Has anyone ever been on depo provera? I am coming off of it after 2+ yrs and I have no idea what will happen when I do come off of it. Has anyone experienced this?

I was on depo for about 6 years, but when I stopped I switched to nuvaring because I wanted to know when to expect my period.  I was only on nuvaring for three months before I had to stop and after that I was totally regular (got my period every 28 days).  Good luck!

I was on it 6 years, but switched straight to Mirena, the 5 year IUC (due to losing insurance, I couldn't afford the Depo shots 4x a year).  I lost my periods on Depo, and they have stayed gone since switching to Mirena, but from what I understand that's a little unusual (not that I'm complaining!!!)

I'm on mirena now too (after 6 years of depo) and I don't have my period either (well not really, I have one day of super light spotting that only shows up on TP that I suppose could technically be a period - sorry for TMI!)

Ok...I just got off of Depo about a month ago. Mind you, we're all different so I'm not sure if we'll experience the same things. Let me also say that my first few shots went very well. No adverse side effects. But then, right after my 3rd shot, I spotted more than just a little every day until I got my 4th shot. Everything was great for those 3 months. The time came to get the 5th shot and  I declined to get it. Here's how it's going now....

I've spotted again every day. I'm going on a month now and it's frustrating but I eventually want to have kids and I was worried about it taking so long to get my fertility back by the time I'm ready. If this doesn't stop in another month, I'm going to my dr.

P.S. Have you tried the Sponge? It's back on the market. It works really good but my problem with it was that you have to leave it in for hours after intercourse and by then I'm sleeping. Anyway, everytime I ended up with a UTI. I can't wait to have kids and then my hubby can get snipped

Hi! I've been on Depo for 8+ years now, but have been thinking of using something else as well...I wonder if my moodiness and difficulty in losing weight have anything to do with the shot?! I love the convenience of it, and (besides suspicions about the moods/weight) I have never had any problems with it..

Anyway-sorry this is no help, but I'm also interested to hear other ladies stories/experiences of coming off the shot after using if for a good period of time!

I was only on Depo for about 6 months (two shots), but I've been off it since december and still haven't gotten my period back. I think my hormones are all outta whack. :(

I was on depo for almost two years and had my last shot at the beginning of March, so I guess technically I've been off it since early June. I haven't had my period since I've been on depo and it didn't come back right away. I went to the dr at the end of July for my annual gyno checkup and told her I hadn't gotten a period yet again. She told me that if I hadn't gotten one again to give her a call in Sept and she'd prescribe some hormones (basically BC pills) to kinda kickstart it back up. Anyways, last week I got my period again... wasn't as... much.. as before, kinda just heavy spotting, but its a start. Coming off the shot... my hubby says I'm less moody and happier, but that also may have something to do with the fact that I got married in May and moved into a house with just my hubby (we had roommates before) so tons of stress has now left my life. I was kinda hoping to lose some weight easier after getting off the depo... but it hasnt just fallen off like hoped :)

Oooo.  Depo!  I'm not a fan.  I went on the shot for ~2years, gained weight, and lost any bit of a sex drive.  Furthermore, I do HIV research and can only hint at the havoc Depo does to the reproductive tract epithelium...  Mind you, it's in monkeys but humans really are not that far apart (put it this way:  They give monkeys a dose of Depo in order to increase HIV/SIV acquisition!)

But not the point...  When I got off depo I noticed that after a couple of months I had less moodiness (mind you, I really wasn't very moody to begin with), increased sex drive, AND I started to slowly lose the weight that I had gained from the shot (with a proper, nutritious diet included of course).  It took about 4 months for my cycle to come back as well.

Hope this helped!

I quit after the first 3 months.  I heard more than 2 years use was bad for your bones, so I was also taking calcium supplements.  Also, depo provera is the birth control most associated with weight gain. I lost maybe 3 pounds when coming off it.

I used it for a while, and when I went off it I had a period for three months straight, then no period for something like a year.  I had to go back on pills to set it right.  Depo is not something I would recommend.

Okay, now, see? this is exactly the kinds of things I need to hear. I have a million reasons for going off of it, such as....

1. I have gained a lot of weight. There are other factors involved in this as well, but...

2. I've had a ridiculously difficult time losing weight and I've been working my ass off.

3. I broke a lot of bones last year and I'm afraid that the calcium depletion is negatively effecting the healing process.

4. I'm not even sexually active right now. Partly because-

5. No sex drive at all. None.

So technically, I've been off of it for almost a month. I took the last shot in early May. No changes yet. I really really did like not getting a period. Of course. That was awesome. But I really do think it's time to move on without depo. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for the replies.

Thanks for posting this, I am too getting off depo this month. I also have mirena inserted ( the worst cramping of my life after insertion, even worse than the labor I had with my daughter). My Dr. assured me that over lapping the two was fine for the last month. He also told me that I prob would not have a period b/c of this. I did not gain weight for the first 1 1/2 yr while on Depo but close to the second year I ballooned so I am hoping that coming off of it will help rid the weight. I am glad to also hear that I was not the only one with a low sex drive, this explains alot. YAY, for the hope in a normal sex life!

Yeah... When I say it killed my sex drive I mean IT KILLED my sex drive.  No worries though.  In a couple of months all should be well again! i think it took longer to get my cycle back than it did anything else.
Killed my sex drive also..

You all are saying it decreased your sex drive, it actually increased mine. Weird side effect I know.

Anyway a few years back I got off of the depo after having been on it for a year 1/2 and I bled for 3 months. Spotting, but it was still annoying as hell.

They DO make a low dose depo now (which is the one I'm on) because the original one made me so irritable and bitchy all the time. This one is not so much. Maybe a little edgy at times, but not bad.

So you may get the bleeding.

I REALLY hate to throw this in here, but does anyone else lactate while on the depo? It happened the first time, and it's happening again this time around. I can actually stimulate milk, or a milky substance, from my nipple. Too embarrassed to ask a doctor and haven't found anything online. I guess it's the hormones :)

hey, star, yeah, I actually have heard that. though it didn't happen to me. I'd definitely ask your doctor about it though, because I'm not sure if that's okay or not. I know nothing about it, but it has to be hormone related.

can anyone tell me if weight was easy to lose after getting off depo, with exercise and healthy diet. i already took my last one cause after being on it for 2 years, about 6 months ago, i became moody and gained weight(not an extreme amount but i used to always be a 5, now i'm a 9)i dont know what will happen if i get off but i"ve taken it late before, and it throw my whole body out of wack. so good luck to anyone else.

i was on depo for 4 years,  i had no problems with it,  and did not mind not having my period for 4 years,  i felt better coming off it,  but i did not gain anyweight on it and i dont know if my psy issues were effected by it but i always suffered from depression and high anxiety.  but i would recomend it for people who are not mature enough to remember to take the pill same time every day,  i was not able to at that pt in my life but now i can so i have normal b control
