diet pills.. TELL ME NO!!

Quote  |  Reply

hello everyone,

i am new here and starting off today with a new diet/exercise program!

i am very excited to start out and am very motivated.. my only problem is this.. in the past, i have turned to diet pills every single time i wanna lose weight. i have never once tried to lose weight without them!! i really and truly do NOT want to do that this time as deep down i know that they really don't do much for me, and also that it is risky for me to use them. i am having a hard time not buying any...  part of me wants to go out and get some on my lunch hour today. but i am sure there are many of you that lose weight and get fit and dont need diet pills, so then why do i?? it's like i am so scared i will fail without them, like they are a crutch that i need or something.

TALK SOME SENSE INTO ME PLEASE! i need it right now...

thanks! xoxoxoxo

Here's the thing: there's nothing a diet pill does for you that you don't have to do yourself.

The diet pill doesn't let you eat a slice of cake every hour on the hour or get off not working out in the morning. At best, it helps you not eat as much. This isn't magic. This is pretty straighforward. It's not really all that helpful.

So, to repeat, you're still doing all the work. It's not even so useful as a crutch. It's about as effective as having a cheering squad. So you can do it! So do it!

Save the money you'd spend on pills and buy a heart rate monitor.   This will benefit you much more in calculating calories burned than the possibility you may burn a few extra calories a day from a pill (or probably not).

As was said, all the work for losing weight is in your hands... you have to get out and exercise and count those calories.   Even the pill bottles say that they only work with proper diet and exercise... which is really all you need to begin with.

Read this... gross and funny!  http://www.thewvsr.com/alli.htm

I used to take diet pills too. I just love them for energy...etc. BUT when I joined CC I found out the hard way that I didn't lose anymore any faster than anyone else my size same weight goal. They are supposed to curve hunger, well if you are anything like me... I DON'T eat because I'm hungry, I eat because I'm bored and I have yet to find a diet pill that can stop that. Lol. I think we all go through life looking for a quick fix, when realistically there is no quick fix.

I hope you make the best decision possible but I will give ya a lil insight- it is proven that those who lose the weight on diet pills always gain it back once they stop. Whereas just losing the weight the natural way, (cc), you are twice as likely to keep it off because you'll learn new eating habits and calorie counts along the way.

I reached my goal back in Sept and now thanks to the holidays I'm up 4.  I know it doesn't sound like much but when you only have 5-10 to lose it's big. Lol. I'm completely depressed about it and have a family event to attend this wknd. I look swollen and bloated. Lol. Trust me diet pills are looking really good to me right now. Lol.

Sorry, I know this is about you- not me.  I'm just venting my frustration towards myself. lol.

Good luck with your weight loss. Back to cc for me for atleast the next month, maybe two.

Read the post in this forum about all the "tainted" diet pills that are currently being recalled by the FDA. Definitely made me not want to try them out.

I sometimes take Reductil (sibutramine) when starting back at a diet.  I never really took them on a regular basis because I get an anxious/angry side effect if I take them regularly.

When I want to jump start a diet, I take them once every 2-3 days or on days where there would be a party or some type of food event.  They do help me curb overeating in those situations.  They have helped me in the past the first couple weeks of a diet because they give the sense of not being hungry.

It is up to you.  I don't like to take diet pills day to day.  I know that I get mood swings and in the end it is not worth it.

I have lost about 80 pounds and I want to loose another 35. Personally I am starting off my current phase (eating healthier and getting back to the gym) with the pill.  I went awol from my eating plans when a friend of my got pregnant.. I started eating along side her and gained 12 pounds (about right for 7 months??).   I swear her hormones are passing to me!!! Anyhow I am using the Reductil to help me start off and say no to my best friend's cookie cravings.

If the diet pills you'd taken in the past worked you wouldn't be here now....

They don't aid weight loss, you still have to work hard on them. At best, they'll curb hunger but it has to be you who controls when you eat as you'll know when you're hungry. They're a waste of money that could be spent buying yourself something when you reach your goal on your own!

Also, what gi-jane said makes perfect sense.

Maybe instead of focusing on the diet pill itself, think of all the money you are going to save by NOT taking the darn things that do you no good to begin with.

How much are a bottle of those pills. 50 bucks? Like.. twice a month? Thats about 100 dollars you can spend on something else! Treat yourself to the spa once a month, get your hair done, get your nails done. Do anything to make YOU feel good.

Dieting pills gross if you ask me. I've taken them a few times, and only found myself full of hot flashes, dizzy, and sick to my stomach. There's no OTC pill that has proven to aid itself in weight loss. It's all the junk in it. It's a drug like anything else.

Hang in there. This can be done without pills. Trust me, I know, I've lost 175 pounds without pills, without surgery. It's all mind over matter, math, and portion sizes.

PS: Do you know anyone who's ever gotten fat from being "hungry"??? Like, physically hungry. I don't know a single soul.

I personally take a so called "diet pill" simply to curb my appetite. According to the CC quiz,  I am an Excessive Eater. I just cannot do portion control. So if I can curb my appetite so that I can eat healthier, smaller portions and less calories than I am ok with that. I don't get any crazy, shaky, dizzy, nauseous side effects from Atrophex, otherwise I would stop taking it. I am not looking to starve myself, just to stay within a decent range of 1200-1400 cals/day vs 1700-1900 if left to my own devices. I am exercising and working hard, but if I cannot maintain a low calorie, balanced diet b/c I am constantly going over my calorie limit, then it is pointless. I am not recommending that people take "diet pills" nor do I judge anyone for taking them. We all know there are def some pills out there that will do more harm than good, and nobody wants to damage their body just to look good. Each person knows what they feel comfortable with and what works for them. I am happy with my results so far and I hope everyone gets the results they are looking for, with or without the extra help.

Good luck!!!

Chances are it's just a placebo effect. Most OTC diet pills are diuretics, laxatives, or caffeine pills. The first two do nothing for fat loss and can be harmful in the long-term. Caffeine may have a minor metabolism-raising effect and if your heart is healthy a little caffeine won't hurt you, but you'd be better off with a mug of coffee or tea anyway, because then you're getting some water with it. It won't make or break your diet - the effect is small.
