How did you decide your target weight?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm just curious how you all decided your target weight? Did you pick a point on the BMI calculator or just a round figure? Maybe a weight you used to be if you have/had an eating disorder? Just wondering as I plan on another 15lbs but that is purely because it would be a round figure (14 stone). Thanks.

Firstly, you need to reach a BMI of 20. From that point, a professional will advise you on a suitable goal.

Once you reach a BMI of 20, you need to discuss your final goal with a professional - an expert who will consider things, including your body type, and your previous weights, among other things. With the appropriate information, they will come up with a good weight for you to aim for.

You also need to work with them, because you may still not feel comfortable once you reach the weight which they recommend; you may feel that you still lack energy and decide to gain more.

Remember, you should get an experts advice when determining your final goal weight; none of your family, friends, or people on this website can give you proper advice.

I've based my goal on a healthy BMI.  For my height I will be "healthy" at 140,  I figure once I hit that I can revaluate and see if I want to lose more for appearance, but the goal is really being healthy for me.

At first I went for a BMI of 20. However, I hung around at that weight for a while and my period did not return, so I decided to gain some more weight until that happened (at a BMI of 21). Then I went on different medications and my BMI crept up to 22-23 for a while. When I came off the medications, my BMI slowly dipped again and is now usually between 20 and 21, without restricting or counting calories.

I'm actually glad my weight went higher than the healthy minimum. It was a good lesson that a BMI higher than 20 is still healthy, not overweight, and that nothing terrible happened to me because of it. It didn't happen to be the weight my body naturally settled at, but it was still a good experience for me.

me and my theapist have agreed i shall reach a bmi of 20 and see where i go from there , perhaps stay there for a few weeks to if i havnt already see if my periods return i am preparing myself that i may need to be higher h x

When I reach my target weight my BMI will be 24.5 so at the higher end of the scale but I still think I look skinny now so hoping in 15 lbs time I will look better.

i worked with my doctor who looked at my growth charts and past bmi to help me decide my goal weight.  since ive been in the 25 percentile weight for my height my entire life and had a bmi of about 18.5 she decided that that is my bodies natural weight and what it's comfortable with. so im 5'6'' and my goal weight is 115. do know that im a rare exception and most people who are 5'6'' their bodies require more weight to function properally.

My doctor & my mum decided that a bmi of 20 was best for now [I'm 15 y.o] but because I'm still growing its hard to really tell. Before my ed- two years ago- I was an inch shorter and had a bmi of around 18.5. So I've never been close to this weight before.

But I've only had one period in about four and a half months, and I'm really hoping that I won't have to gain more to get it back properly. My doctor said that it often takes a while to get it regular again when you haven't had it in so long [about a year].

Everyone is different. There are ranges for your height so look at that and it will depend on how your body functions to where you fall. So focus on what your body needs to be healthy mind/body.

abbies right we ll need to accept that the weight we want to be might not  be the right weight for our bodies to be healthy .for me maintaining a low bmi means i still havnt challengd the ed enough , i want to be get past this stage , while ever you are wanting your weight to be lower than it wants to be the ed will never be far away h x

If I eat a normal healthy diet then my BMI drops to about 20 so it is a struggle keeping it as high as I want it.
