diet foods
ok so i thought i had to vent this ive been gaining weight for some time in the beginning id listen to the ed voice and have skimmed milk , diet yogurts , low fat crisps , low fat custard . in the beginning i gained on this . but then one day i thought im sick of this fat phobia i dont want to live the rest of my life affoiding foods in fear im going to challenge this beleve so with help from my theapists i started introducing normals versions . yes id forgotten what the feel thing tasted like . it was hard but i did it and im glad my fear was invalid my weight didnt shoot . but how much better does proper yogurt, milk etc taste? i can tell you god knows how i coped on that low fat food for so long :) everything in moderation right xx
ok so HONESTLY full fat cheese, especially when melted with meat, is glorious. I'm so glad too that I conquered that. Full fat milk in coffee is devine.
But I still just prefer reduced fat cream cheese! It has fat in it so its not like its nothing but I just prefer the taste! I wonder if that's something in my head?
Helen I'm so proud of you for buying those things. Please take care of yourself. YOU KNOW that Calcium is best absorbed with Vitamin D which is FAT SOLUBLE so if you are eating full fat calcium rich foods you're doing EVEN BETTER THINGS for your body!
Meryl?? Are you out there? Can you tell Helen what you told me about the potential health benefits to full fat dairy? I think it was the stearic acid but I'm running to class so I can't look it up....
I'm proud of you Helen!
I totally agree!! Now if I'm forced to eat any of those diet foods, they don't appeal to me at all! They don't make me feel full at all... No wonder those losing weight have so many problems eating only those 'diet' foods. I still remember the day I reintroduced milk with fat in it. My mom and her boyfriend always get the 2%, so I decided to challenge myself a few weeks back to drink at least a full glass. I can't even begin to describe how delicious it was!! I loved the texture and taste. I felt like I was drinking it for the first time! I loved it sooo much, I ended up drinking the whole carton!! lol Then a couple days later when I went back to my dad's house, I had some of the skim milk, and I nearly puked. It was like water!! :-x
I've pretty much switched to all the non-diet forms of food now, and I plan to keep it that way even when I'm maintaining. The way I see it, you're doing more harm to your body eating all those harmful chemicals compared to the real (and usually more natural) things.
helen, you're so wonderful, and such an inspiration!
the things that make the biggest difference to me are milk (the change from skim to 1% to 2% to whole is amazing!), yogurt (i prefer plain which makes it even more obvious), and omg, sugar vs. splenda. possibly the biggest difference of anything.
i don't eat any unnaturally fat free foods anymore, although a lot of things i take the middle road on, and i wish i didn't. i don't have a problem with full-fat/sugar when i go out, but by myself i still struggle sometimes. this post really helped me a lot.
keep up the good work! :)
my mother's been a yo-yo dieter pretty much her whole life so i've been raised on lowfat and diet food. the taste of diet is the "norm" for me. whole milk or full fat stuff taste funny to me.

lol I agree. It does taste like water. We grew up with 2% in our house, but one day my dad accidently bought the skim milk carton. I was curious to see how it tasted, so poured myself a glass. :/ It really has no taste, better off drinking water. lol I guess it depends on what one's tastebuds are aquired to. I haven't tried whole milk, I wonder how that tastes. Probably yummy.
I agree I am such a fan of real food - never buy anything "diet" except for the odd diet coke because for some reason I like the taste better.
But I eat real cheese, yoghurt, milk, bread, chocolate, sweets, biscuits. I tend to go for natural food over processed and (aside from the diet coke, which I haven't had in at least a month anyway) never buy fat-free, sugar-free, artificially sweetened crap. It doesn't taste as good and I'd be missing out on the good fats in food.
Never waste an eating experience on food that doesn't taste great.
Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity. ~Voltaire
One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. ~Luciano Pavarotti
One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. ~Virginia Woolf.

You're dead right, goobyb!
My husband has high blood pressure and cholesterol, but he controls his cholesterol by diet and without the need for medication (he takes tablets for his blood pressure though). Show him a carton of so-called cholesterol-busting rubbishy spread full of chemicals and emulsifiers, and he'll show you the door! Show him a pack of natural butter and he'll welcome you with open arms!
Personally I'm lactore intolerant, so can't eat dairy stuff. Mind you, I have never liked the taste of cow's milk anyway, all my life. I have soya milk, soya yoghurts and can't have any soft cheeses. Hard cheeses and butter I can handle, but soft cheeses are a no-no.
I try my best to eat butter but my ED voice still tells me it's bad even though my common sense voice tells me it's good. If I do have butter, I have a really thin scraping, but before I wasn't having any atall, so I class a thin scraping to be at least a step in the right direction.
I used to swear by reduced fat hard cheese, but realised that I was having to eat more of the stuff than I would if I had the proper cheese. So I have switched to normal hard cheese and have to say it tastes and looks so much better than the reduced fat version.

Really? I wonder why... I don't see how it violates the CC guidelines or anything. Maybe a mod can clear this up?
