Cyclists -- 1000 mile challenge. Anybody interested

Quote  |  Reply
My proposal is an average of 100 miles per week for the next 10 weeks.  That is 1000 miles by May 19.  Anybody interested?

I wish I could, but we still have ice and snow on the ground (about 2-4 feet of snow depending on where you are standing). I did pull down my bicycle this morning (it hangs on wall in the winter months) and blew off the cobwebs. I can smell Spring in the air and I am more than willing to join in when the roads are safe for riding.
Count me in, but let me up mine a bit!  My goal for this year is 10,000 miles that would be around 200 miles a week, so 10 weeks *200=2000 for me.

I will up-date every few days to keep the post hot.

Got in 30 outside today, first nice day in a long time (live in Ohio), have been doing all my riding on my trainer.  Looking forward to more nice days, rain tomorrow, BOOOOOO.

DAN
Okay.  It was a shot in the dark.  I will have to start keeping my journal.

I put in 2500 miles in the second half of last year.  That surprised the heck out of me.  I am not sure what I am going to be able to do this year so I figured I'd set my goal at 5000.  So far I have about 400.  I have some catching up to do.

Dan, you do your 2000.  I'll do at least 1000.  That will be cool.

Lollipop, maybe you can jump in when the weather gets more rideable.
jc, sounds like a plan!

Lollipop, spring is jusrt around the corner, hang in there won't be long now!

come on all you cyclist out there in c-c land, join the fun!!
I would say that I would join the challenge but I am still finding my feet cycling again.  I just started up after 7 years of not doing so.  But I will post with you lot on how I am doing though if that is ok? I hope to have it up to 100 a week eventually, but don't really want to half kill myself trying it just yet.

Jack
I tagged this thread so I can find it later. =)

TJ: Sounds good.  About a year and a half ago, I started getting serious about riding again after something like 25 years.  I dragged out my Ross Grand Prix 10 speed and started do some 10 milers on Saturdays.  It didn't take long for that bike to pull up lame.  The bike shops I went to refused to consider fixing it so I had to replace it.  By the end of the year, I was able to commute to work -- about 10 miles each way.  I commuted a few times last January and February according to my diary.  Sometime in March, I joined a bike club to improve my riding.  I have made some friends in the club and definitely improved my riding.

Take your time.  Make sure you are having fun.  And keep us posted.
I'm in. I have about 600 in so far this year, and I'm on my way to 100 for this week (going for a 60-miler in the morning, unless there's ice on the roads).

I'm aiming for Brasstown Bald at the end of April, so I have to ride, ride, ride, and then ride some more!
behanna, Brasstown bald, man we ain't got nothing like that here is OhiO.  Planiing on going to the carolina mountains this summer to see what real climbing is like!!

Just to up date:84(since the 9th) 263(since March 1st)  going out the door for a ride looking for 80 miles today, I'll let you know how it goes!
Does spinning count?  My problem is that my commute is 1.5 hrs each way, so during the week I have little time for outdoor riding.  I do, however, belong to a gym near my office and spin about 4.5 hrs per week (3 days).  I get out on my fixed gear bike on the weekends and usually do 2 25-30 mile rides.  I'm in if you'll let me count my spinning "miles"!
Absolutely -- include your spinning.

totally agree, if your on a bike of any kind it should count.

never did spinning, have heard it's great workout.
Well made 87 miles today, rode with two different clubs one for 57 other 30.  Weather in the 40's but wonderful sun shine allday.
I've been putting it in my journal.  I did 16 miles -- mostly short climbs -- yesterday.  Today I did a 33 mile pace ride.  Plan to bike commute Monday and Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday.  Then I will be tied up with a meeting through the weekend.
I would LOVE to, but there's still alot of snow on the ground and it's too cold to bike yet.   I would start the challenge in May though.
Put in 2x23 mile rides on a fixed gear over the weekend.  I get a much better workout over these shorter distances on a fixed gear bike than on a traditionally geared bike.  For the rest of the week, I'll have to spin.  With the effort I put into a spinning workout, I usually get about 18 miles per hour average on the moderately hilly road, so I'll be conservative and estimate 16 or 17 miles per hour for spinning.  And, yes, it's a great workout.  I use a heart rate monitor and tune the workout to suit my goals.  I very often end up doing something very different from the rest of the class, but that's OK.
KC: Good post -- those are good ideas.

Commuted today - 9.4 miles in and 12.3 miles home = 21.7.  But I was dragging from this weekend.  This will either get me into great shape or kill me.
I need to amend that ride report.  Thanks to day light savings time, it was dark when I rode in.  The weather report called for 32 F with light breezes.  But I am pretty sure it was colder than that.  It took several minutes for my fingers to thaw.

On the other hand, I rode home in bright sunshine in 60 F temperatures.  The wind was a bit challenging.
Yes the wind can be a real b--ch this time of year.

jc, I have always read that after a hard ride you should just spin easy the next day to stay loose, this way you give your legs a rest, but the spinning helps the blood flow to repair the muscles.  I did that today myself, rode the trainer 22 miles and keep the effort easy and under 15 mph.
just pushing the thread back up
