Daily Fat Grams for Weight Loss ?? Magic number anyone??

Quote  |  Reply

Interested in what a good range is for daily fat grams. I know the calculation of multiplying your daily calories by .30 and then divide by 9. That # just seems really high to me. Is that the calculation for maintenance or loss? I am 5 ft 3 and 212 lbs. I have been on CC for about 1 month now and have lost 17 lbs. (calories ranging fromm 1200-1400 daily) The first week I had a big loss and now I seem to be on a steady loss of 1-2 lbs per week. Could I be doing better if my fat grams were lower or am I doing myself "harm" by not having enough fat in my diet. Help I'm a little lost here. Dazed and confused in Diet Land Smile

That number is correct, but make sure the fats you are eating are HEALTHY fats. Try to make a majority of the fat intake monounsaturated and omega-3 fats.

mrsbressler, keeping the percentage of fat in your diet below 30% (of your calories) helps to ensure that you're getting enough nutrients.  beyond that, it has nothing to do with weight loss.  you lose weight by keeping your caloric intake lower than your caloric expenditure.  if you wanted to, you could eat nothing but butter and still lose weight (you'd feel like crap, but you could do it).

Ohhh what a diet.  My brother in law always teases me and says that if it were socially acceptable I would peal a stick of butter and eat it like a banana.  But I do know the difference between good fat and bad.  So I have started using whipped butter and only use one serving at a meal.

Keep in mind 1-2 pounds per week is the healthiest rate of weight loss. You probably need to eat more to prevent yourself from reaching a complete plateau in the near future.

On an unrelated note, I once saw a guy eat an entire stick of butter, just unwrap it and pop it in his mouth. It was part of a comedy show, but my reaction was one of horror.

Anywhere from 20-70% of your total calories being from fat is fine (assuming it's all good fat).

I am on a high fat diet to treat a neurological disorder, but there are many people who find a high fat low carb diet is beneficial to them, whether it is for losing weight, stabalizing blood sugar or managing medical conditions like diabetes, parkinsons, mood disorders, brain cancer & epilepsy.

My numbers are 10-15% carb, 10-25% protein, 60-80% fat. For theraputic value I try to keep my fat as high as possible, & yes it's a daily challenge to keep the ratio.

Many people lose weight on low carb high fat diets, hence all of the "diet programs" on the market. When I was on a calorie restricted low fat diet to lose weight I found I was much hungrier than I am now on an unrestricted high fat low carb diet. For me it not only works on a therputic level, but also on a nutritional level.

There is a lot of backlash on this website regarding "low carb diets," and understandably so considering the "fads" of days past. There is, however, a theraputic benefit to lowcarb high fat diets for some people, and much of propoganda "against low carb" is just that.

All bodies are different. I think it's important to listen to what your own body is telling you. If it's ravenous, something about your diet might need to change.

Thank you all for all the info. I have not been hungry at all. In fact it took a while to balance my days out so that it was not 9 PM and only 800-900 calories in. All is cool in that department. I do eat what I want when I want, it's just sometimes one glorious bite of something just to satisfy the crave. One greasy bite of cheesy pizza is surprisingly better than ever after a month of being a "good girl".Innocent I just wanted to see if I could be doing anything more to help this go away quicker. I guess patience is needed, not my strongest virtue. Thanks all , any other info or replies would be great or buddies to stay on track with.
