Read the ingredient label. It's chock-full of chemicals! :-(

aspartame, above all is quite toxic apparently.

my mom and i were talking over diet and lifestyle today and can't quite figure out why people don't recognize drinking pop/soda for the evil it is. i personally think it is a vile addiction when drank more than one glass per week.

is drinking pop a status thing held over from the 50's?

even though aspartame doesn't contain any calories, your body can have an insulin response to it, almost like the full sugar pops. By creating insulin "spikes" your body lowers its metabolism and you won't burn calories as effectively.
Diet coke isn't bad for weight loss.  It's calorie-free, after all.  It's just bad for your health if you drink too much of it (see http://fitsugar.com/978734 for just one example of how it's bad for you).  Personally, I think it's OK to have one every now and then...as with anything else that's bad for you.  My special weekly meal of a (veggie) burger and (oven-baked) fries just isn't the same without a diet coke.

I think I'll stick with my evil and vile addiction.

One or two diet sodas a day wont hurt you. Just drink it in moderation. Smile

Sodas are bad, both diet and regular, on a diet or not. I'm guilty of drinking one occasionally but I definitely wouldn't do it everyday.
yeah im a college student who usually pulls a lot of all nighters and the only way i can do that is with coke... (i hate coffee and tea) .... thanks for the links! i didnt know it was that bad :/ ahhhh
"Spookychick" Not to sound really arrogant, But I can easily say that eating an abundant amount of celery every day is an addiction as well, Good Or bad It's an addiction.
its ok to have one or two a day but watch your sodium intake unless you want to retain water

Isn't Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda now? Which isn't aspartame.

Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda is a seperate thing. There are both kinds:)

I read somewhere that all the artificial sweeteners make you crave REAL sweets.  Or that it's a mental thing.  People think "I've been drinking diet coke all day, it's alright if I have a piece of cake now."  It sounds silly, and I don't think it's really been proven.  I've been drinking tons of diet coke since I started dieting and have been losing a lot of weight.  But yeah, it's obviously not nutritious.  I wanna try that diet coke plus stuff...
I like cherry coke zero but sad to say  I gave up soda dont crave it anymore
Splenda really isn't any better. But then again, soda is bad, sugar/aspartame/splenda or not.

....hmmm, you guys have convinced me. i'll cut down of the diet soda. i drink diet soda every day and never in moderation. A LOT more than 2 a day, but i'm to ashamed to say what amount. geee, i sound like an AA member.

time to detox my body from that stuff..... but i really am addicted.

I used to not see the problem with soda at all, non-diet.

I drank multiple cans a day.

When I stopped drinking it a while back, I realized why it was so bad.

It wreaked havoc on my digestive system... I found out when I would slip and have one.

As for diet soda... aspartame tastes absolutely disgusting and makes my stomach even more upset.

Most things Have pro's and con's to them......That's why we pick our battles....Personally I prefer the diet soda's with splenda but hey that's just me.....I think that it's all in what your goals are....if you want to eat as naturally as you can then it probably wouldn't be a good idea....if your goal is to lose weight but continue to eat the things you do now and just lowering the portion changeing to less calorie substitutes then go for it.....I think it's deffinatly a personal decission that only you can make......

Okay yes, there's sodium in it, and yes, our bodies have more difficulty processing artificial sweeteners than the real thing.  And yes, I'm sure there's lots of research about whether or not even switching to diet soda makes a difference to anyone.  And yeah, if a rat eats like 6 billion mg of aspartame daily it'll probably get cancer.  But here's the thing....teflon has degradation products that cause cancer.  Concrete is faintly radioactive, thus able to cause cancer, hell, there is even a substance in the eyes, skin, and green parts of potatoes that is dangerous (solanine).  Artificial vanilla too (coumarin).  Yes that is true.  Wiki these things if you really want to know more.  Now I'm not saying people should throw caution to the wind and stop looking before they cross the street.  What I am saying, is that life is short.  And often the risks of these allegedly toxic oh-so-damaging chemicals is not anymore than anything else we're ingesting.

So I'm going to keep drinking diet coke, because I love the burn, and I love the caffeine, and the negative effects all that extra sugar (in regular soda, or even juice!) would have on me would be worse than whatever the aspartame does.

I haven't had a Diet Coke since December 8, 2007.  I used to drink about 8-10 cans per day.

How did I quit?  I went to Vegas for five days, when I returned I realized I hadn't had a soda during the whole trip...I was drinking diet beer the whole time.  Surprised

Anyway, I decided to go cold turkey.   It was harder for me than giving up alcohol or dieting - but I made it.  I feel a lot better and I'm not retaining nearly as much fluid (esp for a fat guy)...

A can or two per day won't hurt you, almost anything is OK in moderation!

I probably drink 100 oz of Diet Coke a day! Other than hot tea (when it's so blasted cold out) and post-workout water, it's my main source of hydration. And I've lost 135 lb while doing so. It doesn't affect my weight loss and it doesn't make me sick. So I'm good. Maybe when I'm at maintenance, I'll worry about my Diet Coke habit.
