diabetic weight loss

Quote  |  Reply

I mainly just have a couple of quick questions and could use some feed back. My question is how and where can you find good for you food that is sugar free?

I have looked in all of grocery stores in my area and everything either has a small amount of sugar in it or it has sugar alcohol (which is also considered sugar). Everything else has too much sugar in it or has alot of carbs (which your body turns into sugar) in it or has alot of natural sugar. What is a person suppose to do?

Thank you for your time.

You should consider checking with a nutritionist.  They can guide you on a proper plan for diabetes.

I do know that my diabetic friend, who went to a nutritionist, cut out processed sugar.  Eats a reasonable amount of natural sugar, like fruit.  And eats complex carbs, like whole grains.  In fact, the fiber content of a food is something he takes into consideration when choosing foods.  The higher the fiber content, the better.

A good rule of thumb is that the more processed a food is, the less good for you it is.  Try to get as much whole food as you can into your diet, and keep processed food to a minimum.

I'm confused about the sugar alcohols.  My parents are both diabetic, and their diabetic doc said that sugar alcohols, in moderation, were fine.  In fact, a lot of diabetic pre-packaged foods are sweetened with sugar alcohols.  But I'm not a nutritionist, so you should look into it yourself.

You might want to check out the American Diabetes Association website for more information.  http://www.diabetes.org

I am diabetic and I follow a rule of thumb that not everything must be sugar free just under 7grms of sugar but this is not an all the time meal plan for me.  Just because you are diabetic doesn't mean you should stay totally away from sugar because some foods have it naturally or turn into sugar as you mentioned.

I did see a nutritionist and this is what was told to me.  The above advice is exactly what the nutritionist told me so I would take note and do what you can to stay within those guidelines.

another site you can go to for information is

www.diabetesselfmanagement.com  they have a bi-monthly magazine loaded with tons of information.  You can check out their site first and see if you like some of the content.  I think you will find it very useful.  TO SAVE YOURSELF AND GET THE MOST OF YOUR FIRST VISIT, GO ARMED WITH ALL THE FOODS YOU HAVE EATEN IN A TWO WEEK PERIOD.  THE CALORIE COUNT LOG MINE REALLY LIKED. I'D USE THAT AS A TOOL.

Take care and the best thing to do is see a Diabetes educator.  Your medical plan (most) should cover 3 visits. Check into that too.

You can always ask your grocer to get in sugar free items, if you don't see them. Talk to the manager.  They have done that for me. In some instances I had to purchase the whole lot but that was rare.

Good luck.  The stores I go to are the regular grocers except the wholesalers like Sam's, Costco.  Meijer, Biggs, Kroger, Marsh here in Ohio has it.  It is between Kroger and Meijer who has the most Sugar Free foods.

www.Waldenfarms.com is another site that one of my friends here gave me. I just went on her recommendation on food items. But remember you pay shipping so that might keep you away from it because most of it is pricey.

God Bless.
