Deadly Imported Foods From China - not just pet food

Quote  |  Reply
From the Washington Post National Weekly Edition:

In just 4 months, FDA inspectors refused 298 tainted food shipments from China.

Dried apples preserved with a cancer-causing chemical.  Frozen catfish laden with banned antibiotics.  Scallops and sardines coated with putrefying bacteria.  Mushrooms laced with illegal pesticides. These were among the 107 food imports from China that the Food and Drug Administration detained at U.S. ports just last month, agency documents reveal, along with more than 1,000 shipments of tainted Chinese dietary supplements, toxic Chinese cosmetics, and counterfeit Chinese medicines.

Sorry, unable to link to content, but did find this link on msnbc on the same topic.

#1 - thank goodness the FDA is at least keeping us safe from these dangers

#2 - is it a stretch to think that some tainted products are getting through and that purchasing food or supplements from China could be bad for your health ( or your life ) ?  The pet food problem is maybe just the tip of the iceberg.

i must just be a worry wart since no one else has thoughts about it, but since the only grocery store I have is wal mart and they get a LOT of stuff from china, this is bothering me....
Sorry, but you aren't just a worry wart.  The FDA is seriously underfunded and they don't have enough inspectors to catch all of this stuff.  They also don't have the best record in the world of enforcing it.  A little healthy paranoia sounds like a good idea to me.

It's a pain in the butt, but if you can get more food locally via farmers' markets and whatnot, it might give you more peace of mind, not to mention the warm fuzzies of being more environmentally sound.
we do have a produce stand near our house and they don't have that much right now - strawberries mostly and a few tomatoes - I will buy produce there this summer

and I'm thinking about buying the rest of my produce at earth fare 80 miles away when I go there anyway and bringing it home because they label the country of origin on everything and try to carry local produce

i think that's the best i can do, and just try to avoid stuff from china
I'm SO glad my gov' is so strict as to what it allows into the country!
