Diet & Exercice Rut! :S

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone,

I need a little bit of help I think! Lately I am stuck in this rut where I want to be eating healthy but my cravings are getting the best of me every time and I can't get myself to exercice for so reason. I love running but for about a month now I can't seem to put those running shoes on and get my butt outside to run.

When you guys hit a wall like this what do you do to get back on track?

Thanks!

Hey,

I'm in exactly the same position right now... I have been dieting for 8  weeks now and I have lost 15lbs but for the last two weeks I've been craving anything that's bad for me - even stuff I wouldn't usually eat. I started to exercise for 40mins at least 3 times a week and that has also gone out of the window.... I seem too tired and seriously lacking in motivation.

BUT today is my turning point.... I don't want to waste all the effort I put in to losing the 15lbs and the clothes that are starting to get loose on me - i certainly don't want them to be tight ever again!.... I read on this site before that we have to see this as a marathon and not a sprint and our "blips" were just a pit-stop but we must continue!...

I have an all or nothing mentality... when i'm good, i'm really good but one chocolate bar or ice cream then i lose it and want to eat everything!

I'm not gouing to beat myself up about what junk i've actually eaten over the last 2 weeks but move on from it and be determined to finish this marathon!....

Sorry if i've had a bit of a rant about myself - but i know it's hard... keep going! x x x

It is so hard to make these kinds of lifestyle changes and then maintain them over time.

First of, be kind to yourself!  It's just like riding a bike, if you fall, get back on the bike and try again.  A day or a week or a month....just don't beat yourself up and get back on track.

You can do it!

this has happened to me - it's my downfall - where I fall off the wagon.

One thing that works for me is to convinve myself to go for just a 10 minute run.

Once you are out there and running - you will probably go for longer, and even if you don't you will be getting back into the habit again, and you can increase the distance gradually again.   I find that once I get running again, the diet begins to fall back into place.

The main thing is to forgive yourself for going off plan for little while, and to get started again.

I hope that helps...

Hey, I've been feeling the same way for a couple of weeks - that's why I came to the Motivation forum.  I usually find something to kick-start me here and I just did.  Your post reminded me that I'm not alone.  This happens to all of us and it's ok

We don't have to be perfect to succeed, we just have to keep trying.  We have to forgive ourselves and, like ncurlee said, "get back up on that bike and try again".

Re-motivate yourself by reviewing your goals or trying something new - change your exercise plan or try some new recipes. I think sometimes we get bored - no biggie. Just set a date and start again.  This quote helps me:

i hate when this happens! i don't have much of a problem exercising b/c its really all i have known my entire life, but i get in bad eating ruts. I feel like once you're on track, it becomes kind of (gasp) easy to stay on track, but once you get off its easy to stay off too haha. but i always look at it as, as long as i am doing my best, thats all i can ask for. a bad week is going to happen sometimes you know? and one bad week won't make you fat. ok but with the exercising here are some things that help me to make sure i do it. first, don't go home first, bring your gym stuff with you if you work. set it in your mind that there are no ifs, ands or buts and that you are heading to the gym/park directly after work. or if you are lucky enough to be a morning person, say to yourself before you go to bed "the first thing i am going to do tom is get up, put on my shoes and go for my run (or whatever type of exercise you do). it doesn't have to be long or grueling especially at first. make it so that it is something you enjoy. also, if you have any friends or family members that like to work out, get a buddy, (preferably a reliable one) to make you go on those days you really don't want to, and you can do that for them on their rough days.

about eating, i find this much more difficult. the first things i try to do is incorporate better foods into my diet. i'll do something simple at first like, no matter what i eat today, i am going to have a piece of fruit to start my day. alot of times, if i start well i want to keep doing well. even if you are able to do well most of the time, the slip ups won't be a big deal. we are human and those things happen. i find its easier to get back on track if i actually worry about it less/don't feel too guilty.

p.s. i love this! how true.

Agreed.  and for whatever it's worth.  I no longer use the diet word.  It's simply how I need to live my life.  This way when you do crave that certain something, Have it.  Enjoy it, than move on.  Don't think well now I've "cheated"  ...this just undermines all your hard work and afterall, if you aren't on a "DIET"  than it's not a cheat, it's just something you enjoyed and than back to business.  Good Luck and like Run said... none of us is here alone. :)

Thank you all for your replies! :)

You guys all gave really good advice.

I woke up this morning and decided to get back on the wagon! :)

I wish you all the best!

Me too - good luck to US! Wink

I went for a run on my lunch break and I feel so much better now! :)

I think I just needed to get the first run to get me motivated again! It's so easy to not exercice for one day and say the heck I didn't exercice yesterday and it didn't hurt me so I won't go again today, the next day.

Most EXCELLENT!  One day at a time.

Good to know I'm not the only one in a rut. I've lost almost 60lbs in a year and still need need to lose 25 more.

I'm a teacher so I'm off for July and August. I thought it would be great for being active and losing weight, but not so much. Too many BBQ's and drinks. Also not running like I was when I was on a schedule.

But at least I've mostly maintained my weight. Today went rollerblading. Also lots of healthy food in my fridge.

Well done jgoguen  and runyourlife - I'm so pleased you are back running and on track.

Good luck x

I know how you feel! And its a horrible feeling. I had a great week and it took two days to ruin it all. I just ate all day anything I wanted and for once was too afraid to add up how much I had eaten. I have also been slacking in the exercise department. I love to exercise and love how it makes me feel, yet it still isnt' enough to make me want to exercise.

I say we should stop feeling sorry for ourselves and just do it. I see this as me not caring and one's health is something to always care about. It should never be put on the back burner. We can do it!!
