What is the diet for high triglycerides and type 2 diabetes?
Asked by nsnayak70 on May 13, 2009 in Health Conditions

I am 70 years old and I recently went in for a senior citizen check. My fasting blood sugar was 122 mg/dl against reference range of 70-110.  My triglycerides were 302 mg/dl against a 70-150 normal value.  My LDL cholesterol was low and weight and health are good.  Can you please suggest a daily diet to bring my triglycerides and sugar down to normal?

Answer

The same diet is used for high triglycerides and type 2 diabetes.  It is low in refined carbohydrate, saturated fat and alcohol, and high in dietary fiber. Rid your diet of excess sugar from sweetened beverages and sugary baked goods. Choose whole grains, lentils, beans and vegetables, over fruit.  Perhaps your weight would be better at 5 pounds less.  If you log your foods, look to your Nutrition Analysis for macronutrient distribution of 35% of calories from fat with 10% saturated and 55% of less of calories from carbohydrate, with no more than 20% from sugar.  Eating fatty fish or supplementing with 1000 mg of fish oil per day is also good for triglycerides.
