How do I give up diet soda? Any suggestions would be helpful
Water with lemon in it!
Or if you really need the fizz, drink some mineral water mixed with pure, no-sugar-added fruit juice.
Stop buying it :)
Seriously. I've more or less weaned myself off of diet (and I know I've mentioned this in, like, 5 other posts today) and just drank water whenever it was available. I just stopped buying it, and either drink filtered or bottled water at home or if I'm out at a friends' house, I grab a liter bottle of water at the grocery store on the way over, so I'm not tempted to grab some of their diet.
LaCroix mineral water. Comes flavored with lemon, lime, berry....
0 calories. Great taste. And you still get that carbonation. lol
best way is to go cold turkey. Easier said than done for sure though. I'm trying to quit too and I'm a few days in. I'm also cutting out all aspartame and artificial sweetners. You'd be surprised how much is in all those "diet" products. I've just been drinking a whole lot of water and keep reminding myself that what I'm doing is better for me.
Playing the devil's advocate: Why would you want to give up diet drinks?
I've done the research (for real, as in, peer reviewed scientific journals, NOT the internet) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with diet soft drinks. In fact, they have been linked, not only with weight loss, but with weight maintenance as well. They've tested both aspartame and sucralose, even overdosing HUMANS, and have found no adverse effects.
The only downsides to pop is that, in teenagers, they find it correlates to low bone density because teens are choosing pop over milk and so not getting their calcium, and the acidity can wreck teeth (solution: use a straw)
I personally have a diet pomegranate anytime I feel peckish to help avoid snacking.
If you're addicted to the caffeine, it might help the first few days along to pop some Excedrin. It has caffeine in it. No pain worse than caffeine withdrawl! It's also easier to ween off a pill than a habit of soda.
I've quit several times, but I always go back. I just love soda too gosh-darn much. And the only studies I've read about how diet soda makes you fat, is because the sweetners tend to make you crave more sweet. Doesn't bother me much. I've got my sugar-free jello on call! Plus, soda, coffee, jello, and pudding are really the only daily sweetners I use. At this point, I'd rather have an egg-white omelet than a candy bar. So I think even the sugar-crave thing is a little whack.

Source please.
I love soda pop.. it is horrible but I do. I usually go for diet Pepsi or coke zero.. although if i want to treat myself nothing is better then a cold bottle of coke in the morning!!
I have given it up before.. and it is horrible..40 days! only way to do it is cold turkey.. when you are addicted, trying to replace with other fizzy drinks just made me mad and crave a real coke even more. Of course everyone is different.. are you addicted to the caffeine.. the sugary taste the fizz the feel... for me.. it had to specifically be coke classic first thing in the morning... makes you wonder what is really in there. LOL
That being said , I am back to drinking soda pop again.. one coke zero at work, and one diet Pepsi at home. Yes yes, I know the sweetener can cause horrible brain tumors etc.. and the potential for weight gain due to confusing my body...
If you want to continue.. just make sure you take care of your teeth... the diet still wrecks them.. get enough calcium.. and drink lots of water too!
If you want to quiet.. decide what part you are addicted to and try a healthier substitution..
Good Luck!! It can be done totally! You can do!
I've been filling up pitchers of water and steeping green tea bags in them. It gives the water some flavor and is healthy.
I'm with nanuq905. Why give it up? I have found whenever giving up diet soda, I tend to crave, and eat and drink, more things that are higher in calories.
Diet soda seems to suppress my appetite. I have success when drinking it, tougher times when giving it up.
