i just got a hoop, and am wondering the same. i havent been logging it as i consider it extra activity...i think there might be a potentially wide range based on how much hulaing you put into your hooping... ;)
i got a 3-lb hoop. i noticed that it takes minimal effort to keep it hooping, but its alot more fun if a put alot more gyration into it. good question.

Wow. A hula hoop could be just what I'm looking for, although I'm over weight my stomach is pretty flat and I've been doing some crunches but they just end up leaving me feeling a bit sick afterwards. Would hulaing have the same effect on abs as doing crunches do you think?
Awesome, thanks for replying honeyspark. You've sold it to me :D *toddles off to ebay to purchase a funky hoop*
This is very interesting. I think it's good to look for ways to make execise time more fun. Is it hard to learn to hula? I remember in my younger days, I could not get the hang of it.
Thanks for the encouragement, honeyspark. I think I will look for a hoop this weekend.
I have a family gathering this weekend, hopefully someone there can teach me. I think anything that gets a person to use their muscles is a good thing!!!

nubiker, did anyone take pictures of you learning how to hoop? If so, I wanna see them! :-D
You guys inspired me. I ordered a hoop off of ebay. I got a 3lb one and hope it gets here soon. I'm thinking this is going to be a lot of fun. I've been looking for something that I could do for my abs that wouldn't require crunches on the floor. I'm really looking forward to trying this.
Actually, I hoop...its hula hooping but with dancing and tricks and stuff and its really fun and it does a lot like everyone else has said, but instead of going and buying one that can be expensive you can make one! and its really simple I made mine by buying some tubing that can be founds at home depot or supply store that is 160psi and these little connectors, then you make a hoop that is between the middle of chest and belly button and cut it off, the bigger it is the slower making you work harder, then with a hair dryer or boiling water just connect the ends and tape it with color duct tape and to add weight to it to make it harder just either put a cup or two of water, you can also use sand or beads for noise. Anyway go to http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html to see the actually directions, but hooping.org is a great place to learn about hooping, you can watch videos to learn tricks and see what hooping is about and the things people can do with them, also you can find links to get videos that teaches how to learn everything
OK athena, I wll get back to you!!! Take care.
I started hooping, just because I am always trying to find something that's FUN and doesn't always feel like exercise.
I can tell you, I just got my hoop in the mail, and within 5 minutes I'm sweaty already. I'll continue to let you know how it goes fitness-wise.

We once saw some professional hoopers perform... and they allowed us to try out their weighted hoops. Omg... just 5 minutes was an amazing workout.
Just incase anyone is thinking about making hoops or buying hoops, The more a hoop weighs doesn't mean you'll lose more weight. It's the energy to keep the hoop rotating that contributes to weight loss. Actually a lighter hoop will make you have to expend more energy which burns more calories.
Professional hooper's hoops are heavier then childrens, because they are adult sized. :)
I can tell you mine only weighs 1 lb 8.5 ounces, and its hard to keep it going. ^^
Here is link about weighted hoops etc.
