Ok folks.  I can't stand a lot of synth and a lot of electric bass beat during my work out.  I'm looking for outstanding and upbeat classic-, prog-, art-, and jam-rock songs to add to my play list.

Some of what I have:

Pink Floyd: Welcome to the Machine, Money, Run Like Hell, In the Flesh, Another Brick in the Wall, Have a Cigar

Phish: Rift, Bouncing Around the Room, YEM, Foam, Fee, Reba, My Sweet One, Run Like an Antelope, Poor Heart, Tweezer

Led Zeppelin: Communication Breakdown, Whole Lotta Love, Living Loving Maid, Ramble On, When the Levee Breaks, Moby Dick, The Crunge, The Ocean

Doors: Break on Through (of course), Peace Frog, Touch Me

Bee Gees: (Yeah, I'm going there.  And only in the privacy of my own house where my heterosexuality is above dispute)  Nights on Broadway, Night Fever, Stayin' Alive

Rolling Stones:  Get off of My Cloud, Paint it Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Not Fade Away, more than I can count

Beatles: Everything from the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack, Everything from Meet the Beatles, Everything from Sgt. Pepper, Everything from the White Album, etc...

Rush: Red Barchetta, Fly By Night

The Pixies: Here Comes Your Man, Where is My Mind

Just to name a few.  Any other favorites or reccomendations would be welcome.

Oh.  The Who:  Pinball Wizzard, A Quick One While He's Away, The Seeker, My Generation...and many more!

So you like classic rock.  How about some of these...

Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way

Manfred Mann - Blinded by the Light

Triumph - Lay it on the Line

Bryan Adams - Summer of '69

Foreigner - Juke Box Hero

...just off the top of my head

Other than Blinded by the Light, which for some reason I've always had a problem with, excellent choices.  Thanks!

Always more rush.  I'll have to find some more rockin and less groovin Steely Dan, like Bodhisatva maybe.  Steve Miller is good.  Swingtown, Keep on Rockin' me Baby.  Pretty much all of Van Halen's 1984.  Excellent.  Thanks!

Definitely early FF.  Before they got so moody.

I thought I was the only one to work out to Pink Floyd!  I also love Metallica (Black album or And Justice for All).  I will have to get The Who in my i-pod.

My all-time favorite workout song:

Breaking Benjamin-- "Blow Me Away". It makes me feel stronger and faster!

So I had never heard of these guys.  They're pretty solid considering that they've got that really medium heavy 2000's Nicklebacky rock sound that I have a hard time adjusting to.  They bear further investigation though.

On another note I decided to add some 90's stuff to my playlist:

Smashing Pumpkins

311

Rage Against the Machine (Awesome for Lifting)

I guess I was feeling angsty.Yell

I did just add some Metallica.  Don't know why that didn't occur to me.  I did go older though, closer to And Justice and Master of Puppets...  Thanks!

FINALLY a workout song thread I can relate to! I'm with you on the synth and hip-hop stuff.  I have several of the songs mentioned above, so I'll try not to duplicate.

Some of my favs in my workout playlist:

C*m Feel the Noise -Quiet Riot

Ain't Goin Down Til the Sun Comes up - Garth

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor (who doesn't have that one?)

Hit me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar

Jump and Panama - Van Halen

Money for Nothing - Dire Straits

Mony Mony and Rebel Yell - Billy Idol

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

Centerfold - J Geils Band

Faith - George Michael

Whip It - Devo

Another One Bites the Dust - Queen

My love them but Embarassed to admit:  Wake me Up Before you Go-Go - Wham; a lot of Huey Lewis; U Can't Touch This  - MC Hammer; Footloose - Kenny Loggins; Little Red Corvette - Prince

Killer list.  I love the 80's.  Never be ashamed!  Haven't worked them into the playlist yet though.  I have some good ones in mind in addition to what you've got here though!

I love your 311 suggestion - great for moving.

What about The Cure? Just Like Heaven, Boys Don't Cry, Close to Me

Foo Fighters? Monkey Wrench, Everlong, Overdrive, My Hero

Blondie? One Way or Another, Call Me

And, I know you don't like hip-hop, but Jaydiohead.com has Jay-Z mixed with Radiohead free to download. It's awesome!

Another one that I have been loving lately is Talking Heads-Sop Making Sense. Great stuff.

Pixies is a good way to go.  I have "Gigantic" and "Debaser" on my workout list.

"Move on Back to Square" by Yes if you're feeling friendly.

Violent Femmes?

"Final Countdown" by Europe if it doesn't crack you up every time you hear it.

"Welcome to the Jungle", etc. Guns n Roses

Newer stuff:

Anything by Kings of Leon.  I haven't really listened to their newest album, but the rest of their stuff is great.

"Munich" by the Editors - presently, my favorite workout song.

The songs that get me through long grueling runs include:

Pantera: Cemetary Gates; Message in Blood; I'm Broken

Iron Maiden: Hallowed Be Thy Name; Dance of Death; The Nomad; Aces High

System of Down: All (mostly due to their armenian rhythm, good for running pace)

Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell; Sign of the Southern Cross; NIB; Snowblind; Fairies wear boots
Ozzy: Mr. Crowley; I Just Want You;

If you notice a trend, its that I try to stick with songs that are typically over 6 minutes, (exception for System), the longer songs help me with long runs.

Second person that has reccomended Kings of Leon.  I'll have to check them out!  And just added Violent Femmes.  Final Countdown, not sure about.  It was my favorite song in 6th grade, but I'm trying to limit my Europe intake...forever.

Didn't most of these songs accompany some kind of newsworthy teen murder suicide in their time?  Maybe I'm exaggerating...  I'm defintely down with the Sabbath and Maiden though.  I'll have to dig up some of my "tapes" to find them though.  My metal is a little rustly.  Heh.

Hmm, without knowing any specific incidents or articles off the top of my head, I would say that various genre's of metal may have contributed to a misguided teen making a bad decision. I.e. the whole Judas Priest subliminal message deal back in '90.

I for one, will never argue that many of these songs may stem from antitheism or the message sent may not be positive, but I still listen. In fact, as previously mentioned, I rely on many of these songs to get me through nasty runs.

I'll refrain from the names of songs, but when I lift weights, I typically listen to black metal: Kataklysm, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Abigail Williams, etc...

Make no mistake, the above mentioned could definitely be considered "bad juju" by most, but again, I enjoy the music.

I'm with you though, I'd have to dig them up, but I still have all my Pantera and Metallica tapes, hahah good times.
