How do I decline food at a guest's house?
Asked by jegvlf3 on Mar 15, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

When I visit my in-laws, I always feel rude not eating what they serve, but many times it is food I can't eat because of my prediabetes. Also, I eat every three hours normally and they eat large meals spaced out. Breakfast is at at 9 and lunch is at 2.

Answer

You can refuse food without being rude.  For people in your inner circle (vs. casual acquaintances), honesty is the best policy.  At sometime other than at a meal, sit down with your in-laws and explain that you have pre-diabetes. Your doctor said to eat six small meals a day and to avoid X, Y and Z.  Explain that you don’t need “special food” because there’s nothing that you can't eat per se.  And then at meal time, pick around the refined carbohydrates, sugar and greasy food, and a serve yourself a small portion or leave much of a large portion on your plate.  Read 6 Ways to Say No to Food Pushers from the Guide to Weight Loss at About.com
