My friend is 60, female, obese, not diabetic and doesn't drink and has hemocromatosis. She's just been diagnosed with fatty-liver. We are both trying to lose weight. I said she should consult an RD.
Answer
For non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the diet therapy is a low calorie diet for weight loss, a reduced intake of simple sugars, saturated fats and alcohol (when applicable), and , more fiber in the form of vegetables and whole grains. If your friend wants to consult with registered dietitian, she can get a personalized meal plan based on her preferences and health goals, as well as education, support, accountability, and coordination of care with her doctor.
