Is my diet making me cranky?
Asked by anonymous on Jan 20, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I have been so cranky since starting my diet! I have been snapping at everyone and then I feel awful.  Could I not be getting enough of something or what?

Answer

Hunger causes crankiness, and so try to lose weight slowly to be able to eat more food. You, personally, need about about 1700 calories a day to lose one pound a week.  Preliminary research shows that a low carbohydrate diet (50 grams a day or less) decreases the synthesis of serotonin, a chemical found in the brain that regulates mood.  Be sure to eat at least 100 grams of carbohydrate a day to maintain an even keel.  Shortages of many other nutrients can lead to "irritability", an excessive response to stimuli.  Irritability is one sign of deficiencies for B-vitamins, vitamins A and C, iron, magnesium, potassium, iron, selenium, and other nutrients.
