Hello! Recently, I've turned into one of those very health-freaks, haha, who only eats whole wheat and fruits and carrot sticks and almonds for lunch and non-fried food... but somehow I am gaining, not losing weight. :(

I'm planning on exercising more.

but I was also wondering, do diet pills work? I mean, I know some people say they are bad for you and will only make you gain weight as quickly as you lose it.. but I'm thinking it only applies to people who only depend on the pills, and as I've said, I'm going to be exercising more as well and I already eat very healthily...

Could I please have your opinion if it is a good idea to try some diet pills? Thankyou very much!

I don't think diet pills are a good idea.  They don't work and I personally don't think they are healthy.  Did you run your stats through the burn meter?  That's the best way to determine how much you should be eating based on your own weight and activity level.  If you follow the advice on this site you'll lose weight. The common saying around here is, "If diet pills worked, we'd all be skinny."  I suggest that you keep track of your calories eaten and burned.  You might be taking in more than you think.  That's the best way to have a successful weight loss program.  I know because I've been trying for a lot of years and this is the only think that's worked to give me consistent, healthy, and sustainable weight loss.  Good luck to you!

I used to be one of those people who fell into NUMEROUS diet pill fads. I thought they were a god send and would fix my jiggly belly! They didnt. I came to terms that they are nothing more than a money pit! Slicing your calorie intake and upping your movement will prove to be the best solution!

They're good at making your wallet lighter, but that's about it.

I think that you should first commit to exercising more; saying you're going to is different from saying "I am exercising more now".

Are you journaling?  Are you eating too little? Is your body fighting back and you trying to hard too quickly?

My best advise is:

Count your calories...all of them.

Don't go over a 500 calorie deficit (burning more than you're taking in)

exercise, exercise exercise.  This is great for mind and body.  Also, when you exercise, you eat more and don't have to be as strick to yourself.

I think that our world is obsessessed with weight loss gimicks and we always hope for a quick fix, but it's not natural. Just think, you're really feeling like you're being healthy now, pills will be so unnatural.

I tried Alli a few days and it was gross (anal leakage)....does that sound natural???LOL!

Good luck and hit the pavement with walking more, running, join a gym...it really has helped me

Also, a lot of people say they used diet pills and they worked, but if you question more closely you'll find that these people were also restricting calories and doing exercise. I think in these cases its safe to assume that the exercise and diet was doing the work!

The only diet pills that ever worked contained ephedra which is now an illegal substance because it makes your blood pressure skyrocket.  I used to take Xenadrine a long time ago and my BP went from 110/70 to 167/86 in 6 months.

Sorry; I'm not understanding what part of diet pills are supposed to relate to becoming a health freak.  Two thumbs down on that one from me.

I also admit I fell into the trap of believing if they claim it....and I buy it...it will work...they dont....the reality is its wasted money....the way to lose weight is to exercise and eat right...if you are gaining then you need to look at the daily caloric input versus the burn....

Go for vitamins instead of diet pills. GNC has a good womens multi with energy, and I find that when I take it I lose SLIGHTLY more weight. Like maybe 2 extra lbs per month. But then, maybe the extra energy boost is just helping me to be more active and burn more calories. Either way, vitamins are healthy, diet pills are not.

Also, most diet pills are supposed to speed up your metabolism, right? So when you get off of them your metabolism will slow back down and you'll end up gaining. Also without the appetite suppressant they provide, you'll be starving all the time, and gain more by eating. So even if you can lose with them, you'll end up gaining it back, and usually packing on extra pounds on top.

Diet pills are garbage. Wishfull thinking. Urban myth. Completely useless when it comes to weight loss.

If you aren't losing any weight by healthy eating & exercising than see a doctor to check for health conditions that could be hindering your weight loss efforts.

Or you aren't being totally honest with your 'healthy living' choices. Are you counting all your calories? Logging all your foods and paying close attention to portions and cooking preperation? Are you following your exercise plan dillegently or just pretending you are? How long have you been following this plan? Weight loss takes TIME. Much longer than anyone wishes. Everyone would love to wake up tomorrow and have instantly lost the XX number of pounds on their wish list.

I'd also like to buy a pill that makes me wake up tomorrow 3 inches taller... Anyone?

Keep in mind you can be eating too much and still be eating 'healthy' foods. Also keep in mind that if you eat too LITTLE your body will 'hold on' and try to fight starvation.

Also consider changing your exercise routine to 'wake up' your metabolism. Make it more intense - try new exercises - add new activities to your program.

That response is spot on.  I expect huge results this week from adding incline to the treadmill for my cardio.   Has anyone done this?  What amount would you recommend for the first time?

I once was told diet pills only work as hard as you do.... in that case, why not just do it yourself! They are a waste of money.

+1 Indeed!

But I have to say that yes, diet pills DO indeed works. HOWEVER... SOME work, lots and lots are pure garbage, and those that work, work under SPECIFIC conditions, depending on the kind of mechanism they use, your body type etc...

If you do everything right, THEN you can add a diet pills... it's kinda like a catalyst. It'll boost what your are already doing...  that means that if you do nothing, it's net effect will be 0.

quick example: your adjusted BMR is 2200. If you train and diet and come a 1900, your body will "spend" 300.. hence losing 300 cals. Then enters a diet pills, let's use a thermogenic like Biotest's Farenheit, which makes your BMR go up to 2500. then you "burn" 500 cals. I'm not sure I'm too clear lol....  let's just say that : you can lose weight by consumming less calories, or spending more. the diet pills can act on both.

they work, but only when everything else is done right, which is what 99% of the people don't do.  ; )

my two cent

Whenever I think of diet pills, I think of Requiem for a Dream.

You don't want to be taking ANY kind of pill for weight loss after seeing that movie.  Poor Sara, if only she'd known!

Thanks everyone! I'm kind of new to dieting and the whole calorie counting idea, I only thought that diet pills would help boost my enthusiasm, and make me work harder... but... anal leakage.. hahahhaa, it doesn't really make me too enthusiastic anymore! Maybe it'll be last-resort or something if this relaly doesn't work out! thanks again :)

I don't think they're great really, but..some of them will curb your appetite which can help if you're someone who overeats on a regular basis. They have new products that basically expand and fill your stomach so you eat less..which are not exactly diet pills, but more like big time fiber or something.

Someone help me here..what's the name of those bars..that are supposed to be like lap band minus the surgery?

My point being some products will reduce your appetite. They can have side effects of course..they can make your heart race, cause you to feel irritable or not be able to sleep, etc.

I'm sure they effect people differently, and you might find them helpful, but you should research the ingredients as much as possible first to be sure they're not made of anything too crazy.

I have used Hoodia in the past, but didn't stay with them long because they made me feel awfully irritable and jittery. Too, I wasn't someone who over-ate to a point where I really needed an appetite suppresant.

There is no harm in looking into things, just be sure to do your research, and of course to make sure you eat enough, and are actively learning about portion control and nutrition info so that you can manage your diet without *needing* pills in order to stay on track.

You think that's bad? I tried taking pills to speed up my anal leakage (you can never have enough) and I lost 50lbs, it was gross.

*may be lying*

Don't put that garbage in your body.
