I just found out that I'm pregnant. I also work and go to graduate school. And I was a coffee junkie. That's been the hardest for me. So I switched to decaf, mostly because it's not just the caffeine that I wanted, but the taste of the coffee.
So is decaf okay? I'm one of those hipppie types that buys organic, only water-process decaf (not the chemical way). I know there's still a wee bit of caffeine in there, but after my afternoon nap (which I now need, and didn't before) I'm so out of it that I have to have my fake coffee. And in the morning, and in the midmorning... I guess I'm drinking about three cups of decaf a day. That's less than I used to have!
Also, I haven't had any morning sickness yet. What's up with that? I'm only about three weeks along.
Thoughts?
Drinking decaf should be fine. I actually drank caffeine all through my pregnancies (my doc said it was fine in moderation) and my kids turned out just fine. BTW-Congrats!
I never had real major morning sickness with mine, some people just get it more than others. Not anything to worry about, but it might still be coming, so be prepared!
nboes - that's good to know. About the morning sickness, I mean. I shouldn't do this, but I can't stop doing google searches about pregnancy. Too much information out there, and of course, it's the scary stuff that pops out at me. I read that no morning sickness means a higher risk of miscarriage, and then I read that lots of women don't have morning sickness... I just freak myself out. I'm waiting until that 10 week mark and then will breathe a sigh of relief. Even though we didn't plan this, I would be devastated if anything happened.
I'm not a coffee drinker, so I can't help you there. I just wanted to say that I never had morning sickness with either of my pregnancies, so maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones and not have it either. ![]()
doglady-ironically, my one pregnancy that I really had some morning sickness, was the one I miscarried. So just the opposite for me. The two that stuck, I really never got sick. I really don't think there is a correlation between morning sickness and miscarriage, but I guess only my experiences to go by.
Don't believe everything you read. Every pregnancy is different... even for a woman who has had multiple pregnancies. It's hard to not get scared when you read negative things and have them apply to you but I have never heard such a horrible thing... no morning sickness = miscarriage, that's just silly!
Also, caffeine is fine, up to 300mg per day... so rather than go thru those horrible caffeine withdrawl sideeffects... drink a regular cup in the a.m. to keep you moving! One cup doesn't contain that much caffeine (depending on how strong you fix it).
Congratulations!!!!

Caffiene is okay in pregnancy, in small amounts. A cup a day is about right. If you want 2, try making it half-caff. Just make sure you are consuming plenty of water to help flush your system out daily.
Coffee actually is known to have some health benefits in small doses.
I personally was a random coffee drinker before pregnant, but in the first trimester I was extremely sensitive to the caffiene. It made me super jittery after a half cup and I would feel kinda nauseus. I had to stop drinking it. Now in the third trimester, I've had about 2 lattes since then and my body was okay with them and I occasionally have a small cup of (hippie organic coffee LOL!) when I need it. Listen to your body.

I wanted to add that iVillage is also great. Go to the boards for the women due the same month as you. I have met so many great people. I love sharing and reading about all the trials and triumphs. Lately, it's all about births in my month!!!! Only 19 days left for me...but probably not. ![]()
Good luck!
Well, i read that you like organic, so this my not help. Folgers has a 1/2 caf version of coffee, and I swore by it during my last pregnancy!
First pregnancy: not one day of morning sickness=big healthy baby
Second pregnancy: 5 months of wretched nausea= extreamly big healthy baby!
Congrats, BTW
I can't help you on the coffee thing because I just quit it cold turkey when I found out I was prego... but I wanted to tell you that my "morning sickness" (actually it's ALL FREAKING DAY SICKNESS for me) kicked in at around 5-6 weeks and is starting to dissipate now at just over 11 weeks. If you do get it, take your prenatal vitamin at night before bed, it helps a lot.
I'm a coffee junkie too. Plus a parent, full time teacher, and grad student, so I totally sympathize. Decaf just sucks! Not to mention the intense caffeine withdrawal! I gave it all up the day I found out I was pregnant with #2, and had a craptastic month. No puking, but rotten headaches and no appetite. At my first appointment, my doctor told me a cup or 2 of coffee a day was fine - and I hadn't even asked her about it ... she must be psychic
I told her I had gone cold turkey and she said I was tougher than she was (she's got 4 kids with 1 on the way) so I decided to take her advice.
I have 1-2 cups a day, depending on what I've got going on and how I feel - some days I don't have any. I'll spread it out - I had half a cup this morning, mixed with decaf. Maybe a small cup tonight, since my husband and I are having a date night, and I'll probably need to stay awake later than my typical 9 pm ![]()
I def. feel better with a tad bit of caffeine when I need it - fewer headaches, less fatigue. Of course, talk to your doctor! And good luck!!!
