desk job...leads to eating I swear
So I'm in an office the majority of the day for my job and I swear I get hungry from sitting here. I work out usually in the morning and have a shake or a bowl of cereal then come to work and have a little morning snack and then I swear I just feel hungry throughout the day.
I think it's because I'm just sitting that my mind wanders to food, but it's really annoying because I know if I was out being active it wouldn't be a problem.
Anyone else have similar problem with desk job and fooood?? any suggestions? Thanks!
I find that when I am bored or not busy enough I tend to think about food and eating, but when I am run off my feet at work the day flies by and I am often below my calorie target when I leave the office.
I handle this by allowing myself to snack throughout the day. I keep at least two pieces of fruit, yogurt, string cheese and 100 calorie bars stashed away. No matter how munchy I am, I have never managed to eat everything in the stash in one day and even if I did, I would still be eating less than 450 calories total. Even on a 1200 calorie target, this is completely absorbable by making slightly smaller dinner choices (dinner often features vegetable, tomato or butternut squash soup if I have gone heavy during the day).
Actually, oddly enough, I think the routine of my boring 9-5 office job actually helps my weightloss efforts. I eat meals/snacks at the same time, I work out at the same time, I drink a lot of water because I have nothing else to do. The routine of it all (especially the working out part), makes it all second nature, I don't even really have to think about it. I usually fall apart on weekends.
I know exactly what you mean! I also work a desk job and my mind tends to wander to food. Especially when the office very slow.I try not to keep temptations around my office area so that I can't cheat on my diet.
Totally!! On the weekends I can almost forget to eat during the day if I get busy, here at work....I am fighting the mini chocolate bar in the candy dish demon right now!!! Coffee Crisp to be exact!! Logging it helps - then I see how stupid it is and I can usually nip it in the butt! I never want to miss a supper for a silly little piece of junk food!! :)
Oh... I want to be a part of this club!
I'm at the first office job I've ever had! I sit on my butt, and guess what - it's my responsibility to keep the candy jar full of chocolate all day! My job is mind-numbing and the most entertaining thing to do is eat.
However, I try to maintain the mentality that eating isn't going to make the time go faster, and once I'm done indulging I'll have ruined my diet - and it'll most likely only be about 2 minutes later :)
I agree with all of you, I too sit on my booty all day long, and in my office every little think requires a pot luck lol, today there is actually a bake sale for Race for the Cure. I try my best not to take part, and since starting to eat healthy I plan my day, that way if I'm feeling super munchy when my food is gone then I'm SOL till I get home and make dinner. I also drink tea and water all day long, so if I get hungry I will drink tea sometimes coffee with a little cream if I'm super hungry.
Its best to stay on top of it cause I have watched ppl start and get caught up and put on weight like crazy! I have always been kind of a yo-yoer but always get it under control when I notice it gettin too out of control.
And yes on weekends I have no problem sometimes I have to look at the clock and decide crap its time to eat! That is if my kids haven't reminded me already! I love the weekends!!! One more day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stupid desk jobs :(
Lets all start doing squats behind the desk, and bench-pressing our chairs!
Who's with me?!? :)

ROFL! That made my day! =)
I tried to get one of those stability balls to sit on instead of a chair. You know, just so I would be doing SOMETHING. It got shot down. Stupid workers' comp/safety concerns ![]()
I agree that it's hard not to think about food while just sitting at a desk. However, on the plus side, I've made a rule that I can only eat out once a week (and that includes food from the snack bar and vending machines downstairs), so while I may be thinking about food, I am only allowed to eat the food I brought in with me. Once that's gone, I'm SOL. It helps!
It is a constant battle for me.
I try to make sure to bring meals and snacks with a lot of fiber or protein - because they are more filling. I might eat less volume for the same amount of calories but I stay full longer.
I also set goals for myself. For instance, this morning I fifnished breakfast at 8, so no snacking until at least 10. Then, when I have my snack I decide what time I can have lunch and so on. It helps when I can remind myself that I just ate an hour ago or tell myself I can eat again in 30 minutes (so water will have to hold me until then). Keeps me from snacking all day when I feel hungry and breaks up the monotony of the day.
Keeps the feedings to a minimum but doesn't keep me from thinking about food all day long!
I can so relate to this post. Although I don't really think of food while doing a desk job, it sometimes robs me off the motivation to do my workout ( i workout after work), it happened to me a couple of times and i really feel bad about it.
I wonder if we can do our jobs standing up, its better right? at least you can move from side to side .. or do squats LOL
I recently started a routine though, i take short breaks and get out of the office to do a two- 10 minutes walks each day. :)
Oh yeah. If I'm really busy or out and about...not a problem. But if my workload is low I struggle. I constantly want something. I drink water, tea, etc to try to curve the cravings. I've tried gum and spreading my snacks out but I can't help wanting more. I just watch that clock ticking away so I can go home and have dinner.
