How can I deal with Emotional Eating?

Quote  |  Reply
I am a college student and tend to eat when bored, stressed or until Im so full. Thankfully, I have a VERY fast metabolism but want to lose about 8 pounds. Any suggestions on how to curb this? I thought about using a journal.. Thanks in advance

Take up something that keeps your hands busy like knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, cross stitch (you get the idea) and then you will do that instead of eat when you're feeling stressed or bored.
cc is a great distraction
Yes, those are all great distractions.  It's all about distraction.  I will add try researching techniques on changing how you feel without drugs.  Like chanting, or EFT, or even talking on the phone.

have veggies available to snack on,

also celery, carrots, etc make your jaw tired and then you cant eat anymore

you can eat a lot with almost no cals, and they are good for you

 i dont even count them

being a college student makes eatting to easy sometime, just keep food off the shelves at your house, or get a job/hobby that will take up time and burns calories

IE bars, restaurants, etc, your to busy to eat

Try to find ways to deal directly with emotions rather than try to feed them.  If you are bored, find something else to do.  It you are stressed, take a walk, meditate, or take a hot bath.
You don't have to be bored in college.  Participate in campus goings ons, and theres always a gym!  Gym's right there are awesome, but so many people don't use it.  In between class don't go home, go to the gym or jog:)

I just finished college, and was the exact same with the emotional eating - which is why I need to lose 20 lbs now...

If I were to do things over again, I would always have fruits and veggies available to snack on (cut up, washed and ready), and I would keep a food journal, just because it makes you think about what you're eating instead of doing it mindlessly.  Also, join an intermural team.  I didn't do this until my last year of school, and I ended up meeting the coolest people, and had tons of fun.  Plus, as an added bonus, you burn calories without thinking about it.  Also, it helped me to study at school so you don't have access to your refrigerator.  Bring healthy snacks with you to munch on while you study.

 Good luck with your degree!

Personally, whenever I go to eat something I'm not supposed to, I grab some gum. Especially if I'm just eating out of boredom.
If it really is emotional eating...why not deal with your emotions?

When folks talk about distracting yourself or chewing gum or whatever, those are bandaids. If you've got some kind of problem that is a recurring problem, you need to deal with the heart of the problem. I think that's why so many dieters gain back their weight. They haven't dealt with the root of their overeating problems. Therapy might help and yes, journalling should help, as long as you're dealing with the problem and not just accommodating the behavior.
