Diet food or LESS QUANTITY normal food?

What's your option?

For me, I'd rather eat half a slice of real cake, or 25g of milk chocolate (with strawberry cream *gasp*) or handful of pretzels for a desert then a bigger sized sugar free, fat free "diet" treat full of chemicals. I mean, maybe 5% of them actually taste that good, but all of them don't really satisfy...

Same with food. I'd rather eat about 3-4 ounces  of pan fried liver (lots of fat booo) once in a while, or 3-4 ounces of shnitzel, with a nice side of salad, rather then go for fatfree cheese on rice cakes with a glass of fat free milk ANYTIME. Mind you I don't eat fried things everyday, I usually get my protein from grilled chicken or tuna, but I'm not afraid of skin on a drumstick or a tiny portion of french fries. I balance it out by eating a big salad, and lots of fruit for the rest of the day.

I don't know, maybe I'm weird, here I see so many people trying to find the elusive 0 calorie 0 fat 0 sugar snack they can BINGE on to their heart's desire.

But for me - fat free - leaves me hungry. Sugar free - satisfies for the moment, and then gives me mad cravings for actual sugar, and super low calorie - leaves me both stuffed and hungry which is just weird.

I can understand wanting to eat natural but the irrational "omg chemicals" fear is kind of funny to me.  :P

haha, tell that to my migraines!

I know people that get migraines from aspartame as well.  I personally don't, but I can believe that it happens to some people.  I'm just saying in general people have interesting notions about food additives.

I'm for the real stuff most of the time.  You just have to have self control and eat smaller portions.  As far as dairy goes everything but my cheese is low fat.  I eat regular sweets as well.  just had half a milky way actually. LOL   I even eat Flaming hot Cheetos from time to time. I find that eating the good stuff fills my cravings better.  I just measure and control everything that I eat.

combo--it depends on what we're talking about. i'd prefer light ice cream to regular generally speaking. but i eat low fat cottage cheese instead of non-fat because i like the texture better. i eat regular crackers usually, not fat free. i eat hummus, and other things that are not necessarily diet foods because i like them. so, i kind of find a balance. i don't compromise taste and satisfaction for calories but if there is a good substitute that i don't mind at all then i will take the lower calorie one.

There are a few things that I honestly can't tell the difference between regular and light -- smoked salmon flavoured cream cheese (favourite treat - both original and light are full of unnatural things), hellmans mayo, cheap mozzarella (no comparison with the good stuff though), and I like reduced-fat peanut butter better than regular - but then again it has almost the same number of calories. I think it tastes like icing, its so sweet.

I do drink diet fizzy lemonade and other fruity fizzy drinks.

I read somewhere that the potential / possible risks posed by aspartame are much much less than the real risks posed by the glue used to hold particle board and laminate flooring together (also used to glue many carpets to the floor).  And everyone worries about diet sodas, but no-one is freaking out about their Ikea coffee tables.  I wish I could find this article - I've googled and googled, but the general idea was that our perception of risk was way out of whack.

Shnitzel? It's usually chicken breast (or some other lean meat) dipped in egg and then fried. Pan fried liver is simply chicken liver, fried in a pan :P

Liver does have a lot of cholesterol, but it also has LOTS of vitamins and iron, and minerals. We're talking massive iron, and vitamin A, and on and such. I end up craving it on my PMS week and I can definitely detect a good effect if I do eat.

Family cholesterolemia is indeed a PITA. I'm lucky in that my blood test are ace, no matter what I eat, but when I eat healthy, I can pass off as a baby :P

yeah i have never heard of shnitzel.  and liver doesn't sound appealing to me i have never tryed it  =0
i'd say if yu really like them and can eat the smaller portion - go with that if your not above your calories!!!

great on the blood work.
giving up refined sugar was hard on me - its easier for me to keep to a low fat diet BUT LOW SUGAR SUCKS, for me-i really like the sugars!!!

I hear you on the Pepsi Max and Coke Zero.   It is hard to give up if you don't drink coffee.  But otherwise, diet food are always a trade off.  You trade fat for sugar, sugar for sodium,   there has to be something to give it flavor or no one would buy it.  You are better off just monitoring portion size and not splurging too much, think about what you are putting into your body and what it does to your health.
