If you do Dance Dance Revolution for about 30 minutes straight, then you sweat like a pig! Sounds gross but sweating is another way to lose weight. Its a really great exercise, and its going to help more as you do more advance dances. Good luck and have fun! Its one of the best ways to burn calories trust me I've been doing it almost every night for a year and a half. (Before that I didnt even touch the darn thing )
I have no idea for sure how many calories it burns, either. I sometimes log it as "general aerobics", because I'm not sure how else to estimate. But, it's a lot, because you're jumping up and down and sweating a bunch - I have to gulp down more water playing that game than any other exercise. It depends on your weight and how hard you play, but I'd probably assume at least 800 per hour. Just as a guess. The only way to know for sure would be to get one of those heart rate monitors, but that's not worth it for me - I just trust that I'm burning plenty!
I think light mode = 10 calories per song, standard mode = 15 calories per song, heavy mode = 20 calories per song is a pretty fair estimate.

How much does the thing cost?  I mean, how much money, exactly, will I have to plunk down for the entire apparatus, including everything I need?

What is the music like?  I hate retarded music.  Can I use my own music?

If you are getting it for a video game system, they usually have a "workout" mode. I think it takes into consideration all your stats and tells you how many calories you burn, depending on how well you do for each song.

I have seen games that allow you to use your own music before but have never tried one. As of 2 days ago I saw game and mat combos at best buy for about $40, but you would also need a consol and that cost a bit more.

The game will "count calories" for you as long as you put in your weight...however....it is a very high count.

I ddr...but I would never consider putting it down for activity.  I run and do step aerobics instead and then use ddr as a supplement....something fun I enjoy doing.

The home versions have workout mode which when you enter you weight tell you how many calories you burn.  The estimates someone else posted in here look about right.  The Wii version seems to be less of a workout than the PS2 versions.  Anyway for me and the songs/difficulty level I usually do I burn about 500 calories in 1 hour of dancing which takes 2 hours thanks to picking songs and the calculating and saving and all the game does.  This is about the same as the low impact aerobics activity on here.  I do mostly light mode on the PS2 and basic or difficult on the Wii.  Anyway, I don't like to exercise but DDR is fun so it's the only workout I will actually do.
a friend of mine started DDR as her workout routine because she hasn't worked out in a while and she loves it and says she's dropped about 8 lbs...

I'm wondering if using my polar f11 will help out with that.

I guess we'll find out. :)

My family bought the ddr pads that plug into your computers USB ports. That way we don't have to buy a gaming system. We got the nice metal pads though. Couple hundred dolars for 2 of them.

I have DDR Max, Max2, Extreme, Extreme2 and two metal pads for my ps2.  I used it as almost my sole form of exercise while I dieted when I was younger (I dropped about 60-70lbs).  I think it depends on how much you use it and the difficulty level.

I loved it, so I would play for several hours on heavy and drink looooots of water.  I would be exhausted afterward, and results showed quickly.  The main downside I've found with it is that it's hard on my knees and I get blisters on my feet.  Still worth it.  I get tired of most exercises easily--I can really only play DDR or run on the treadmill without being bored.

I love DDR! All the Japanese songs are awesome and really fast! Soccer and DDR are really the only exercises that are not boring for me! :D

There is a free PC version of the game called Stepmania. It is pretty good (at least one commercial arcaded game uses a modified version of this software.) It lets you create your own songs if you want.

A pad can be had for about $20 off the internet (get the PC/USB version of the pad.)

So if you want to give it a try, $20 bucks is all you are risking. Downlaod the software, load it on a PC, plug in the pad, and you're set to go.
