Diet Coke/Coke Zero

Quote  |  Reply
Diet Coke has 3 calories per 500ml bottle, Coke Zero has 2calories.

So why does diet coke still exist? :s

Am I alone here?

Is coke zero, caffeine free too?  Some people like their caffiene.

Maybe it's a marketing thing too.  People just like the sound of "diet", so if it didn't exist maybe they'd lose customers to "diet pepsi".
LOL!  No, I thought the same thing.  I prefer Zero over diet anyday and its all about the taste, not calories.  In a perfect world I would like to drink regular coke, but such as life.
on that rationale alot of products wouldn't exist anymore. I think coke zero, especially as available in europe is Blerk! so is coke light for that matter, but i still very much appreciate a good diet coke. (even though i have pretty much quit) but my mum etc like coke zero alot better. i guess it just depends on what you are used to drinking.
I love Coke Zero!  To me, it tastes like real Coke.  Probably cause I haven't had real coke in a few years but hey, ignorance is bliss.  I bet Diet Coke still exists because it sells like crazy.  People don't switch from their regular fix very easily!
I believe they came out with Coke Zero as a version of Diet Coke that was designed to taste more like regular Coke.  There are however a lot of people that prefer the taste of Diet Coke to regular coke.  Not wanting to lose that business Coke came out with Coke Zero and still kept the normal Diet Coke.  I personally prefer Diet Coke to Coke Zero.  I also remember there being a big deal about them changing the taste of Coke when I was a kid and not too many people liked it.  Coke went back to the original formula calling it Coca-Cola Classic.
Diet coke still exists because I support the coca-cola company by buying a TON of it.. lol.. I'm trying to cut back, but i've been drinking the crap for 20 some years (and i'm only 22!)..

If/when I quit, the Coca-cola company is going to lose out on a decent amount of money.
i like both, but am more used to diet coke. i used to drink tons of regular soda back in highschool. i LOVED regular coke. so over the weekend i was a little under the weather (hungover) and thought maybe a little regular coke would make my stomach feel better. i could barely drink half a 20oz! it tasted SO sugary and gross. i really have changed!

ah I see. I thought they tasted the same :s maybe it's just me, I haven't drunk real coke in years.
Okay, here's the scoop: Diet Coke came out in 1982. It used a completely different formula from the original Coca-Cola, based on the fact that Nutrasweet had its own particular flavor. Basically, they knew they couldn't make it taste like Coke, so they made it radically different instead. As an aside, 'New Coke', released in 1985, used the Diet Coke formula with sugar (well, HFCS). Despite having been incredibly succesful in taste tests, it was rejected by the public, prompting the quick return of 'Coca-Cola Classic' to shelves.

Coke Zero, on the other hand, uses the same formula as Coca-Cola Classic, but replaces the sugar with a blend of Nutrasweet (aspartame) and acesulfame-K. With the aftertaste of the aspartame diluted a bit, it tastes similar enough to Classic to appeal to those who don't like Diet Coke (me, for example).

Both products have their fans, and the company would be nuts to discontinue either one right now.

I'm still wondering why the difference between 2 and 3 calories would matter to anyone - if you drank ten 500ml bottles a day (!) for a year, that one calorie difference would amount to one extra pound of fat.
Diet coke PLUS is the best of all. Screw the Zero. Of course I still have my regular ol diet coke on occasion :)

People develop a taste. You cant just toss it out the window with YOUR opinion
I love both Zero and the Diet Plus they taste different...I prefer the Zero, but well with the added vitamins Plus is a good option too. I buy them by the ton when on sale then I keep all the coke points too. Get free stuff I might as well I buy enough of it!!
i like diet coke better purely because it is less fizzy than normal and zero. I prefer less fizzy drinks.
i believe coke zero uses splenda
Cherry Zero is the only diet soda I've ever liked.  It's freakin awesome.  I love regular Cherry Coke, but feel so guilty when I drink it, mainly because of the filmy feeling of my teeth afterward... but Cherry Zero doesn't cause that feeling, and is just plain stupendous.  :)

What I see is 0 calories on any diet coke version.  I was confused too, so this link below explains it.  I tried diet coke plus today, because I figure if the research saying how bad diet coke is for you is true, I may as well get some vitamins and minerals at the same time :)

a flat mate of mine works for coke in the UK, according to him its a marketing strategy to appeal to a wider market demographic, by advertising to health concsious males who are put off by the overly feminine advertising campaigns associated with diet coke.

i dont know how true that is, but it would seem to make sense, the adverts here have been pretty blokey, and i know a lot of guys who would happily buy coke zero but wouldnt be seen dead with a can of diet coke in their hands. (dudududada :D lol). and it would certainly increase profits by increasing marketshare

how bad is diet pepsi?  ive drank 2 cans and a bottle in 2 days, should i stop now?
2 cans and a bottle in 2 days? I drink 2-4 liters a day.
diet coke has a similar sweetness to diet pepsi.  Coke zero has less sweetner(Asparatame) so it tastes more like coke which is much less sweet then pepsi.  Thats the difference in calories. I love zero personally.
I'll drink Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. But the Coke Zero is too sweet for me.
