) I just put it in the fridge and next time I'm hungry, I finish it. Today I had an eggo nutrigrain waffle with some natural peanut butter and half a cup of plain, low fat yogurt with cantaloupe in it for breakfast. I never would have thought of that on my own! I find logging the food helps too, as does being aware of the calorie count in everything. I could not believe how much I was eating when I discovered how much pizza, McDonalds, Pepsi, etc, had in it.....I was the type to eat once or twice a day, but really pack it in when I did. When I saw that my suggested intake was 1400 cal, I about fainted; I thought, I'll never survive on that! Not only am I surviving, I feel better than ever, even though it seems easier to movea mountain than my scale. Best of luck!

Lots of good advice here, but I haven't heard anyone say quality of food. Eat clean and lean. That means no star-burst candies - no frozen meals (preservatives and sodium cause water retention) low fat quality foods like low- or non fat real cheese - not 'all natural' - all natural means all of what is natural, is natural - not what is added as again, preservative, or filler. REAL cheese on the label is key. You can always tell a fake cheese from real cheese in how it melts. - or doesn't melt. Lay low on the Lo fat cookies and pastries. Since we don't have exposure to each other's food diaries - I have no idea what you are actually eating. Just trying to cover the bases Wink

The point to be taken is not about cheese - but about all untouched- and foods in their natural state - a steak, not meat loaf...

Just another random thought that may inspire you to say no to sugar.

My problem has always been allowing myself to slip in some dessert that doesn't fit my calorie allowance.

I never used to think about this when I was younger, but now that I'm in my 30s I have started to notice a few lines here and there around my eyes. Some signs of aging. I don't mind it so much, but my dermatologist explained to me how the presence of GLUCOSE in your bloodstream naturally leads to an effect called GLYCATION or crosslinking, which causes the collegen in your skin to become stiff and inflexible, which causes wrinkled, damaged skin.

People with diabetes have an especially difficult time with premature aging because of this, but the effect happens anytime we have higher levels of bloodsugar, such as after eating a sugary dessert. The same effect occurs in people who smoke....whereas people who eat low sugar, high antioxidant diets have much more youthful skin into their 40s and 50s.

So...it occurs to me that  I don't want to LOOK OLD before my time.  I find it easier to put down the spoon when I remember that I'm actually damaging my skin's structure and speeding my face toward sagginess by eating this intense sugar that my body was never designed to handle.
