Just Diagnosed with Hypothyroidism

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone!  I was very interested to see if anyone else in on CC had this condition & how their weight changed because of it.

I just had my first-ever "Adult" physical with full bloodwork.  I got the results in the mail today telling me that I have Hypothyroidism (Low/underactive thyroid).  I have been prescribed 100mg Synthroid once a day.

Is there anyone else who is in this situation?  Did it effect your weightloss?  Did you feel different after taking the meds?

Any advise/comments are extremely appriciated!

I have hypothryodism, but it also runs in my family which may be the reason I have it.  It really didn't affect my weight much which is odd I know because one of the key symptoms is weight gain and fatigue.  I take 50 of the synthroid and have for about a year now.

Mine was also discovered after a routine medical! I didn't realise just how bad I felt until about 3wks into taking the meds (started at 100, stabilised now on 75). I had so much more energy! I used to be nodding off at 8pm, now I have trouble going to bed sometimes! LOL! It hasn't really affected my weight-loss efforts, but I'm battling to up my cals & get my metabolism working after years of bulimia & yo-yo dieting- so that battle has to be won first? There are quite a few of us one here- do a search for 'hypothyroidism' & you'll see all the relevant posts.

I was diagnosed 3 months ago and have taken the Levathyroxin in increasing doses until I reached 75 mcg.  I am still very tired but I also have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome...so I guess that figures.  I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes 6 months ago and take 2 meds for it, but my sugar levels don't stablixe and I crave sugar.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me how to control the sugars and how to maintain the prescribed 1200 calorie diabetic, low sodium and low fat, cholestrol diet?  I am having no weight loss and I am gettin weaker and in more pain each day.  It would be nice to be able to walk  2 blocks to the store.

I have heart problems and arterial problems as well.  Anyone suggestions out there?  Anyone please???

Welcome to the club. I'm surprised that your doctor started you on 100mg, what was your TSH level?

I was diagnosed last year with a TSH of 4.9 and a lot of symptoms. At 25mg Synthroid I dropped to 3.7 and my weight leveled off after gaining for a year and a half. At 50mg I dropped to a TSH of 2.7, but my symptoms persisted (joint pain, sore muscles, tired all the time, etc. I was tested again 5 months later and now I am up to 7.6. Has anyone else seen this type of THS gain after you had been getting better?

I thought I was getting better and then my TSH levels triple! I was just telling a friend that I had finally been feeling less sore all the time and then the soreness started again. Then I got my results and it made sense.

Cheers and well wishes to all who suffer the symptoms of being a hypo,

Scar

Hi there, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, the autoimmune version of hypothyroidism.  I found out about two years ago after feeling crappy for a long time and gaining like 10-15 pounds per year over the last five years.  I finally went to the doctor when my throat closed up due to thyroid inflammation.  I thought I had strep throat.  Go figure.

I take Synthroid to manage the symptoms.  I started on 25 and moved up to 50 earlier this year.  I feel a little better.  I have good days and bad days.  I still find it difficult to manage my weight though.

I read Mary Shomon's "Living Well with Hypothyroidism" book and it's been helpful in terms of understanding the disease and how to manage it.
