NO dairy for 2 weeks! HeLp!
So I just went to the food allergist...he said no dairy for two weeks...which isn't a huge deal except I loooove my egg whites for breakfast
and cereal as a snack..any low cal non-dairy, but filling breakfast suggestions?
i really don't believe egg whites count as dairy even though they are kept by the milk products. so, your egg whites for breakfast are probably fine. maybe add a morning star sausage patty and some whole wheat toast?
also, check the ingredients in your cerial. many don't contain milk products, so you could still enjoy them dry or on top of a fruit only smoothy. Frozen fruit, blended with banana and fruit juice. the banana gives the creamy texture.
good luck. i feel for you. i love milk and milk products. but it can be done!
You could always try soy milk with your cereal. I think it counts an non-dairy, but you might want to call the doctor's office to make sure.
I am almost certain the egg whites would be okay. They aren't dairy.
Erm, when is the last time you saw someone milking a chicken? Eggs are not dairy! Think of creatures you can milk -- "dairy" refers to products produced from milk.
But your cereal (and any other commercially made product) may contain dairy derivatives You need to research what exactly constitutes dairy and start reading labels. Didn't your doctor send you home with a list?
Dairy includes cheese, yogurt, milk, cream, ice cream, butter and its many derivative proteins like whey.
So enjoy your eggs, but watch your baked goods.
... Eggs aren't dairy! Heh.
I recently had to cut dairy out of my diet. I use alternative products like soy/rice milk and so on, now. I agree with javagen in that you ought to do a little research online on what contains dairy but I'm wondering, do you need to avoid just dairy, or lactose? There are the obvious things to avoid like cheese, yoghurt, cream, butter, but there are not so obvious sources of lactose (if that's what you need to stay away from) in lots of things.

If you want ice cream, a good alternative I've found is frozen bananas. P: Breakfast, I agree with the other examples posted. Use soy/rice/oat or another dairy-free milk in your porridge or cereal, or have some toast with your eggs? Either way, it not so hard. :] Good luck!
yeah i'm an idiot....i was upset when i got home lol thanks for the advice&ideas![]()
javagen & lalabanana he didn't say anything about deriviatives he just said a "strict 2 week no dairy diet" soo do you think I should look for lactose in my foods as well?
You could buy the non-dairy egg whites for a few weeks. Use almond or rice or soy milk for your cereal. Sorbet instead of ice cream.
Oh no!
I'm your girl-I eat very, very little dairy and keep the Lactaid company in business!
Eggs:
You could boil some real eggs, chop them up (and salt them). I eat them this way all the time. Or just keep some boiled eggs (in the shell) in the refrigerator and eat them like a snack. Brush your teeth right away though! Watch out for egg breath! haha
Break open the egg and just use the half a shell to separate the egg white, so easy. Some people mix in liquid, like milk to have them fluffy. Instead use one tbsp water to two egg whites and it will be good.
Cereal:
Cereal is not usually your friend if you are lactose intolerant, neither are cereal bars for the most part.
Try oatmeal, steel cut oats, grits, and other plain stuff. You can toast oatmeal in a pan or the oven for 10 minutes to make them crunchier. Bran flakes are usually ok. Get a raisin bran mix and it is actually tastes kind of good as a dry snack.
You could switch to nuts or carrots if you are going for the crunchy aspect. You could switch to fruit if you are going for the sweet side.
Just some thoughts.
Stevielyn: I'm not sure, ha. You could cut it if you want to, but I suppose the doctor would've probably mentioned it. There's dairy sensitivity and there's lactose intolerance, two different things as far as I can remember.
Bettypage: "You can toast oatmeal in a pan or the oven for 10 minutes to make them crunchier."
What? Seriously? Hahaha, I'm SO trying that tomorrow!
oops! oh sorry. I meant to say DRY oatmeal. haha
Eggs aren't 'dairy'... an egg allergy would be a seperate issue.
Right, but I think she is talking about some egg carton mix right? I don't ever eat those so don't know about them.
You said you weren't sure if you could have lactose but from what I understand, no dairy means no dairy. If there is lactose in something, there is milk in it. Milk is dairy.
Trust me, I know how hard it is to give something up. I was diagnosed with Celiac's disease a few years ago and now I'm also vegan trying to go raw. Do the best you can and remember it's for your health!
Check it out: this isn't as bad as it seems. Really! I Promise! I have a dairy allergy as well as a wheat allergy (when I found out I was allergic to wheat do I almost died). Soy milk is great, try the "very very vanilla" until you get used to the taste then switch to just "vanilla". Cereals don't usually have milk in them but check the area right under the nutrition label and they usually put the "Allergens" in bold at the bottom.
It might take some time to get used to but once you realize this actually isn't a big deal you might like it and switch over completely! :-)

Yeah, actually I'd watch out for anything involving dairy. If he had just said "milk" or "cheese" that would be different.
