Although I am not a big soda drinker, but for some reason today I was craving a pepsi. So thought well ok, i can have a diet pepsi since it has 0 calories.
I have 2 questions:
1. Does that affect my diet even though it is 0 cals ?
2. Why do some people say it is so bad for weight loss ? .. I dont see why not!
can someone please calrify?
Thanks!
Hi Hebasita!
Well - even diet pepsi has calories - but only 1 per can - so it won't have a negative effect on your calorie intake.
I personally don't think having 1 diet soda per day or per week or every second day will actually be bad for you. We all know that pure water would be better, but then chocolate isnt good for you either and we still have it once in a while and we still are healthy and lose weight!
If you keep everything within decent boundaries you can enjoy diet pepsi and still be healthy and lose weight!
I had 2 cans coke zero and a big diet coke within the last 2 weeks and I don't think that was too bad. I think people who are solely drinking diet soda should think about cutting down but 1 a week... don't worry about it!

There were some articles about a theory that the artificial sweetners in diet sodas actually create the feeling of hunger. So about a year ago I decided to try giving up soda. I haven't had a drop since. Not sure if it had any real effect because I changed my whole lifestyle at the same time. Now I eat everything healthy and I'm 50lbs lighter. Never hungery. Maybe stopping the diet sodas helped? Search the forums on the diet soda theory.
Read for yourself and decide. I personally don't use artificial sweeteners. Gave up pop over 2 years ago.

I am quite the opposite of most that replied. I love my diet soda I love sodas in general. So when I changed from regular to diet or zero sodas a while ago.I have maybe 2 coke zero (12oz) a day! sometimes 3 if I have it with dinner. It hasn't hindered my weight lost at all. I lost 65 pounds since jan. with only 4 more to go for my goal. All on coke zero, crystal light and water
Several studies do, indeed, suggest that people who routinely drink diet soda often gain weight. But I am never sure if the people in the studies wouldn't have gained weight if they drank diet soda or not. Maybe artificial sweeteners do trigger some sweet craving. I really don't think it affects me that way.
I do know I spent a long time on the Net researching the "dangers" of consuming the artificial sweetener aspartame. Initially, most of the Net sites and articles I found very much looked at aspartame as being akin to a poison. But I also noticed the ©dates on most of the articles. Then I began to find more recent studies and articles that argued aspartame is not a poison and we can consume it safely. These later articles were by reputable sources, in my opinion.
I drink 3 or 4 litres of Diet Dr. Thunder a week, and will continue to do so.
I think that having one diet pepsi every so often isn't going to hinder anything.
I stopped drinking sodas regularly in high school but since I've been counting calories and trying to lose weight (I started June 21), there have been a few times where I've had a craving for something to drink that wasn't just water or crystal light.. so I've grabbed a diet pepsi. I don't think having a few will do any harm.. I've still lost 13.6 pounds since June 21 and have drank some diet pepsis in that time frame.
My personal opinion is that when possible try to stay away from food that doesn't have any nutritional value. Having said that though, I probably have the worst "sweet tooth" around. I've found that having a diet soda and sipping it keeps that craving in check throughout the day. I figure one can of diet soda is better then the chocolate bar, bag of chips, and what ever else I could find, that I would have consumed throughout the day without it.
As a diabetic, the only true option other than water is to use artifical sweetners. The question was posed to my physician and he said, there are no adverse effects of artifical sweetners. The theory has changed and new studies run. I have to agree with one of the posts. You need to look at the date of the study and find the most up to date. Perhaps go to the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICINE website and perform a search for the MOST UP TO DATE articles on the sweetners.
Take care and Good Luck with your diet journey. God Bless
I tried cutting out all soda (and cutting back on coffee) a few weeks ago.....now, when I do "need" a soda for the caffeine, it tastes nasty to me (I usually drink diet)
The only exception is sodas with natural sugar....I'll use those as treats a few times a month :)
I had heard the diet soda leads to weight gain study, part of the reason I cut them out
Personally I have diet coke which is also only 1 cal per can and its great because for me it works as a natural appetite suppressant.
The only warning I would ever give for either diet pepsi or coke is that they are a caffeine product and if you drink large volumes of them without eating much food they can cause stomach ulcers with long term consumption and they can damage the enamel on your teeth
Did anybody ever try the Diet Dr. Pepper Chocolate Cherry flavor (about 2 years ago)? It was sooo delicious! It was like eating a guilt-free cake. It tasted just like a cherry tootsie roll pop. Apparently it wasn't too popular because it didn't last very long, but I looooved it! I wish they would bring it back. It was a great "dessert" after a meal. Man. What a bummer.
delaney86: No, but I wish I could have tried it!
Drink you soda. Who gives. It's DIET PEPSI for crying out loud. I drink over 4 cans of soda a day during maintenance and i'm not "fat". I've also lost 175 pounds.. yes 175 pounds, drinking soda every day.
So if you're worried about the fat aspect, then brush those worries aside. Now if you're worried about cancer.. that's another subject. But we're all going to get cancer anyway. Cell phones, the sun, soda. *shrugs* I'm over it. Are you over it? :)
I feel like I lost more weight and feel better since I cut out the diet soda/crystal light from my diet. First off, because I would drink four cans a day, and all of that caffeine couldn't be a good thing. And second off, because once my alternatives were gone, I started to actually drink water. I'd go to fruits for my sweetness and hydration more often, rather than just grabbing a diet pop. Plus I think I was addicted to carbonation.
Carbonated soft drinks distend the stomach and weaken the esophageal valve, the one that keeps the food down, so in time it's possible to get some nasty reflux problems. One can every now and then is fine, just don't make it a habit.
I drink 1-3 diet sodas a day, and have been losing between 6-10 pounds a month for the past 3 months. The 2nd month, I decided to test whether the diet soda was slowing my weight loss, but, it didn't have any noticeable effect. In fact, for me, the diet soda is a blessing, because when I'm hitting that late afternoon hunger wall, it picks me up and satisfies my cravings.
I don't think the artificial sweeteners effect my appetite, and I think they help me feel satisfied and allow me to resist sugar and treats. I'm a big sweets eater, and without the diet soda and fruit, I couldn't maintain weight loss goals.
I'm over half way to my goal, and I think I owe my success to allowing myself to indulge in diet sodas to avoid more sugary substitutes.
We are all unique individuals, however. What works for me may not work for someone else, and for another dieter, a soda may trigger appetite. So, I'm not advocating driinking soda for everyone, but, sharing how it has not harmed me one bit.
