How To Deal With Mean Numbers

Quote  |  Reply

I don't know why - odd numbers always bothered me.  I assigned numbers 1-9 personalities in grade school, and the odd ones were always mean.  Before I learned about odd and even numbers.

Edited to change title for compatability with the spirit of the lounge.

See, now I disagree.  Even numbers seem so damn perky and cheerful.  I can't stand that. I like my pessimistic, moody odd numbers.

9 is just downright evil.  I think 2 is my favorite number.

OMG! I thought I was the only one who did this... I totally agree about 9... I don't know what it is?!

Now I'm symmetrical by nature - I like things even, so I prefer odd numbers.  Take nine for example, you've got 5 right there in the middle, with 1-2-3-4 on one side and 6-7-8-9 on the other side.  Perfectly balanced without resorting to fractions.

Fractions are the devil.

7 has always seemed so cheerful to me, I just can't really see it as evil....though I suppose people could because you know (7 - 8 -9....7 ate 9)

I wonder what would be produced by breading 9 with Q

How can you hate 3 and 5?  3 is such a pathetic little waif and 5 is a little scrapper.

ooooooooone is the loneliest number....ooooooooh

i definitely prefer even numbers.  but i'm a little neurotic.

I always take numbers, especially long number like on liscence plates and see if they're divisible by 3.

I like 3. It's always been my favorite number.

i also like numbers.

for example: there is building that is at 1235 *insert street name*

i like that.

because 1+2 = 3.  2+3 = 5.

are you serious?!?!?!  I would hate that.  1+2+3=/=5 :(

I love it when the clock strikes 12:51

I'm a lover of 7....seven is good

someone took the thread a little more seriously than i did...

and yep, hotfuss, i love when i can find mathmatical patterns in numbers.  :)

The mean is just the average of the numbers.

It is easy to calculate: Just add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.

In other words it is the sum divided by the count.

Example 1:

What is the Mean of these numbers?

6, 11, 7

Add the numbers: 6 + 11 + 7 = 24

Divide by how manynumbers (ie we added 3 numbers): 24 ÷ 3 = 8

..

Yes, but how do we deal with them??  Are we to assume they are a fair representation of their group of numbers?  Or would it be more PC to go by something like a median??  I mean, 8 isn't even in the group of 6, 11, 7, and it is nothing like 11. Talk about misrepresentation!

I'm personally a fan of prime numbers, since they're always prepared and they are excellent!

.. in bed. ;)

i don't like 7.  it's all pointy and sharp.  and i don't like 8: too perfect and symmetrical and pretentious.

i love 9.  don't really know why.

3 is okay.  not all there, but open and honest about it.

incidentally, do any of you people have synesthesia?  i don't, but i think a lot of people who do have strong feelings about numbers and letters (and words).

I am a fan of 9, personally. It does so many magical things.
