How to deal with morning sickness.

Quote  |  Reply
Ugh, I have been feeling so nauseated.  Just all the time, mostly in the morning.  Especially when I first get up.  One of the main reasons is because I haven't been able to sleep since finding out I am pregnant, and that was more than 2 weeks ago.  I have been getting around 5 hours a night when I am the kind of person who likes to get 8 to 9 hours a night.  For the sickness I have found a few things to help, like  mint tea, eating low fat foods every 2 hours, but what else can I do?  Any suggestions?

Also do you have any suggestions about sleeping problems.  I go to bed at around 9, wake up at 1 and can't go back to sleep.  I get up, clean the apartment, read a book, just don't turn on the TV.

Morning, Well first off for the morning sickness you can also try crackers or bread. It kinda doesn't matter what you do your body is adjusting to growing a baby. I found that staying away from the higher fat helped. I also went to see a doctor about my sleeping when I was pregnant and he told me to take a gravel(motion sickness) pill. He said it was safe for the baby and at the same time had a sleeping effect on pregnant woman and children. Other than that I tried to take a nice warm bath after taking the pill and when I was ready for bed it worked. Good luck and I hope this helps....

Ginger ale and saltines worked for me.

Sorry to hear about the adjustment - but it gets better!  Wink

Eating helps. I had hypermensis & was sick my entire pregnancy. I took Zofran. I also carried around peppermint oil & put it on my temples when I felt ill. Some people use motion sickness bracelets. I don't know how severe you are feeling, but if you can't function you should consult your doctor. Otherwise it will probably let up.

You must get a full night of sleep. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Lack of sleep is #1 cause of depression & psychosis in pregnancy & postpartum. It's very serious.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Hi there, I had morning sickness pretty bad for my second pregnancy. What I found helped was keeping some water and soda crackers (saltines) by your bedside, eat some and sip the water before you get up. Sometimes it seemed to help, I also bought some "Sea Bands" you can get them at any drug store, their for motion/sea sickness, the elastic/button put pressure on a certain pressure point (can't remember name?) the stops the feeling. I woun't recommend gravol, just don't like the idea of taking meds while pregger unless I needed to, good night sleep and mint/peppermint tea is good though. Here's a link for those sea band, I swear by them, it made me feel better within a couple of hours. Good Luck, hopfully it will only last a few weeks

Congrats on the pregnancy.   I wish I had a decisive cure,  but I don't.  All I can say is that with all five if my pregnancies,  I was sick for a good four months.   Nothing worked and each one had it's own triggers for the sickness.  It was so bad sometimes that I didn't think I would make it through it,  however,  I did, and I have five beautiful children.  On another positive,  I also had four miscarraiges,  and only with one of them did I even have morning sickness,  so I always looked at the sickness as a positive in knowing the baby was okay.   I did eat anything I wanted.  Sometimes it was something unhealthy,  but if I got it down and kept it down I could often follow with something a little more nutrient dense.   If I had a craving for bacon,  I had it,  and then tried to get down a banana or some grapes.  A few times I really think my body was craving protien,  so though I wouldn't think I could eat a steak,  after I started,  my body settled down and I actually could enjoy it.  I learned to try and keep eating little amounts through the day and if I threw them up,  I was hopeful that some of it was staying down.   Lastly,  I have a juicer,  and I tried to juice nutritious carrot/veggie juices mixed with apple because they digest quickly.  I watered them down so as not to shock my system and I drank them slowly. Adding a piece of ginger sometimes helped and sometimes didn't,  but ginger is supposed to be good for calming the stomach.   Good Luck

Wow does this bring back some fond memories.  Dry heaving every morning in the shower.  Throwing up every morning before the morning meeting (which my loving husband attended and got the other all-male attendees laughing at me).  Throwing up at the smell of the cafeteria that my office was across from.  But, like someone else said - I got a beautiful baby boy and was never happier to throw up.  I tell him and his little brother how happy I was to be sick all the time because they are the product.  Also like the other post - I lost one and was never sick with him/her.  So for the third baby (my second son) the nine month long heartburn and nusea was very reassuring.  It sounds sick but I felt better.

Some solutions I had was the sea bands for nusea.  Anything with ginger in them - ginger ale, ginger snaps, ginger bread.  Sprite or any other lemon flavored drink like lemonade.  I think the lemonade felt better than ginger stuff.  Eat bland things.  Just the smells of anything spicy set me off.   Ask your doctor if all the sugarless crap that's on the market is okay for the baby.  Giving yourself a 9 month reprieve from dieting with those foods might be better for you both - if you use them now.  As for sleep, try a relaxing CD.  I got a set of weightloss hypnosis tapes - yes, I am desperate to lose weight.  The only thing the worthless stuff does is put me right to sleep.  Sounds of the ocean- that sort of thing and then focus only on your breathing.  Good luck - catch up on sleep now while you can.

You had so many replies I did not read to see what everyone said BUT Saltine Crackers work wonders for morning sickness. and brushing your teeth also. Turned out all the yuck in your mouth makes it horrible. I kept a pack of crackers IN BED with me and ate one as soon as I opened my eyes! lol
