Non-Dairy milk question
Is there such a thing as non-dairy milk that actually just tastes like milk? I've been considering cutting a lot of dairy out of my diet, but I hate flavored soy milk. Its so weird to put vanilla or whatever on my cereal. Any suggestions?
Have you tried any of the plain non-dairy milks? You might be pleasantly surprised with some brands. I'll give you some suggestions on brands. And go for plain or original, although none will taste just like cow milk but they are all so good!
Edensoy
Vitasoy - warning on this brand though it is pretty sweet tasting but soooooooo good!

thanks!
almond milk is more the consistency of cow's milk, and most people like the taste a lot better than soymilk. i think it tastes more similar, myself. you should give it a try anyway. :)
If you are lactose-intolerant, you can get a couple of brands of cows milk that have the lactose removed. Sorry, I forget the brand names as I drink regular milk but I have seen adverts in magazines lately. Might be a little pricier but at least it would taste like cow's milk! You could probably find it on google... Otherwise, I'm a fan of plain soy, or fibre-enriched. I have also tried almond, sheep and goats milk, but the latter two are pretty rich and definitelyy have their own flavour. I find almond milk a little sweet and watery, personally.
I like soy milk, and almond milk, but none compare to cow milk. They each have a taste all their own.
I guess I like almond milk the best (as far as milk substitutes go), though it is very thin and watery.
I usually have the almond milk in my cereal or oatmeal, but if I am just drinking a glass of milk, it has to be cow's milk.
My personal favorite is Silk soy milk. Their plain is good, but they also have a "no sugar added" version (in a teal container) that is even better as a milk substitute, in my opinion.
I thought oat milk tasted the most similar to cow milk, though it is sweeter because sugar is added.
Thanks guys. Maybe I'll try some milk substitutes for other things, but stick to cow's if I'm just drinking milk. Its just that I love milk so much! And the substitutes are all so sweet tasting...
Ok but let us know if you try any milks. I think you would really like some of the soy milk brands listed. I could drink glasses of em myself. Although i don't but only because i have a very limited amount of calories!
A friend of mine with lactose intolerance loves rice milk. Not sure how it compares to cows milk though.
She also drinks "Lactose free (cows) milk" which has the enzymes put in it. Would work if you have lactose intolerance but wouldn't if you're allergic to dairy.
Try fortified oat milk. Oat milk will change your life.
Okay, going to the grocery store today. I'll see what they have there.
Thanks for all your advice. And for those who are wondering, no I'm not lactose intolerant (thank God!!! I don't know what I'd do without my ice cream!), I'm just a vegetarian whose been getting more and more strict as the days go by. I don't want to be entirely dairy-free (at least not yet, anyway), but I want to give reducing it a try.
I think original (unflavored) rice milk is a lot like skim cows milk in it's consistency and I don't think it has as strong of a flavor as soy milk. I drink Rice Dream Orignal Enriched!
Has anyone tried hemp milk at all? I'm curious about it.
Hemp milk is delicious, but it's almost twice as expensive as the other nondairy milks I like, so I only buy it when it is on sale. I highly recommend Living Harvest's vanilla hemp milk. It's rich and creamy and has a wonderful nutty flavor. I haven't tried any other brands, but I've been warned that they aren't nearly as good.
Most of the time I buy Almond Breeze or make my own sesame milk. Sesame milk has a distinct flavor, which I like, but if you are looking for something similar to dairy milk, I'd suggest almond. My omni friend tells me that she can't tell the difference between dairy milk and almond milk on cereal, at least.
