Diet coke. Is it really 0 - 3 calories?

I bought a calorie counting book and it says that diet coke is like no calories. is this true because all ive been drinking is water and a wee sip of coke every now and then. I feel like i need something other than water alone... i HATE water! lol Help !

yeah diet pop has almost zero calories, i know this for sure because of weight watchers. So knock your socks off.... also you can try tea if you're bored, a bit of juice or milk to mix it up maybe with a meal.

Flavoured water is awesome too, if you haven't tried it yet! My personal favourite is Aquafina's Raspberry Flavour Splash...only 10 cals per 591 ml bottle :).
there were posts on how an additive in the diet coke hinders weight loss and that there were a bunch of studues...can't bring myself to even look that up i cant give up the cherry diet coke....

thanks for your help everyone. :)

I wouldn't pay attention to the 'drinking diet soda erodes your innards and makes you obese' thinkers. A can or two a day is fine to keep yourself hydrated while keeping it interesting. It's when you drink nothing but diet soda that it gets bad.

Black coffee also has little to no calories. Millstone coffee has different flavors like Hazelnut Cream that are also defined as a 0 calorie drink.

Annnd Crystal Lite is very nice. I haven't found a flavor of theirs that I haven't liked - including iced tea! It's like 5 calories a cup, but it's so packed full of flavor, it's worth it.

diet Coke will NOT keep you hydrated because it has caffeine in it, and caffeine is a diuretic.  For the purpose of hydration, drinks such as the Crystal Lights or Diet Sprite or Minute Maid, are better.

As far as "keeping you obese" I don't think diet drinks deserve THAT bad a rap, but here's the scientific "skinny", to coin a phrase.

Today's artificial sweeteners such aspartame and especially the new sucralose (splenda) are SO similar to natural sugar that when they go into your bloodstream, the body thinks you have ingested sugar, which triggers the release of insulin.  Then what happens is a couple of things ... firstly, when you have higher levels of insulin in your blood than you need, you will crave carbs.  Secondly, the insulin will be running around in your bloodstream with nothing to do, which at the very least can elicit a mild insulin shock.

Of course, if you drink a diet soda with a meal, it won't hurt - the food will likely have some carbs in it to give that insulin something to do.  But for folks who basically subsist on diet drinks in an effort to lose weight, you won't accomplish this in a healthy manner, and you could be setting yourself up for greater health complications.

Actually, Diet Coke DOES have a mild.. I forget the world.. but chemical that makes you pee.

However, you actually gain more water drinking Diet Coke than you do via pee.

I don't think artificial sweetners are necessarily good things, though there's been no study yet showing that they cause harm to the human body (though such a study may yet occur, no one's studied the long term effects of today's artificial sweeteners on people, since they are such relatively recently inventions.)

Water is the best choice for drink, but.. Diet Coke isn't the worst.
i agree. to me, diet coke is totally necessary and it used to be all i drank. i can't give it up, but i've definietely broadened my horizons. crystal lite has some really great flavors, and there are soooo many flavored waters nowadays; i love the dasani lemon water. regular water is quite boring, but it can be spruced up if you put your mind to it.

Actually, caffeine is no more of a diuretic than water.

I am an admitted Diet Coke addict.  I drink a lot of it, and I am a fully-functioning, non-dehydrated female of healthy weight.  According to every doctor I've ever spoken to about it, from a caloric perspective it's a free liquid, like water or unsweetened tea.
I think that everyone has a different reaction to it.  There are those who are allergic, those whose body produced insulin from it, etc.  Everyone has to figure out their own reaction, one of the reasons that I believe diet drinks don't help you lose weight is the sodium content which is known to make you retain water.

I do drink diet drinks, sometimes even several in a day.  I generally stay away from them and stick to coffee or tea and limit my Fuze drinks to 1 per day, and I do drink several large glasses of water in any given day.
it turns out that companies can kind of trick us and get away with it!!- they are allowed to say "zero calories" but it can have up to 5-10  calories PER SERVING and they are allowed to legally say "zero calories" - I learned that from a NO-NAME product i was reading randomly- i think it was my no-name sweetners or something...but its either 5 or 10- i forget- but thats sooo low that it doesnt matter how much you think- you wont gain a 1/1000000000 of a pound!! lol!
