Diet Pills

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, first things first, please don't kill me and eat me for dinner.

However I have to say that I've been very curious about diet pills. I have been dieting a while and loosing very little weight. And I know I should be. I'm 5 foot 7, 175 lbs, and 19 years old. I work at a horse breeding farm where I am always on my feet, moving, and working. Overthe summer (three months) I have lost about 5 lbs. I have gained muscle since starting my job but I still believe I should have lost more weight than that.

So I have become curious about dieting pills. I know a lot of people are against them-but why exactly? To me it seems reasonable that some herbs/supplements help promote loosing weight. I would not count this pill as my diet-but continue eating healthy and excerising. If some are alright to use but not others, does anyone know a diet pill that is not harmful to you? I am also a college student so please keep in mind I do not have a lot of money.

"please don't kill me and eat me for dinner."

....depends on how many calories you are (and whether or not you'll taste like pizza).

I personally don't count green tea supplements as diet pills. I actually get the Mega-T Green tea breath mints and I love them! They're surgar free and I've noticed that I've had a bit more energy since I've been using them (not to mention fresher breath). Definitely avoid things with ephedra - which I'm not sure is even on the market anymore - and other gimmicky type diet pills like dexatrim. Green tea does boost energy but not THAT much. I just take it for other health reasons more so than weight loss. Have you noticed changes in your body other than the numbers on the scale? Maybe get a tape measure and see if your measurements change. Perhaps you aren't giving the weight of your muscles enough credit? A bit of muscle the size of a deck of cards weighs the same as six grapefruits of fat (size-wise). I was really amazed to hear that but it's true. Muscle doesn't just wiegh more than fat...it weighs a HELL of a lot more than fat!

Ephedra is back on the market. I use it every now and then but that is only because it helps with my asthma. However, what really hurts ppl when they use ephedra is when they take 2-5 times the daily dose of it. THAT is what kills people.

Anyway, what I would do is some research before taking any diet pills. Don't do this by going to the pill's website. Search other sites and so on. Not every pill will work for everybody since everyone is different.

Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat, although muscle takes up less space than fat.

As far as diet pills, a lot of them are a scam, some are dangerous to your health, and most people can lose weight without them. If the pills were so effective, no one would be fat.

I think I was happier thinking muscle weighed more then fat :p

I did look up that myth and it appears you are right dm84...there is more too it but I can't say I exactly understood it. I'm sure I can loose weight without them...but at this rate, ill loose 15 lbs a year.

I lost 70 lbs in a year without pills.

It's all about caloric deficit, but as a 6'1" male, I was able to create a rather large deficit by eating the minimum a man can eat while exercising. At the same time, I cannibalized my muscle by doing that, and am working to rebuild it.  Women generally don't have the ability to create huge deficits like that.

The pills won't actually cause you to lose weight, eating fewer calories will. If 15 lbs a year is all you can manage safely, then that's what you should strive for. Losing too much too quickly can be pretty dangerous.

Are you saying that if you took 2 square inches of muscle and 2 square inches of fat, that they would weigh the same?

Sorry dm84...not buying it.

Edited: to continue...

Sure, 1 pound of fat weighs the same as 1 pounds of muscle...duh. They both weigh a pound. BUT, when it comes to SIZE they are not the same. Muscle is denser and thus takes up less space.

Saying muscle doesn't weigh more than fat but then going on to say it takes up less space doesn't make sense. The whole example was based off of size to begin with. When the two things are equal size, muscle weighs more.
hmm ok...

diet pills: there is no greater satisfaction and pride knowing you did it all on your own with DIET & Excercize. With the exception of the obvious multi-vitamin and such as mentioned above. I recomend that you do your research and read all reviews until you are so positive nothing can hold you back. Rapid weightloss is not permanent weight loss, it's unhealthy & harmful to your body. You should be losing 1.7lbs a week if you're doing everything right.

muscle: I don't care how much it weighs. I personally just care about the way i look and feel. I personally think it's all mental & how you look at things.

=]

1 lb of muscle weighs the same as 1 lb of fat. A pound is a pound, regardless of what the material is.

As I said the first time, muscle has a higher density than fat, so 1 lb of muscle is smaller than 1 lb of fat.

That's a direct quote from you, but muscle does weigh more than fat. Of course 1lb of anything is the same as 1lb of anythign else, but when you are comparing the weight of two things the assumption is made that you're comparing two things of the same size. (Especially when talking about some type of materials)
I embrace them.  Since most people dont really do research at all and (ahem un-edu-ma-cated) LOL.

Some people think its cheating.  What a load of dog doo.  We manipulate our calories, food intake (vitimans and minerals) and this comes up? lol  I guess no one drinsk coffee or tea.  Caffeine is all over the place so is egcg.   Its just funny how people draw their lines.

I personaly encourage it (with education of course.  its funny where bio class comes into play here after a few years of thinking its crap).
To dm84:  thats a retarded comment.  Anything is dangerous to you in mass quantity.  You dont think 100% pure oxgyen is toxicating? lol  Too much of anything is bad.  Most people can lose weight without them...not as fast, not as effective, no help, and not much help on retaining lean body mass (as you said yourself, being in a deficit canabalize your own muscles thats why you lost alot, bad way of doing it.  Now it will take a few years to rebuild depending on how much you lost in muscle mass).  WIth the right suppliments, things could be different.

On Ephedra:  (if your not using the ECA/ystack then yea, read the lable)  Its the over all amount and your personal reaction to it.  Its been on the market for before and after the ban in HCL form [btw, the ban was lifted since FDA had inconclusive evidence or whatnot].  Dose should be in gradual increments and not taken all at once.  People die because they dont know what their doing... that include ODing on other things besides this.

Muslce Vs fat weight.  LOL comon...who cares.  Its just a number.  Muslcle for one can expand (the pump!!) to a greater degree.

Its volume your thinking of to use to find what weights more.

Right. When I was a boy scout, my scoutmaster died from taking fen-fen.

Silver, to address your question about weight loss pills... I think a lot are against them because a lot have tried them with no results.  I have tried a lot of them because I was curious and if you feel curious I say try a few but don't get your hopes up.  Me personally, if it sounds good and it's backed up with lots of (sponsoring) sources, I would probably try it.  Take note of sponsors though, they will say anything works.  If anything just to get rid of the curiousity give it a try, but be very careful to follow the directions carefully and don't overdo it.

I also do want to add that I am done with weight loss pills though, I've tried them, satisfied my curiousity, and I'm not wasting anymore money on them.

i would suggest giving Hoodia a try first you can buy it at health food stores, it's in expensive and it can work wonders

You could try Alli, the new weight loss drug, which is the only FDA approved diet pill. I haven't tried it, but it is supposed to make you lose more while on a diet and exercise program.

It has side effects though, like if you don't follow a low-fat diet you can have some stomach problems, diarrea and some others.

If there was a magic pill Oprah would've had it on her Favorite things list decades ago and as agape 1897 said: "there is no greater satisfaction and pride knowing you did it all on your own with diet & excercise" and plus everyone is gonna be total jealous of you because you did it all on your own. Sure at first you'll get comments on how little you're eating compared to your friends and family but it's all worth it in the end because same people that make comments are the same ones that will be coming to you for helpWink

Thanks for the help everyone. I've come to the conclusion that while a diet pill can help, there is no miracle pill. Which I understand and agree with.

I may or may not get around to trying them. However it would only be compiled with dieting and exercising. Honestly I do not think I would feel any more pride doing it on my own or with help. Because you could then say I shouldn't use a gym because I wouldn't feel as much pride in myself. I consider both of these things a tool to help a person get to a healthier weight. Any one thing alone will not make a significant difference-it is a lifestyle change.

Thank you to those who suggested a brand-I'll have to check it out sometime. And while Oprah may have used a pill long ago I find a lot of people merely do not care enough to act. After all, Oprah could easily afford liposuction if she really wanted to approve her appearance that much.

im really sorry if i repeat anything thats already been said but i didnt take the time to read the responses. here's my experience with diet pills:

i lost 30 lbs without them. i cut cals a little bit, but the thing is i ate much much healthier. i also joined a gym. like you i also had a fairly active job, which helps, but doing 45-60 mins of cardio 4 times a week at the gym helped too. then i wanted to lose more, so when i saw on celeb fit club that dustin diamond saif he lost 16 lbs by using zantrex 3 i went out and got it. it knocked 10 lbs right off, about 3 weeks. i took the max amount, 2 pills before breakfast and 2 before lunch, unless i knew dinner would be big, then i took them before dinner. it worked, it was awesome, blah blah. i even researched them online, read reviews of people who had used it. hardly any reviews were bad, but all those people were still in their first month and had the same results as me.

then i gained all 10 pounds back, and i never even stopped taking them. i dont know what happened. i still didnt change my diet or exercise. i talked to some body builders at the gym i go to and they said sometimes with fat burners your body just gets used to them and stops responding. i havent gained anymore weight back so im just gonna stop taking them.

the one thing i want to say is that you need to see that on every single diet pill, it says it only works with a new diet and exercise program. you cant just keep pigging out and not exercising. THATS when diet pills dont do what they claim. im going to sound like a broken record, but diet and exercise, diet and exercise, diet and exercise. everyone says it, and maybe us fatties dont listen because it sounds so simple yet its so painfully sacrificial! but after changing my diet and exercising, i lost 30 lbs. cut cals, workout 3-4 times a week. the end.
