depo-provera weight question

Quote  |  Reply
This is for the women out there -

I've been on Depo-Provera (birth control shot) for years now. Yesterday was my three month shot - it was also the worst binge day I've had since I started calorie counting.

Could that injection of hormones be related to my out of control eating? Does anyone out there take depo, and if so have you had the same weird problem?

I have been on depo since I was 16 years old (I'm now 24).  I did take a year break when I was 22, and lost about 15 pounds of the 25 I had gained previously.  Since going back on it, I have RAPIDLY gained weight this time.  I went from 132 lbs in February 2008 to 154 lbs currently!  I'm going to get off of it this month, because something crazy is obviously going on this time.  I eat very well (usually under 1300 calories per day), lots of veggies, lean meats, and almost no snacks.  I don't exercise as much as I'd like, but I am moderately active at work and home.  It just seems impossible to prevent the weight from coming, and I feel like I have no way to stop it.  Even my friends are shocked because they know I am so health conscious but the weight is just piling on.

Any suggestions besides switching?

I've also experienced a lot of depression (partly due to my weight gain), migraine headaches, and a complete lack of sex drive.  Has anyone tried the Nuva Ring?  Do you feel your symptoms going away?

Wow this is pretty scary stuff...

I actually just got the depo shot for the first time a couple weeks ago.

About a year ago I used to be anorexic status.. then I started binging out a lot and over the past 6 months I gained 25 pounds (WOAH!)

If I took the depo shot half a year ago, I would have totally blamed my weight gain on that. Hahaha...

But in reality.. it's not the shot that's making people fat. It's the overeating... which actually affects 66% of America

Maybe being on the depo increases your appetite though? My doc told me that I'm gaurunteed to gain at least 5 pounds a year while on the shot..which I'm TOTALLY determined to overcome!!

Cry  I AM DESPERATE!!!!!!!!!!!   Stopped depo-provera because of the risk of bone loss...  I weighed 100lbs when on it and after I stopped it, gained 30lbs in 3 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What should I do now? Go back?  When will I stop gaining weight?  I lose weight very quickly normally and am very petite, no fat in the body.  Now I have fat everywhere, I just can't believe it! I am trying to loose weight for 2 months now and I believe I've lost, so far, 2 pounds!!! Before, without even noticing, I would lose weight...  Have anyone experienced this?  STOPPING DEPO AND GAINING WEIGHT?

Oh, who knows all what we do to our bodies when we fiddle with our hormones!  I think everyone is different.

I have been on Depo since I was 16, 9 years ago, with a few breaks of less than a year.  I had my bone density tested last year, and it was quite low for my age group, but nothing to really worry about.  I take calcium, I do weight bearing exercise at least 5 days a week...

I loved depo.  Never any notable weight gain, no periods for almost 10 years, and the only side effect was loss of libido/pain with sex.  Between that and the bone, loss, though, I decided to give it up.  10 days ago I got the implanon implant.  So far I hate it...but the jury is still out.  I've got 3 years to decide how I feel about it.

So, back to what I was saying originally...messing with your hormones can affect you in unique ways that others don't experience and in way you might not expect.  Weight gain is one known effect of Depo (and all other hormonal birth control)...but whether you will experience it is a coin toss.  I never did.  The only thing that has made me gain ever is being a lazy pig.

Pumpkin, I gained weight only AFTER I STOPPED TAKING DEPO!!! While I was on it, I was pretty thin, 30 lbs thinner, 3 months ago.  Understand?  Now I don't know if I should go back, I'm scared of gaining and gaining...

Ahhh I'm in the same boat as you. I love the depo but hate the lower libido and the bone loss. I also want to try the implanon implant but I'm scared of having something foreign sitting in my arm.

May I ask why you hate it?

I've had this thread tagged for awhile. I like to check back on it every now and then, because I have recently come off of the shot as well - mostly because of the weight gain and no sex drive. I'm waiting until I get my periods back to go on anything else (and I think I have decided on mirena). So, anyway...I had my last shot in MAY. The first week of may. So EIGHT months ago. Still no sign of a period. Not even any spotting. I have had breast pain off and on and I even get some cramping and mood swings every now and then. I called my OBGYN about it and she basically said to wait it out for a year!! But I have gained so much weight from being on the shot and it has been next to impossible to lose it. I gained over 30 pounds and I wasn't that thin to begin with. Since February, TEN MONTHS, I have been exercising - hard core - cardio, interval training and weight training 5 days a week and have been counting calories - keeping a deficit between 500 and 1000 a day. I have lost 20 pounds. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for that 20 pound loss, but that averages out to about 2 pounds a month when it should have been closer to 8. I should've lost 4 times that much weight by now. I would've reached my goal weight forever ago if it weren't for that damn shot. So now, I'm just ... I'm frustrated. It comes in waves. Some days, I feel very patient and can easily tell myself that once this crap is out of my system, I'll start losing more quickly, but other days, I just get really ANGRY about it!!! So, I just wanted to share. Thanks for letting me.

Has anyone gained weight on the depo shot the first 3 months, because im getting my 1st shot 2morrow and im terrified

i am slim and i have been on depo for a month now do anyone think i will gain any weight

I really should have researched before starting the shot. I just got my first one this morning.

I need a birth control that doesn't make me gain weight and doesn't kill my sex drive.  Those are my only two requirements.

I can't do an IUD--I knew someone that died from having one in, and now I'm super-paranoid about them.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions?

I'm praying that I'm one of those rare people who doesn't gain weight while getting the shot.  I suppose I'll just wait three months and see what happens. If I gain, I just won't get it anymore.  But I better not gain; I just lost a bit of weight and I'm really proud of that. If I gain I'll be soooo mad.

ive also experienced quite a bit of weight gain.  im considering switching to lybrel.  it's a daily pill that lets you skip your period.

I used to weigh 110, now i weigh 152.  I've been on the depo for about 5 years.  I used to be more active, which attributes to some of it, but being so hormonal all the time makes me feel crappy and tired.

according to the medication insert, it says that on average, a woman with a starting weight of 136 gained an average of 5.4 pounds within the first year, 8.1 pounds within two years, 13.8 pounds within three years, and 16.5 pounds within six years.

I can tell you that I wonder if it has been my problem. Right before we had our daugther, who is now 13 months old, I was pregnant with sextuptlets. We lost them at 6 months, and almost immediately got pregnant again. While pregnant with her, I was constantly losing weight... which didn't concern my doc too much because he knew I had it to lose - after all, I had been eating for 7 before her - and he knew I was making sure to stay healthy because we didn't want to lose another. I was 7 months pregnant with her before I ever gained a pound. In the 1 1/2 weeks before I had her to the 3 weeks after I had her, I lost over 40 pounds... of course, some of that is baby weight. But I was down below where I had started with the 6. We immediately got on the depo to make sure we wouldn't get pregnant again and give my body a break.

In the year since I started taking it, I've gained over 80 POUNDS! No one I know of would like that one. With a HYPERthryoid, no less. The docs have been scratching their heads over it, not understanding how I could gain that much weight with a medical condition that makes you lose it. I've mentioned the depo to them, but they said that it would not be the cause of it. HOWEVER, I went to my OBGYN today for my yearly exam - FUN - and mentioned this all to her. She told me that the average is 10 pounds in 5 years, but that some women can gain drastically with it. I guess I'm one of them because there is really no other reason.

I stay active, I have a toddler to chase, I eat right - but I will say that I did experience the binge thing right after having the shot as well - and the only other thing they could think of was metabolism changing - I'm sorry, but I'm not that old. We're right now re-evaluating our method... She mentioned Mirena, and I'm currently checking into it, but I've heard women complaining of weight gain with that as well. Don't need it.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is there something out there that you ABSOLUTELY don't gain weight with?

I started Depo 2 weeks ago... I researched it before I started and understood that I would probably gain weight (Im naturally pretty thin, 5'7 and 128 lbs before the shot), so I changed my eating habits and got a gym membership. I incorporated working out into my daily routine and go to exercise classes often.  I've started to count calories and avoid cravings by drinking decaf coffee with low calorie sweetener (the first day after the shot was the worst!!).. And good news!!  IVE LOST 4 LBS!!  I think the reason Ive had a successful experience with Depo is that I control my cravings and don't binge.  I'm burning more than 2x the calories that I eat in a day by working out as often as I can...

Does anyone know how long it takes for someone to be on Depo before they start gaining?  I have had no problems yet, but am super paranoid about gaining in the future!

Good Luck to anyone who uses this. I was 5'6" and 123lbs and 27yrs old when I began. Here is what happened to me.

See above start point. Got the shot. 3 months later went in and had gained 21 lbs. EEK! Ok, well I knew I'd gain some but was expecting 5-10lbs at most. Must not have been paying attention to eating. Got another shot. 3 months later +26lbs. Ok, well, I quit smoking during this period, so that must have been the cause for it. Got another shot. 3 months later +21lbs. Had to be the shot. had eaten Lean Cusines, exercised, was more active than before I went on it. So, almost 70lbs it took me to learn not to ever take this again. My body has not been the same since. I never had weight issues before. The biggest weight fluctuations were during my period and totalled 3-5lbs that would be gone after my period. I did not have any periods while on it (which was in fact the big selling point. that part worked!) Unfortunately, after I went off it, I had serious problems with periods. I went to the hospital twice because of cramps. It seems I would have the period, but the lining was so tough from not having them, that it couldn't release like it should, so it was just building pressure. I ended up have to have a DNC to try and fix it. They are to this day not regular like before the shots. If I do not take the pill, who knows when or what duration I will have. Even with the pill, they are still not right as far as color or flow.   I do NOT reccommend this for anyone. EVER!

I've lost 20 pounds while on depo.  I have no doubt that if I wasn't on it, I would have lost more by now, but whatever.
